Marvel Cinematic Universe - Fantastic Four - No Homework Required (3 Viewers)

So the rumor is Anya Taylor Joy will be playing SILVER SURFER in the Fantastic 4 MCU movie.

Yeah I think I'm done
That cannot happen. No offense but just a total miscast if that is the case.
Don’t you need to like see how it is before making this judgment?
Generally yes, but the Silver Surfer has a definite image that is ingrained in reader's minds and she doesn't fit it. That large of a mismatch right off the bat would be difficult to overcome.

Nova is another powerful character, but does not have as iconic a look as Silver Surfer and I think she could do fine in that role.
Only thing ingrained in my mind is a super shiny silvery dude. Wouldn't recognize any facial features I don't think

Yep, that's what it is. An imposing silvery dude, rather than a willowy silvery woman. It's akin to the people who did not like Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher, because they just didn't fit the source material. The Reacher from the TV series met people's expectations.

She's a fine actress, I just don't think she is a good choice for this role. Again, most people have no idea what Nova looks like so there wouldn't be a built in disconnect, so I think she would have a higher probability of success in that role.

It’s all make believe. I don’t care if comic book movies change a man to woman or a white dude to a black dude or whatever. I have no attachment to silver surfer the man, thus silver surfer the woman is fine by me (so long as the acting and storyline are good)

Great comp on Reacher and totally true the show's casting is WAY better.

I know nothing about the comics or Galactus, but the Silver Surfer always seemed very cheesy to me. An alien dude on a surfboard? Seems terrible. I like the idea of this Nova character better.
I liked SS a lot in the 80s. But yeah.
This was part of the reason I always liked him. In the 80s, Marvel partnered with Dungeons and Dragons and created an RPG. My friends were laughing because I got "stuck" with Silver Surfer while they had better known characters, but it turned out he was super powerful. Started reading some of his stuff and it was just cool. So yes there is a big cheese factor but I have a healthy dose of nostalgia with it.

I think that's the rub for a lot of people. If you grew up with the character and know them intimately from the comics, then you want to see an accurate depiction. Consider how some people got upset when the Little Mermaid changed races, or if Tiana from The Princess Frog was now to be played by a red-headed irish lass? If you grew up with these characters, you have a little more invested and don't want to see the change.

With that said, if it is Nova (the herald and not the corpsman), then I'm all for it. I think that's a good fit and is akin to bringing in lesser known characters and developing them (ala GotG).

Aka, racism. Not everyone but far too many.

is this a lot of people though? I mean, it might be a lot from this forum considering how nerdy we are, but Marvel appeals to families more than just grown men. Kids and adults who didn't grow up reading the comics don't give a **** I bet

The dark skinned elves in Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power brought forth a response from a segment of the fan base that was down right unsettling....

From a business perspective, though, those people are the bedrock of your audience, right? If you're projecting revenue, surely that group is the die hards you want to be able to count on. Why change the formula when it's an ingrained character? If the comics haven't changed the character thus far, why is that the diversity mechanic you want to engage? Aren't there other ways that you can address diversity concerns without alienating your core audience?

I agree with this, but disagree that changing the little mermaid's race is the same thing. You're talking about specific established characters on the one hand and general character classes ("elves") on the other. I totally disagree with the LOTR backlash, but understand a Silver Surfer backlash.

I still remember the ridiculous reaction the fan base had when it was first announced that Starbuck was going to be female...

well done :lmao:

Watched the last episode of Loki again last night. It really stinks that they are moving on from Majors and Kang (I understand why).

I think Loki and Majors could have made the MCU interesting going forward. Majors is such a good actor. Him and Loki seems to have a really unique chemistry. I rewatched their exchange in the final episode about 4 times.

It took a while to reply this but she was brilliant as Starbucks and I’ll be honest that none of the others who were complained about are close to as good as she was. Social media wasn’t what it is but I don’t recall ever hearing any complaints about her because she was amazing. I think the trolls go away if the change works. They get louder when the change didn’t work because then it’s more obvious that the change was intentional and not based on acting chops.

I think that was the part I was most disappointed about. You could tell that scene was a way to make Majors go away. Kind of one of those, hey we found this and I guess it was X all along. It definitely felt like a last minute change.

I thought it was about as good as could be expected If it’s a last minute change. Disney going with the ultra popular Hiddleston over majors as their most powerful / most important character for the next phase could be a great decision.

I understand why they did it but it still didn’t work just in terms of the show. It stood out so much after almost 2 seasons of episodes. I wish they just replaced him with a good actor. People might complain but I don’t think she was anywhere near as good as Majors.

What’s confusing? Majors very possibly going away or the old video showing that Kang wasn’t really the leader and Renslayer was so they can move on from Kang as the main bad guy.

Who’s the “she” here?

The audience would have totally understood replacing the actor, and the multiverse variants would have made it very easy to do. This one seems like such a no brainer to execute it makes you wonder why they trashed all the buildup.

Renslayer. I have no clue what her real name is.

When the season started we got some details that Renslayer and Kang worked together. The video at the end IMHO made it seem like Renslayer was the leader of their army and much more influential. I think they amped that up more than the comics so that Renslayer could take over the void that potentially occurs if all the rumors are correct that Kang is being shelved so to speak.

I disagree.

If anything, they just are Nerfing Kang by way of the throwaway line related to Ant-Man defeating Kang the Conqueror already. But I think they will actually not fire Majors and continue with their plan.

Maybe I did, but that still made me think that way, especially with all the fun going on with Kang Dynasty.

Looks like he got some bad legal advice. Some kind of settlement or plea would have had this down to next to nothing. Then the news cycle would have passed it by and he would still be Kang. This just made it worse really.
LMAO he sounds like an animal that ****ed around and found out. Bad legal advice  Good riddance.

If you read the article though, they describe the type of charges he was facing as rarely going to trial. But he wanted a public full exoneration.

Reading through the Washington Post article, I'm glad he's gone.

AFAIK we don’t know what legal advice he received. Ultimately to go to trial was his decision and it seems to have been a mistake.

I think Loki and Majors could have made the MCU interesting going forward. Majors is such a good actor. Him and Loki seems to have a really unique chemistry. I rewatched their exchange in the final episode about 4 times.
I think that was the part I was most disappointed about. You could tell that scene was a way to make Majors go away. Kind of one of those, hey we found this and I guess it was X all along. It definitely felt like a last minute change.

What’s confusing? Majors very possibly going away or the old video showing that Kang wasn’t really the leader and Renslayer was so they can move on from Kang as the main bad guy.
Kang wasn’t really the leader?
Did you watch when they left Renslayer at the end of time with Ms. minutes and Ms. Minutes showed Renslayer that she was really the leader of the army, not Kang?
Huh?
When the season started we got some details that Renslayer and Kang worked together. The video at the end IMHO made it seem like Renslayer was the leader of their army and much more influential. I think they amped that up more than the comics so that Renslayer could take over the void that potentially occurs if all the rumors are correct that Kang is being shelved so to speak.
I think you completely misinterpreted
Maybe I did, but that still made me think that way, especially with all the fun going on with Kang Dynasty.
Well, I’m not so sure I misinterpreted that video that Ms. Minutes showed Renslayer. I definitely think they pushed it further than the comics in the very real probability that Majors would be gone.

Well, given that variants don't all look the same, they can pretty easily recast and say the events of Loki had something to do with that too.
