Texans receiver André Davis and defensive end Mario Williams were named award winners Thursday.

After returning three kickoffs for touchdowns in December, Davis was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Month for December.

After recording 14 sacks in his second season, Williams was named NFL Defensive Lineman of the Year by the NFL Alumni Association.

"I'm very excited, and I think it's an award we all (on special teams) deserve, not just myself," said Davis, who returned two kickoffs for touchdowns in Sunday's 42-28 victory over Jacksonville. "They're just as deserving as I am.

"I'm just happy we were able to finish strong, and, hopefully, this will be the foundation for something better next season."

Davis, who averaged a team-high 17.7 yards on 33 catches and scored three touchdowns, averaged 30.3 yards on 32 kickoff returns. The Texans scored four touchdowns on kickoff returns this season.

"The special teams can make just as big a difference as the offense and defense," said Davis, who will be an unrestricted free agent Feb. 29 unless the Texans can sign him to a new contract.

Davis' award won't earn him any trips, but Williams will get a trip to the Super Bowl for being on the NFL Alumni team. He'll be presented the award the Friday before the Super Bowl.

Andre Johnson won the award as the league's best receiver after catching 103 passes last season. Jerome Mathis was honored after his rookie year in 2005 as a kickoff returner.
  Good for him. Good for the Texans.

How do you get named DL of the year and not make the pro bowl? ;)
Play in a league where they start Pro Bowl voting way too early, and come on very strong the second half of the season after a lot of ballots have been cast. Not to mention on a team that doesn't get much national air time.

That sound you hear is Charlie Casserly calling the Texans offices, screaming : "I TOLD you so, you dumb sons of b#tches !!!! FIRE ME, will you? You all suck !!!!! You're going to rot in hell !!! My voice sounds exactly like Bob Costas, do you hear me ??!! COSTAS !!!!!"

That texans D-line could be the best we've ever seen in a few years. Williams and Okoye are 22 and 20 and have a lot of growing to do.

Because the Pro Bowl is like the Academy Awards. Totally ####ed up.
I agree . the pro bowl votes are a joke . M Barber should have never made it eather . And there is a line men with 14 sacks and he gets snubbed . Poor Texans . To mant Cowboys fans . people in Texas need to wake up and rout for a classy organization . like the Texans instead of Jerrys Cowboys

 Out of roughly 40 picks the Texans used in the draft before Kubiak came to the team, Casserly netted the Texans about 3 players still with the team who are above average at their position (and I'm counting Mathis as a kick returner in including him, though he could be cut this off-season). Only 9 of those 40 players are still with the team, and only a handful more are still in the league. Most of the players that Casserly signed in free agency were released for lack of performance compared to what Casserly signed them to.Casserly has zero room for I told you so's. Kubiak had the final say in the draft where Mario was taken. Casserly was the single biggest reason the Texans were a non-factor in the NFL for their first 4 years.

Jared Allen should have won this hands down...
He probably would have had he not missed two weeks for being stupid....
....which is why Aaron Kampman should've won....but congrats to Mario - I am happy for him AND the Texans.
Kampman had a great year, but Mario's stats are better in every category except TKL's and it's 48 for him vs 43 for Mario. However Mario has 3 more assists, 3 more sacks, another FF, a FTD and a PD.Someone would be hard pressed to argue stat-wise for a reason the DE's that made it into the pro-bowl in front of him.

And despite playing 2 fewer games than Mario, Allen is better in almost every category

Time to open the Reggie Bush vs Mario Williams debate again ? :boxing:
The turn about is amazing. This time last year, everyone on ESPN was talking about how horribly the Texans messed up. Now, you have guys on ESPN saying they think the Saints are better off with Bush hurt.Mario Williams was the worst mistake ever, completely overrated. He HAD to dominate as a rookie to justify drafting him over Reggie Bush. However, The Texans don't seem too disappointed in him this year. And for all the criticism the pundits on ESPN sent his way last year...he can't seem to find mentioin on the network THIS year.

 :lmao: um... what? Mario's proven to be a stud. Although the Houston D is still below average.

I would agree about Allen, too bad he's such a boozer and missed 2 games this year. Character concerns are a major issue with him (3 DUI's in 4 years.)

I will offer my FORMAL apology for lambasting the Texans for being STUPID enough to pass on Bush.
