Mark Brunell or Jason Campbell? (1 Viewer)

Does anyone have any inside info or opinions on the starting QB situation in Washington. I know that Brunell should start the season #1 but is there any chance that he can be beaten out by Campbell if he starts to struggle. With the upgrade at WR and Al Saunders being the OC, I would think the starter there could put up some respectable numbers.

I till be Brunnell for as long as he can stay upright. Once he can't hobble out onto the field anymore the Skins will go with the kid. Right now Gibbs loves Brunnell and has no problem letting his QB of the future hold the clip board....

Exactly. Gibbs is pretty loyal to his QB's and he likes to have his QB of the future sit for a few years. I see Campbell taking over next year. If you have the space on your roster in a dynasty league, stash him now.

Brunell turns 36 this fall, so this could be his farewell stint with Washington.

With the recent upgrades at WR (Lloyd, ARE) and the single playoff victory last year, I can see the 'skins going for one more push with Brunell at the helm for '06.

Campbell would seem to be in line for the job starting next summer. I of course be wrong, but that seems to be the way they are headed right now.

As long as the Skins are at .500 or above, it's Brunell's job. If they struggle, and the problem is attributable to Brunell, I think we'll see Campbell/

He is going to have to struggle BIG time.....like 4 or more INTs in a game for Gibbs to put Campbell in there. As long as Brunell is standing it's his job.

its Brunells job all year. unless he gets hurt or the Skins fall out of playoff contention early for some reason.

 I like Campbell's potential a lot. In this offense, he'll have a bright future.

BUT, that future won't begin this year barring the things you mentioned.

ETA: Campbell is a good player to stash away on a taxi squad this year, and acquire from a team that needs a starter. He'll be on my TS in two leagues.

I'd go as far as to say the Campbell is the 3rd on the depth chart, baring a FANTASTIC perfomance in camp & pre-season. T. Collins was brought in to teach Al Saunders system and is lined up as the #2 because they said Campbell is not ready.

If Brunell stays on the roids/whatever the hell he was on last year, he will take the job.

Brunell will be the starter all year and Campbell will be the starter next year.Gibbs will only be here 2 more years, and he drafted Campbell for one last SB run in 2007.

Personally I think he's got a great shot this year and a pretty good shot next year.

deja vu all over againCollins would probably be an in-game replacement if something happened, but I do not think he has the abilty to start. His role will be "Here is your ball Mr. Portis"

Gibbs is extremely loyal to his qbs and he chose Brunell. Brunell will be the starter until he is injured or flat out stinks. I say he starts this year and maybe misses a couple of game. He will go in to next season also as the starter.

There is a position battle for the #2 qb. Todd Collins is actually the favorite to be the the #2 because: a) he is a veteran and b) he knows Al Saunder's system.

How much use is it being a veteran when you have all of 18 completions in the last 8 years?

If Brunell gets hurt, Collins will probably replace him IN THAT GAME. I think they then turn it over to Campbell after a solid week of preparation with the first team if Brunell misses an extended amount of time.

Very usefull to teach your 2nd year QB while Brunell is getting all the reps. Campbell is a quick study and should have a fairly good grasp by the end of the year. He takes over (if) when the 'Skins are eliminated from the playoffs. Otherwise, next season or injury.

 This is a key to why Saunders brought him in.

Whichever one goes to church the most...
:lmao: Kidding aside, Brunell is the starter all year barring injury or elimination from the playoffs. If Brunell is injured during a game Collins will fill in. If he is out for several games, Campbell may well start them. That will depend on how he does in training camp and the exhibition games.

Exactly. Look how long Brunell remained the starter clearly sucking in 2004 before Ramsey was finally allowed to take over.

A word of caution regarding Campbell taking over. Gibbs history is to stick with veteran QB's too long rather than not long enough. It happened with Theismann before the switch to Jay Schroeder (lost on many people because of that horrific injury, but look at his 1985 stats), and it happened with Doug Williams before the switch to Mark Rypien. He's never had a veteran QB leave his team (under the pretenses of being washed up) and go on to success later on. If the 'Skins make the playoffs this year with Brunell primarily leading them there as the starter, and Brunell's healthy going into next year, my assumption would be that Brunell would start once again next year at least to begin the season. There is no head coach in the NFL with greater job security than Joe Gibbs or greater confidence in his ability to handle QB's, so he's not going to feel at all rushed on this issue.

*In the interests of full disclosure - I drafted Campbell last year in my 14-team, 40-man dynasty league. He'll be on my taxi squad yet again to begin the year.

Your spot on.

Gibbs has serious man-love for Brunell and will give him every chance. Campbell may get a shot but he'll be a on very short lease like Ramsey.

Once Campbell stats, he won't be on short leash at all. Ramsey wasn't Gibbs's guy. Campbell is, Campbell was Gibbs's choosen QB of the future.

There is still a lot of experience, such as:practicing as the backup but being prepared to go into every game

years of learning Al Sanders offense

knows how things are done in the NFL and can offer insight

Gibbs has already said it's an open competition for the backup qb spot. One note: if either of them is the holder for the place kicker, that would put them on the active roster even if they become the #3 qb. In that case, #2 will be inactive on game day and be the emergency qb.

The Washington Post reports in announcing the backup to starting QB Mark Brunell, Washington Redskins HC Joe Gibbs yesterday unveiled a nuanced, multilayered compromise that acknowledged the respective positions of QB Todd Collins and QB Jason Campbell, as well as new associate HC Al Saunders. Should Brunell suffer an injury during the course of a game, Collins would be the first to replace him. But Gibbs's decision of making Collins his primary backup came with one important condition: Should the Redskins be without Brunell for at least a full week of practice, Campbell would be the game-day starter, with Collins assuming the backup responsibilities. Never in Gibbs's tenure as a head coach has he agreed to such fluidity at quarterback, he said, but the move played into what Gibbs considered the strengths of both men. And while he laid out the unconventional blueprint, Gibbs added that performance would remain the ultimate judge and that specific scenarios would be addressed as they arose, not with a rigid flow chart. "If there's a week's work to start a game, we'll start Jason," Gibbs said. "If there's anything that would happen in a game, then it's going to be Todd. That's the way we'll start the year. Now, as the year goes, things could change. Obviously, every day and every practice and every game could change any situation, but it's the best way for us to go into the season." Just like we called it!
