Mario Manningham - Terrible Sirius Radio interview (1 Viewer)

Raider Nation

Devil's Advocate

He could be the single dumbest person I've ever heard. No hyperbole. If you don't think Michigan relaxes its academic standards for star athletes, just listen to this guy speak for a few minutes. He was just on the Sirius Blitz at about noon EST.

Between completely butchering the English language, acting aloof, and sounding incredibly immature, I find it hard to believe a team will invest a high pick on this kid. There is no possible way he could have impressed teams during interview sessions. Not to mention the well-publicized issue regarding how he initially lied to teams about using drugs in the past.

He agreed to a "no question is off limits" interview with Adam Schein and Tim Hasselbeck. He dodged just about every question, sounded a lot like Snoop Dog (only less intelligent), and when asked which teams he had visited already, his insightful reply was "Uhhhhhhhhhhh........."

I realize football players don't need to be brain surgeons to succeed in the NFL, but I got a horrible vibe from this kid.

If the Raiders draft him, I swear I will

I realized he was tool by the way he acted in one of Mallet first games. He's got a freshman QB and he's acting like Chad Johnson instead of trying to help the kid out. He's a punk. When you drop balls that hit your hands.. you can't ##### when the QB misses you a few times.

He definitely has some bust potential. Even ignoring the character issues, I'm not sure he really has the goods on the field.

I think Arrington offers better value in terms of risk/reward in the real life and in FF.

Someone will always take an idiot like this. Think Baltimore, maybe Tennessee. Washington already has 10 smurf WR's so they will pass this year.

He was absolutely brutal. I don't know how much this type of interview can change his draft position on anyones board, but I know that if I was a GM this guy would have dropped significantly on mine.

Caddilac Williams sounded like a moron when they interviewed him as well after he was drafted. He said, "uhh Ronnie won the war, uhhh but I will win the battle."

The Colts have been scouting this kid. 'Nuff said. I don't think they're looking for English majors.
They also won't be drafting him. They did however, by bringing him in, make some loser organization think ....'why would they bring him in if they aren't interested'? 'Let's take him early'. That's why.

:lmao: So glad I'm not the only one who heard it. Talk about an uncomfortable interview.

I could actually feel Adam and Tim looking at each other thinking "Is he REALLY this dumb?"

Peyton, talking to Mario in the huddle: "See that goal post? Run towards it."
I dont think anyone can really appreciate how bad he sounded (not just his vocabulary), it was his attitude. Every interview one of these kids takes part in must be viewed as a job interview and there is no way anyone would want to hire a kid with this attitude.

He mentioned the interview with the Colts. Maybe Dungy can get this kid's head screwed on right but I would be awfully nervous if he was chosen in the first couple of rounds by my team.

What I heard was absolutely BRUTAL! Adam and Tim have been talking about it all afternoon. If he sounded that way during interviews at the combine, he is nearly undraftable.

Do players get paid to speak publicly or play football? I just love how fat archair QB's everywhere now have forums to criticize everybody behind their keyboards. Ladainian Tomlinson was a bad interview when he was coming out of college, Randy Moss still sounds like a country bumpkin, and Emmitt Smith...well, no need to go there. Playing football is the bottom line.

I didn't hear the interview but I think, if it's as bad as you're making it out to be, it's a concern. I'm sorry if this comes off sounding callous, but if you're incapable of speaking intelligently (I'm not talking an Abraham Lincoln-esque orator, just someone that has SOME semblance of grammar and diction), I worry that you're ill equipped to handle the many challenges and temptations that come with being a privileged celebrity in a sycophantic world.

Allen Iverson?I don't know if that comparison is for or against your point though :goodposting:

That was the most cocky and unintelligent interview I have ever heard.I am paraphrasing this but they asked him about the big passes he dropped in college and his response was...and again paraphrasing but...well, what about the passes I caught?this guy is unbelievable.

Not to mention you'd have to worry about his ability to understand the playbook.

I had to change the station...it was embarrassing. Checked back in shortly after, and Adam and Tim were just in shock.

he just lost a ton of money.

This guy has been totally removed from my own rookie fantasy draft board since the lying about pot but testing positive incident. But if he wasn't he sure would be now. The WR bust ratio is very high already, and a guy who comes into the league with substance and attitude issues already just makes the risk untenable.

I remember David Terrell (8th? pick overall in his draft class), early in his first preseason with the Bears, being interviewed. When asked about how he's progressing at learning the offense and the going up against NFL players, said in effect that it ain't no thaaaang, that he's already got it all figured out, and he just wants the preseason over with so he can start dominating for real. Yeah, right. We all know how that turned out.

My question is this:

Surely the guy has an agent. How did anyone with any sort of intelligence with some vested interest in him allow him to go on the air and do an interview knowing this was likely to happen? I can't imagine how his agent would knowingly allow him to do this.

Despite what drew rosenhaus would have you believe the player is the one who ultimately calls the shots, not the agent. I'm sure whoever manningham's agent is knew an interview wasn't a good idea but all he can do is advise him on what to do or not to do but it's mario who makes the final decision. Also it's possible that the agent is just a yes man who would rather manningham look like an idiot than risk pissing him off and losing him as a client

He mentioned in the interview he has ALREADY changed agents. Wouldn't be surprised if the agent dumped HIM.

AGENT: "Son, you must know this already. You're a moron and a punk. But let's keep that on the down low for another two weeks, OK? As Mark Twain once said: 'It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.'"MARIO:  "Mark... uh... who? Who does he play for?"

http://espn.go.com/melkiper/s/2001/0227/1113401.html
This turned out to be the L.T. show. LaDainian Tomlinson of TCU definitely elevated his draft position, maybe to the point where he becomes the first running back off the board. Tomlinson ran faster than people thought, clocking an impressive 4.38, and also caught the ball extremely well. The NFL brass I spoke with also raved about his showing during the interview sessions.

He didn't get the Vizio gig for nothing....

You have misunderstood my original statement. Tomlinson came off as a humble, respectful player coming out of college and impressed people with his character, but he was a bad interview because he often used improper grammar much like Emmitt Smith still does. Tomlinson has vastly improved his speech skills since being a rookie.

LT's not the brightest but he's got a good personality and is a solid character guy. Even as a Chargers fan I sometimes cringe during his interviews.

LT is not the brightest crayon in the box...that being said, this will definitely knock Manningham out of my Top 10 rook WRs.

This guy has been totally removed from my own rookie fantasy draft board
I'm sorry, but do you realize how silly that sounds? :shrug:Let's all keep perspective here.
It's not silly at all. There are plenty of players to fill a rookie draft list without taking on this guy. There's just no point listing him way below where I know he will be drafted by another owner. Someone else will take him before I would ever consider him, so taking him off my list isn't such a big deal.

HOLE GETS DEEPER FOR MANNINGHAM Posted by Mike Florio on April 14, 2008, 9:35 p.m. With a potential draft-day slide being greased by so-so pre-draft workouts and the inexplicable decision to lie at the Scouting Combine about whether he failed one or more drug tests while at Michigan, receiver Mario Manningham did further damage to his draft stock via a train-wreck Monday afternoon appearance on Sirius NFL Radio. Manningham was interviewed by Adam Schein and Tim Hasselback on the Afternoon Blitz. To put it mildly, it did not go well. A trusted media source who heard the interview explained it to us as follows: "He made a fool of himself. He hung himself. He took no responsibility to what happened in college or his error in judgment at the Combine. He was arrogant and defensive. When asked about the balls he dropped in big spots, he responded, 'What about the ball I caught?' . . . . He couldn't even handle question about his agent change or why he left college early. . . . Total knucklehead." Last week, Manningham sent a letter to all 32 teams seeking forgiveness for his failure to tell the truth at the Combine. Perhaps he'll now pen a follow-up letter apologizing for his appearance on Sirius NFL Radio.

I missed it,thank god. Maybe he was high?

The last time I heard a really bad interview it was Frank Gore on the sideline. I cringed as he stumbled through question after question but he's a heck of a football player. It might be the ONLY interview I've ever heard of his so maybe it was just an off day.

Gore has a learning disability and while I thought it might hurt him in the NFL, he has always worked his butt off.

I didn't know that. You can't knock a guy for that.

LOL....Nice...

The difference in a Gore/Tomlinson and a Manningham is that you can listen to Gore/Tomlinson for 3 minutes and realize they have some humility and appear to be decent guys who will help team chemistry. Manningham has none of that.

Their is a world of difference between a guy who is slow (aka dumb), and a guy who is dumb (aka arrogant and ignorant of the fact that he is dumb).

There is a world of difference between a guy who has poor language skills (IE:ebonics), and one who thinks the interviewers have poor language skills because they talk differently.

There is a world of difference (albeit not always easy to distinguish) between confidance and blind arrogance.

Which side of the fence does he fall on in these three areas?

The wrong side on all of the above.

...unlike Mario. Gore has some brutal offseason workouts, I know it's just one offseason but call it a hunch I don't think Mario does much. I am slowly hopping off of his bandwagon. I now have zero players rated in round 1.

Thomas and possibly Kelly deserve first round grades. Kelly is running again soon. It should be interesting. It's fair to give up on Manningham at this point. I think we read his potential correctly back in January, which is capable of producing the most productive NFL wr in this class. His playmaking is the kind that translates without question. But if he's a mess between the ears, then there's little hope. I would strongly disagree with those who think he lacks top talent though, but then so did Charles Rogers. The assumption Mario is not hard working is probably valid and the real reason I give up. If he was a hardworking dedicated moron, he'd still rank very high with me. From the sounds of it, he's over his head in this process and just doesn't get it. His Combine was pathetic because he had yet to hire an agent (to explain things to him) or do any specific training. He just showed up figuring he could shine. Then he hired an agent who was helping him, putting him on the right path, possibly. This agent explained Mario's issue is a lifetime lack of direction, raised by one elderly and uninvolved grandparent, etc. This agent was fired. Bad idea, I think, but who knows the details. Now, he's being exposed, which is probaby good for those of us that see the talent. Better to come to terms with the problem now.
