Marshawn Lynch is APPEALING his suspension? (1 Viewer)

Ok, if people could please give me a clear explanation as to why Marshawn Lynch is appealing his one-game suspension from charging onto the field from the bench during a game AND THEN putting his hands on a ref (pushing him, actually), I would really appreciate it.

Hell, I have no idea how it could have been only one game!  I would think charging off the bench into any sort of scrum should be one game.  Putting your hands on a ref and pushing him?  That should be a minimum of two games.

So on what freakin' basis could he possibly be appealing this?  Or is it because the players are SO entitled, and conditioned from the league offices bending over all the time, that they feel it's their God-given right to appeal, even when they've done the crime.

Yeah, I'm a bit hot about this one...

That escalated quickly

It's part of what they negotiated in the CBA. He'll lose.

Kind of an odd thing to get worked up about IMO but whatever.

!st, seems like the default is to appeal. 2nd- He can make the argument that he was trying to help de-escalate, supported by the fact that he was actually trying to help a player on the opposite team and didn't initially realize it was an official, 3rd- There's precedent (though I don't know how similar the cases are) in Tayor Lewan being ejected but not suspended for putting hands on official.
Not saying he can, or should win, but appealing doesn't seem so crazy to me. He'd sill be ejected and fined. Just taking the other side here. Don't have an opinion on how much discipline is enough.

Appealing a suspension SOP.

Yeah, the suspension should have been multiple games, but Lynch is pretty irrelevant now, and the Raiders will probably benefit from not having a washed up RB in there that they feel like they have to give a token 10-12 carries.

All this.

Only reason I might not appeal is if the appeal were to delay his suspension 2 weeks more to the Patriots. If I'm his coach I'd rather he be out against the bills or fins than pats.

I believe Lynch has a cousin who is a collective bargaining lawyer who has recently gone through a rough financial patch.

This appeal is being filed really just to protect his cousin’s wallet.

Standard procedure. You think he is sorry for what he did? He's a punk. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2017/04/11/marshawn-lynch-knocks-phone-out-of-teenagers-hand/ I grew up across the bay from Oak town. Let me tell you, there are a lot of punks that come from where he grew up so in that regard he is nothing special or unique.

http://www.tmz.com/2015/09/21/marshawn-lynch-allegedly-threatens-13-year-old-boy-family-says/

"allegedly threatened to "slap the smile" off the face of a 13-year-old boy who was asking for an autograph this weekend"

"He told my nephew, 'How would you like it if I slapped that f**king phone out of your hand and that smile off your face.'"

Medina says he was absolutely shocked at Lynch's behavior because the group -- comprised mostly of high school kids -- get autographs at the hotel from other NFL players all the time and they've never had an incident before. "

SOP.   dude was/is an idiot for sprinting off the bench and then for making contact with the official.  i'm surprised it wasn't more games.

because he doesn't want to miss a game and check.

see: Tom Brady or any other player appeal

It's a joke. I mean, I understand it's a bargained for benefit in the CBA, but this is why the NFL gets rather salty in certain cases when it comes to sticking to their guns.

Common sense says Marshawn got a break when he wasn't suspended multiple games yet feels the need to appeal when he's clearly in the wrong.

I don’t believe that TMZ story. I didn’t hear him say that in the video. All I saw was a guy walking down the street and a bunch of people not leaving him alone, hounding him while he’s on the phone.

I’m no Marshawn apologist - he got his 1 game suspension for running onto the field and ejected for making contact with the official - all 100% earned and a dumb thing to do.

but Lynch does a ton of work with kids and that story doesn’t ring true at all. Would I be surprised to learn he said it in response if the group was antagonizing him?  Did he ask them to give him some space and they didn’t?

There’s such a thing as common decency in the world and respect for other people. Just because someone is an athlete doesn’t give you the right to follow him out of his hotel and down the street filming him & hounding him for an autograph or picture. I would need to know the whole story and see evidence that he actually “threatened” a kid. Notice TMZ said the magical “don’t sue me for libel” word “allegedly”. That means they can’t prove it.

I grew up across from oaktown too, in San Mateo; and I live in the East Bay now. And yet I don’t generalize all people from this area as “punks” - there are lots of good people in Oakland, too. I work a farmers market in Oakland every single Saturday, and there are tens of thousands of wonderful kind and lovely people there.

So thanks for bashing every person in my region because you don’t like Marshawn Lynch.

Meh. I'm still bitter that Walter Payton was ejected for contact with an official in 1980. He stumbled when approaching the ref. I've seen dozens of similar occurrences since without ejection.

Lynch should have got one game for contact and one game for leaving the bench. NHL has automatic suspension for leaving the bench during a fight. MLB not so much.

You didn't see the video of him slapping the phone out of the kids hands? TMZ purchased the video, but that doesn't make it untrue. He's in a public space, not his house where guys are trespassing on his private property. He's a punk.

ETA: and these guys are not harassing him. They admire him. He has freakin ear phones on. He could easily have just ignored them. A true gentleman would have taken time out of his day to take 5 minutes and give an autograph, but even if he didn't you don't spit towards them or assault the guy and slap his phone. Lynch isn't some sort of god that people are not allowed to video in a public space.

he's a punk. If he wasn't also a talented football player he'd have nobody defending him in this thread.
Obviously - because if he weren’t a professional football player he would not have run onto the field. Or been suspended by the NFL. Because he wouldn’t be in uniform. Or on the sidelines for that matter. And a group of kids wouldn’t be harassing him after leaving his hotel. Because that would just be weird. And TMZ probably wouldn’t have paid for the video. You know, since in your scenario he’s not a talented football player. so yeah.

Totally agree with you on this one. If he weren’t a talented football player, no one would be defending him.

I’m gonna go out on a limb and guess that he’s stoned and, additionally, has gone his entire adult life with people letting him do whatever he wants?

I don’t remember who it was or where I saw it, maybe someone can help, but there was a story of him unabashedly hitting on a new teammate’s wife in the parking garage after a game.  The guy was saying how he thought he was joking at first but then realized he was completely serious and just didn’t care at all about the social unacceptability of it or disrespect. Basically it was “I’m gonna say whatever I want to your wife in front of you and there’s nothing you can do about it.”

Link?

Probably should have got more considering ive seen a lot less get one game.  I think you have to consider more when he comes from off the field onto it to partake

What has the average suspension been for a player leaving the sideines to enter a fray and/or making contact with a ref?

Don’t know the baseline so can’t tell at all if one game is “right.”

What I do know is that there isn’t no sense of standardization or predictability or stability in the way the NFL metes out punishment. I don’t understand any of it so don’t blame the NFLPA for encouraging appealing on this basis alone.

I think we have this all wrong...he's appealing that the yards should count, doubling his output for the season.....

So who is dropping this clown for whatever is on the WW? I'm thinking about it, but I have the luxury of him being a backup that will likely never start for me & no one will trade me for him so...

Going to hold for now. Definitely bench though.

Appealing is such a joke. What's his defense? Peters had it coming? Referee brutality? Oh maybe it was a misunderstanding and he was trying to do a "straight outta Compton" act for the crowd with that sideline run.

Let's be honest, he really ran out cuz he wanted to go home and this was the least expensive fine. If anybody knows about fines, it's Lynch.

My first thought was he wanted to quit and this made him look like he cared. It's almost too obvious that when things go good it's time to dance and when it's tough going it's time to find a way out of the line-up.

What a crock. What possible motivation (let alone proof) would there be that Lynch wanted to go home/get out of the lineup. Ridiculous statement.

Also ridiculous and interesting to me is that while there is so much consternation and pushback about Lynch appealing an action that literally had zero impact on, well, anything or anybody, there seems to be zero consternation about Zeke being able to continually appeal and skate from implications of actions that did have an impact on someone (i.e. alleged domestic abuse).
