The next door down (Marin City) was 99% black and we shared a school district and sports leagues, so it always felt fully integrated as a kid. Didn't occur to me until college that sharing schools and sports didn't exactly mean integration.

One year, a black family moved in down the street. Prior to that, the only black people in my neighborhood was one of the Pointer Sisters :ghetto: . So this new, non-celebrity family moves in and the dad drives an Excalibur, the car Matt Houston drove. The kid is my age, so we start hanging out- good kid. But the entire neighborhood- and keep in mind, this is Marin County in the early 80s... very liberal and supposedly "progressive"/open- is whispering amongst themselves that the dad is a drug dealer AND a pimp. Nice work, white people. Turns out, he was a drug dealer and a pimp. Also turns out my friend was dealing for him. They both went to prison. And the white people rejoiced.
Isn't that where Tupac's from?

That's hysterical. The scuttlebutt at Mollie Stone's must have been something.

Not from there, but did go to HS there. Marin City is Marin County's dirty little secret. It's essentially a Best Buy and public housing.

Yeah- Sausalito and Marin City fed into the Mill Valley HS (Tam High) and those kids from Mill Valley were absolutely horrified by black people. First time I ever heard the N word from a cracker. But back then, there was no shopping mall. It was just public housing and a flea-market. And Hayden's Market- lots of drugs to be had/sold at Hayden's Market. Sad really... I ran into one of my friends from there in my mid-20s and I got to asking him about everybody. One after another, he had the same answer: jail.

Chicago looks like most segregated big city in America. The map looks like one face of a Rubik's Cube. It's like blocks of one color, then it stops abruptly and changes to a block of another color. I spent some time there and didn't see that at all, but I guess the numbers don't lie.
If you think Chicago is bad, look at 8 mile road in Detroit.

88% White

5% black

4% Hispanic

2% Asian

Actually more diverse than I thought it would be since my area is considered to be a "white flight" area....although I think of it as more of a "get the heck out of that county with the failing school districts" area.

I think if you gave me a map of the metroplex and a box of crayons this map came back exactly like I would have drawn it.

Not sure what that means exactly, but this looks real legit. And very well done.

I'm sure there are more concentrated areas, but I live in the Chicago area, so that's what I checked.

Tract 3307 in New Orleans may be the gayest place in the country. Which honestly surprises me. I would've guessed somewhere in San Fran.

People of German Ancestry Dominate US Melting PotAmerica is a melting pot of immigrants from across the globe and people of German ancestry make up the biggest chunk of that mix.

There are more than 49 million people with German ancestry in the United States, a number that accounts for 16 percent of the American population.

“This includes people reporting multiple ancestries,” said David Garoogian, senior editor of Ancestry and Ethnicity in America, in an email. “Only 16,912,041 people reported being of German ancestry alone.”

There more than 41 million Americans who identify as Black or African American.

The US Census map identifies “Black” or “African-American” as a term for US citizens with ancestry in Sub-Saharan Africa. African Americans live predominantly in the South, but there are also large Black or African-American communities in Chicago, Illinois and Detroit, Michigan.

The 35 million people who identify as “Irish” form the next-largest ethnic group, followed by the 31 million people who identify as “Mexican”.

There’s an old adage that says “Birds of a feather flock together” and that’s certainly the case with ethnic groups in the United States.

“For the most part, people of certain ancestries tend to congregate in certain parts of the country,” said Garoogian.

German-Americans have settled primarily in the Midwest where they account for more than 30 percent of the population. You’ll find a heavy concentration of Irish-Americans in the U.S. Northeast, in states like Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine and Massachusetts.

People with Mexican ancestry are found along the Southwestern border of the United States and are heavily concentrated in Los Angeles, Houston, Phoenix, San Diego, Dallas, and San Antonio.

There are more than 19 million people who identify themselves only as “American”.

The U.S. Census Bureau says the reason for this could be because their ancestors have been in the United States for so long, or they have such mixed backgrounds, that they do not identify with any particular group.

Some foreign-born children or those with foreign-born parents might identify solely as “American” to show that they are part of American society.

Ancestry and Ethnicity in America used data from the 2010 Census and the 2006-2010 American Community Survey to reach its conclusions.

Hispanics are America’s second largest race or ethnic group, behind non-Hispanic whites, representing about 17 percent of the total population.

The Hispanic population grew by 2.2 percent, or more than 1.1 million, to just over 53 million in 2012. The growth in the Hispanic population was fueled primarily by births.

Asians are the nation’s fastest-growing race or ethnic group, according to the U.S. Census. Asians are identified as people coming from the Far East, Southeast Asia or the Indian subcontinent.

The Asian population rose by 530,000, or 2.9 percent, in 2011, to 18.9 million, according to US Census Bureau annual population estimates. More than 60 percent of this growth in the Asian population came from immigration.

The primary market for books like Ancestry and Ethnicity in America is public and university libraries, according to Laura Mars, editorial director at Grey House Publishing, which compiled the two-volume series, but businesses also use the data to market products.

“People who have a grocery store in Topeka, Kansas, are interested in ‘Well, should I stock Asian foods?’,” said Mars. “Educators might be interested in seeing what their demographic is and how to skew curriculum. I think it has a wide and varied use.”

I'd totally forgotten about this. Thanks to whoever bumped this.

Crazy how fast things can change in urban areas. Apparently my census tract was 84% black from 2005-2009. I'd be surprised if it's even 50% now.

What means 'Other'?
I sometimes put "Other."

I'm half-White, half-Asian (Thai). If there isn't an option for that, I'll sometimes put White, sometimes put Asian, sometimes, I put Other...just depends on my mood.
I'm part Spanish. It cracks me up how sometimes ethnic breakdowns will include "Spanish" under Latino or Hispanic and sometimes not. Like the concept of "race" is fluid and the rules change depending on whom you're talking to and who's asking and when and whatever the purpose is at the moment.

Oh, wait...

There are definitely parts of New Orleans where exactly this has happened. Partly due to Katrina, partly due to gentrification, lots of reasons.

 I'm not just white. I'm not just Asian. But I am White, and I am Asian...This categorization problem is the risk you run trying to categorize everyone on earth under 5 or 6 multiple-choice answers.
