Alrighty! I'd rather not rehash the Captain Marvel story if you don't mind, I don't think anyone is getting swayed by either side of the argument.
Up next is The Eternals, and as I've stated before it is the most fearful of "dud" I've been of any of the Marvel movies. More excited to see Hawkeye especially after the end credit scene for Black Widow.

It kind of feels like there's not all that much to get excited about from Marvel these days. Join me as I give my thoughts on every movie in the MCU Phase 4 lineup.

Iron Man and Captain America were consistent foundation pieces for the MCU. The build up to the Avengers films gelled everything together.
Now the MCU no longer has that base to rely on to set a foundation for their other films.
Critical Drinker makes some strong points
1) How much functional rope is left for Spiderman, Thor, Ant Man, GOTG, Dr Strange and Black Panther?
Thor will hit it's fourth film soon but how long will Hemsworth want to keep pushing that character forward? No one knows exactly where Panther will go after the tragic death of Boseman. Dr Strange is not a series you can use as a foundation piece. The other films are hitting their third installments and how much more can you push forward there after that?
2) None of the fringe Marvel films will have the Avengers arc to protect them by building fan interest and momentum ( much of which was hurt by the pandemic)
3) Inserting the first Captain Marvel movie between the last major Avengers movies instead of Black Widow was a massive mistake.
Now you have a character that's been written out ( along with RDJ and Chris Evans) and a limping franchise that's been shifted into an ensemble.
I believe Feige cares very much if large sections of the MCU fanbase are unhappy. There is a clear formula to the Marvel films. But what resonated with fans was the human sentiment behind the most beloved characters. Stark watching his friend dying in a cave telling him not to waste his life. Rogers watching his best friend Bucky die and then be reborn. Loki shouting at his Frigga that she is not really his mother, but does so with regret. Starlord finally playing the last tape his mother gave him.
The product is still packaged the same way, but will the charm and the magic behind it still be there? I have strong doubts.

If I ask the question, Captain Brohan calls me a bigot. Even though Kevin Feige agrees with me since he turned the Captain Marvel franchise into an ensemble, I must still be a bigot. RDJ is not there anymore to be the signature player in the MCU and carry a big ticket stinker like Captain Marvel, but the only reasonable answer left is that I must be a bigot.

Maybe. But based on the interview with the director this week, Eternals is major for the overall MCU. Also sounds like she took this super seriously.

I saw some rumors over the weekend that BP2 would be pushed back as they figure out the path they want to take after Boseman's death.
Seems like some of this is moving back into summer as well, allowing them more time to settle that and things like X-Men/FF entry into the MCU

I'll be going this week to catch it at a matinee. My son is my movie watching buddy, and he just doesn't want to see this one at all. It is definitely the least excited I've ever been about a Marvel movie. I'm staying away from reviews and spoilers.

Wife and stepdaughter went on Friday. I passed because they could only get 9PM tickets at a "recliner" theater so I'd have had a nice $15 nap (I was already tired by 5PM that day).
They both liked it, and my wife and I will probably catch a late matinee showing. I'll probably stay out of the thread and try to avoid as much info as I can.

My daughter (who has watched just about every superhero movie) said Eternals wasn’t very good.

This is basically how we felt. More of a "hmmm, ok, uhhhh" feeling. As a stand alone movie it was fine. Nice visuals, some decent fight scenes. Liked the characters. Spent half kind of waiting for something to happen. But it does enough for me to be curious about how they integrate them in and what it does for the future of the MCU.
Also, the two post credit scenes appear to set up two very different directions and could be both fun and exciting...

I am pretty shocked at the audience score for Shang Chi. I thought it was entertaining but better than End Game and the rest? It was campy fun at times but I wouldn’t want to watch it over Guardians of the Galaxy. I liked it but didn’t think it was the best Marvel movie ever.

Shang chi was an ok movie.
[Spoilers]Katy was a fun character/actress. There were some issues..
Shang chi himself was cardboard. There was never any danger to him, he was not a fun character like thor or tony stark, he was just a guy who had been trained as an assassin from an early age who had red on his ledger and had a best friend who could shoot arrows surprisingly effectively. We already have one of those.
His super martial arts skills were kind of fun to watch, but i didn't really love the development. Tony stark built a suit and you watched it happen slowly and as he got stronger you always understood it. When Captain America got the super soldier serum and the shield, you could see how he developed. When thor was a badness with his hammer then lost his hammer and had to figure out how to be worthy of the power of thor and had to fight with loki, you could watch that whole progression and see how it happened. With Shang chi, apparently the important thing is being raised by a mean dad and a loving mom and dragging his right toe in a quarter circle behind him and then you get magic powers. It wasn't something that really explained his powers or made me connect with him as a character.
The good and bad creatures were all pretty meh. Not much different than the Chitari or countless other bad creatures in these movies. These ones suck out souls instead of shooting lasers. Neat. It did a good job setting up the idea of the magical world of dragons and such.
His father was really the "bad guy", and they did a pretty good job with his character development and arc. Thats always been important for marvel movies, having a well developed bad guy.. see thor dark world for an example of how much that matters. We didn't really understand what the rings could do, just that they were really powerful.
The mother was kind of a generic female obi wan. They struck her down and she became more powerful. Cool trope, bro.
The character that carried this was Katy, but it was a little weird trying to shoehorn her into also being a hero. Is this going to be a thing? Heroes bring their significant others with them?
It did a pretty good job as a popcorn flick. Overall it was a decent but forgettable action movie that both benefitted from and suffered because of the high expectations of the Marvel name[/spoilers]

Agree with all the comments above and this. I’m not sure Id go with stupid but it wasn’t well flushed out. Almost could have been split into two movies to be honest. If they had continued the first half and maybe put Shang in a Tony Stark almost died situation where he had to come back from that and learn the magic way, that could have been movie 1. Do the magic monster a bit better in movie 2. I mean, the monster could read minds and produce mental images but the fight with it was more Michael Bay than well thought out bad guy.jobarules said:

Yep. That’s what threw me. Best rated MCU movie it was not. Enjoyable and better than Black Widow, yes IMHO. Different movies but I enjoyed Shag Chi more. No chance I’d put Shang Chi over Infinity War/End Game, Guardians, Civil War, etc.

It’s funny how people can see things so differently. She was the worst part of the movie for me. She was the Jar Jar Binks of the movie IMO.
One of my gripes with the movie was that the father was never really the "bad guy".
I mean he had potential to be the bad guy, and we were told he was a bad guy, but he gave up his bad guy-ness when he met the mom, and even in the end he ended up being a conflicted character, mostly wanting to reunite with his dead wife, than true evil bad guy.

That’s because the bad guy of the story was his dad not the monster. The problem is that they basically treated the monster part like the big dragon in how to train your dragon. You know, the movie where the scrappy underdog and his lovable friend rode a dragon and fought a much bigger dragon that was too strong for anyone else to fight especially without a dragon but he almost didn’t get to join in the fight because he was fighting with his father who didn’t believe in him but then he almost died and his father realized that he was strong after all just in a different way and so he gave our hero his blessing even though it went against generations of his experience as a ruler. Totally different movie obviously but is it really

I meant she was basically the comic relief - but was more annoying than funny.
Although not sure I'd go as far as saying she's "Jar Jar"... but then again I am not a fan of the actress except in small doses.
I also thought it was ridiculous that she was brought along in the meeting with Doc Strange, Bruce and Cap Marvel - as if shooting an arrow makes her a Super Hero (Hawkeye jokes not withstanding).
Yeah, that’s why I think this movie didn’t need the train your dragon monster (100% thought that while watching). I think they could have just overdone the first half and shelved the dragon for the next movie. I mean the bad dragon was able to put thoughts in his dad’s mind but the battle was underwhelming. Reminded me of Black Widow where the bad guy at times appeared ridiculously powerful (had his own multi-trillion dollar floating fortress and just like that he was introduced and dispatched. Thor Dark World was like that as well and suffered.

It’s not so much that I liked her, and her scenes definitely strained credulity… it really made no sense for her to be the archer who saved the day… and when wong came to get Shang chi at the end he should totally have left her there and closed that circle thing behind him. But she was the only one with a personality. Shang chi could have been played by almost any actor with fighting skills and you wouldn’t notice a change in the movie. If she was jar jar, he was Hayden Chrysanthemum.

To me that was one of the few interesting things about him. You met him late in his character arc. In the beginning he was the standard bad guy who wants power and there’s only one thing left he can’t conquer so he wants it more than anything. Then he meets the mom and he sets that aside to be with her. Then he loses her and he wants revenge because she was the most important thing. Then he starts hearing her voice but it’s really the evil monster thing. Then you meet him.
His character wasn’t a one note bad guy who wanted the power for himself. He was a one note bad guy who wanted his wife back, maybe, but he blamed Shang chi for not saving her. Everything that happened to shang chi afterwards stemmed back to that night, and shang chi had to fight his dad to earn his respect and get the rings so he could vanquish the monster, while the father finally saw his son become the man he was supposed to be and realized the lie he had been living so he sacrificed himself and gave him his birthright. All pretty standard tropey stuff but it made him a more complete villain than just mean dad wants power fights son and loses in the end.
It was. I started my discussion off about it being good but it wasn’t 98% best reviewed MCU movie good. The rating surprised me.
