Maroney - RANKING and ADP? (1 Viewer)

Maroney's stock will go way up, but IMO it will go up TOO FAR. I suspect N.E. will add another RB (and it could even be Dillon). I don't think Maroney vaults up to the 300+ carry mark next year. Someone else will split time or serve the role Dillon did last year. More carreies for Maroney, yes. A workhorse workload, probably not. I would slot Maroney in the RB 15-20 range (redraft) until we knew more of the Pat's backfield picture.
 Pretty much agree with all of that, although I do think Maroney has the potential to get an insane amount of TDs...it's tough to project that though. I think double digit TDs is a lock.
<_< both. He'll probably be no more than a two-down back. TDs are a crapshoot. He could have 2 or he could have 20.His nicks last year without being a full-time back are a little disturbing to me. This guy hasn't carried a full load since high school...
The guy hasnt carried a full load since high school? Where do you guys come up with this crap? His Junior year at Minnesota he had 281 carries in 11 games. Thats 25.5 carries a game. In that year he had games where he carried the ball 46 times, 43 times, 36 times, he also had games of 26, 26, 25, 21, and 20 carries. If thats not a full load WTF is? As a Sophmore he averaged over 18 carries a game. What more do you want? 50 carries a game?
Yeah, but he only carries one football at a time. That's just not putting in full effort. The bottom line here for me is that Maroney is hard to project because Belichick is hard to predict. The only offensive player who seems guaranteed to produce more or less consistently with past years is Brady. That Belichick has never relied upon a lot of talent at RB in NE (or frankly Cleveland for that matter; Dillon was past his prime in NE) only makes this murkier because we don't have something to model this on. At this point the ideal situation is to have Maroney as your RB2, and know that he may surprise and put up RB1 numbers.

Pats just re-signed Evans to a 2 year deal. That's awesome for them. So they now have 3 RBs heading into camp. They'll probably add someone else but at least they kept Evans. He might be able to handle some goal line work too.

From the Boston Globe:

February 24, 2007

INDIANAPOLIS -- Running back Corey Dillon won't be returning to the Patriots, but fullback Heath Evans will be in the fold. The team and Evans have agreed to terms on a two-year contract, according to a league source.

Evans, 28, was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent March 2. He played in all 16 regular-season games and three playoff games last season, contributing in a variety of roles -- from lead blocker, to ball carrier, to reserve third-down running back, to special teams jack-of-all-trades.

After the season, Evans, a native of West Palm Beach, Fla., expressed his desire to remain a Patriot.

"Fit-wise, it couldn't be more perfect," he said at the time. "I could care less about money. I'm a loyalist. They were good to me at a time the game of football wasn't."

The 6-foot, 250-pound Evans was initially signed by the Patriots Nov. 1, 2005, after he was released by the Dolphins. The Patriots had injury concerns at running back and Evans chipped in with 192 yards on 51 carries despite having most of his NFL experience at fullback.

He re-signed with the Patriots on a one-year deal for 2006, and finished the season with 27 carries for 117 yards (4.3-yard average), and seven catches for 34 yards and one touchdown. When Evans rushed the ball, it was mostly in short-yardage situations.

The return of Evans means the Patriots will have second-year player Laurence Maroney (signed through 2010), nine-year veteran Kevin Faulk (2009), and Evans (2008) under contract at running back.

The Patriots have 12 players scheduled for free agency, a group that includes tight end Daniel Graham, receiver Troy Brown, punter Todd Sauerbrun, linebackers Don Davis and Larry Izzo, running back Patrick Pass, and outside linebacker Tully Banta-Cain.

I have heard that the Pats behind closed doors were a little disappointed that Maroney was not able to take on a greater share of the workload by the end of the year, and I am not sure if that will impact their strategy for 2007.

The Pats should be equally disappointed with their play calling down the stretch. They virtually abandoned the idea of getting Maroney into space with stretch running plays and screen passes in order to capitalize on his speed. Instead, they ran him over and over between the tackles - an area that he clearly needs work in - where he was repeatedly met in the backfield.

Maroney can be a dynamic, game-changing back ala Clinton Portis in Denver. But only with equal parts Maroney becoming more decisive in the tackle box and the Patriots altering their blocking scheme and play calling to maiximize his one cut abilities.

Maybe they shouldnt have had him returning kicks all year then.

Knowing how secretive the Pats are. Is it possible that they told Dillon he'd be number 2 behind Maroney next season and that set him into action. That would lend itself toward the Pats thinking that Maroney can be the guy.

Who is really out there?
Let's not forget that there will be cap casualties soon that may also add to the free agent pool.
So you guys are thinking that a team is going to cut a guy who is good enough to eat into Maroney's production? You don't even have a player in mind and you are having "mystery player to be named later" eating into his touchdowns? I guess that's why this is the offseason.
God love it.
