Marvel Cinematic Universe - Fantastic Four - No Homework Required (3 Viewers)

i am eternally hopeful and even i have to admit that madam webb and kraven the hunter were nothing short of atrocities visited upon humankind likely by the devil or russians take that to the bank brochachos
[Trump]Madam Webb and Kraven the Hunter are two of the greatest movies, maybe the greatest movies, ever made. Many people are saying that.[/Trump]

Saw Cap 4 last night with my son. It wasn't bad. I went in with low expectations, but it was a fun ride. It's not a blockbuster like EndGame, but it wasn't a total crapfest like IM2 or Thor2 or Eternals. It fell right in the middle for me. A decent, if not predictable, storyline mixed with some fun dialogue and a couple of "why did they put that in there" throwaway scenes.

If you go in thinking "I'm here to watch a comic book movie" you'll leave saying "I just watched a comic book movie". It was fun but not fantastic. Would've been better if they kept red as a secret, but it still works. There's an end-credit scene, which had my son look at me and say "no **** sherlock" :lmao:

I gave it a 6. My son gave it a 6.5 so he can call it a 7 on a sliding scale. Said he didn't think it deserved a 7, but felt bad calling it a 6.

How would you compare this to Falcon & the Winter Soldier?

I can't believe Madame Web was even made - it was so bad (outside of having some hot women leads).
seriously it was like the studio said we need a loss for tax write off purposes green light and then it was born into this world like the spawn of satan take that to the bank bromigo
How frequently do they need to make Spidey movies to retain their rights? I wouldn't have thought this frequently. Not sure what counts either, but the Spideyverse and Venom movies were relatively recent, and of course the MCU Spidey movies might count since I think there was some joint responsibility on those too.

Found this: Forbes

Buried in the terms is the revelation that "the 'Production Term' extends indefinitely as long as SPE continues to produce and release Pictures as follows: As a general rule, SPE must (a) commence production of each Picture within 3 years and 9 months after the release of the preceding Picture and (b) release each Picture within 5 years and 9 months after the release of the preceding Picture.

"If SPE releases 3 Pictures within 8 consecutive years, then SPE may extend the foregoing deadlines as follows: (a) commence production of the next Picture within 5 years after the release of the preceding Picture and (b) release such Picture within 7 years after the release of the preceding Picture."

In short, Sony does indeed need to continue making movies or TV shows set in the Spider-Man universe in order to retain its rights to the character. The contract was drafted in 2011 and was amended in 2015 and 2019 so the details could have changed and Sony declined to comment on them.

I enjoyed F&WS. Similar type of storyline with good action. I think F&WS had a little more of that buddy cop humor and relationship building to it that made it good. Cap 4 focuses some on Sam trying to measure up to Steve, while trying not to get bogged down in that storyline. It gives some background from Norton's Hulk movie to get people up to speed on Ross. Also explores some of Ross in his new role. I wanted to see more of Giancarlo's character, so maybe he'll show up down the line.

I think the buddy cop format of F&WS was a little bit better, but drug out a little too long. Cap 4 is a little more light hearted but could've used some of that character development from F&WS. Some missed opportunities for me, and a few characters thrown in Cap 4 that really didn't need to be there.

Sony has now said they are done making Spiderverse movies with Kraven being the last.

Hopefully that means Marvel can work with more of their Spidey villains down the road.

Who doesn't want to see an Avengers type movie with Spider-Man, Daredevil, Deadpool, Kingpin and the Sinister 6 plus whoever else fits in.

They have most of those characters already established so it wouldn’t be too difficult.

Guess Mysterio’s death would have to be reneged somehow but that seems easy as they kind of left it up in the air.

Wouldn't be to hard with his illusion tech, plus despite the "reports" by J Jonah Jameson, do we really know he died?

was there a body?

There seems to a be a large gap between the critics reviews and the audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics have not liked the movie (50% rating) while the audience has appeared to like it so far (80% rating)

Saw it yesterday with my boys. Did not like. The action was fine but the story was a convoluted mess. And the characters are boring. I liked the tv show much better than this movie. At least there was banter.

There were so many re-shoots that there were continuity issues all over. I didn't think the story was all that convoluted. Maybe if you didn't see the Eternals or the original Hulk it would be pretty confusing.

I definitely did not see eternals and haven’t seen the hulk in 17 years. If that’s a requirement I’m sure 90% of the audience will be lost.

Kraven wasn't that bad as a one off. I wouldn't even finish watching a trailer of madame webb.

wouldn't say it's a requirement but the story makes a lot more sense without waiting for exposition as the movie goes along

We’re going Monday. Thanks for setting reasonable expectations.
If it’s better than quantamania I’ll be content.
It was definitely better than quantamania. It is a second class Winter Soldier (which is one of my favorite movies). I thought Mackie did a decent job carrying Cap's shield. Harrison Ford was good. I thought the CGI on Red Hulk looked good. Villain was kind of weak. The story drug on a little bit. I would give it a B overall. I'll have to update my tiers in the OP and see where it fell.

Kid and I enjoyed. Wasn't a great Marvel movie but was entertaining. Mackie and Ford were good. A lot of exposition for those that didn't see Eternals or Hulk.
Moved along, good action, fun movie.

I liked the head of security being a former Widow. Missed opportunity to have Zemo in the raft at the end. Could have fun with him, red hulk and the leader all on the raft together.

I thought NWO was awful, not Eternals awful, but Thor Dark world, Dr Strange 2, Black Panther 2, Ant Man 3 tier bad.

I really hope one of these new Avenger movies pulls Marvel out if this crappy movie funk they have been in or it will be time to find something new to follow.

Didn't we all know the newest Captain movie was going to be bad?
I heard somewhere it was a B or B minus.
I didn't hate it. Read a lot of things that told me I should hate it, but I was in the mood for basic action popcorn cheese and it delivered.

I think 'B' is charitable (it's C- "ish"), but it's not an 'F' by any means. And it's miles above the dreck they've been putting out lately.

I thought it was fine, and hopefully the first turn in righting the Marvel ship.

The previews for Thunderbolts look very good.

This was an average Marvel movie - and what brought it down is no one was really asking for a General Thunderbolt Ross redemption arc or needed the tying up of the loose ends of Norton’s The Hulk, 17 years later. It was a decent action movie but very forgettable.

This is an interesting comment. Every list asking about loose ends or credit scenes that went no where has the Leader on there. Where I agree it is an odd one to put in after so much time has passed, it is often asked about. Could it have been done better? Sure. Was it as bad as its being called? Probably not.

Fair point as I’ve seen those articles also, but yeah it’s more that it’s 17 years later and it’s shoved into a Captain America movie.

I like the movie but it’s not one I’ll rewatch much - maybe just once when it first comes to streaming.

Every time a new Marvel film comes out it reminds me of the failure of Black Widow. That was the easiest franchise to peddle and they blew it.

Just write a Mission Impossible movie and put Black Widow in the Ethan Hunt role. Or have her roaming the earth like Reacher. Scar Jo could have cranked one of these out every year. There are hundreds of things that would have worked better than what they did. Killed a golden goose of a franchise.

Freaking Milla Jovovich made a fortune playing Black Widow in the Resident Evil movies for gosh sakes. Frustrating.

When would you have done these movies? Where in the timeline and how many movies? Or is it a Disney + series with mission of the week?
Not criticizing, I just don't understand the complaint.

I didn't mind the movie and where it fit in, I think delaying it so long after Endgame was the problem. Had it been released between Civil War and Infinity War, it probably would have been better received.

No problem! I would have definitely done it sooner than they did (doing the movie after she "died" was a puzzling decision), and I think it would have worked on the big screen. I'm not sure Scar Jo would have been into a weekly thing, but that could have really worked in the right hands. Think of how Netflix handled Daredevil. Now boost the budget a little and you've got something.

Where I think they did the character a disservice is they tried to shoe-horn her into the Marvel mold as if she had super powers. Black Widow isn't the character you build a $200M movie around, which is what that movie reportedly cost to make. As a comparison, 'Logan' cost half as much and was 3X as effective. You make a series of solid, tight $30M-50M movies where she does spy stuff. Keep it low-key with some laughs (kind of like how they handled Ant-Man 1). Black Widow is basically the Batman of this group - put her in some Batman type stuff. Keep it grounded. She has to do some detective work, piece things together, check in with her handler, go to exotic locations, meet with informants, solve mysteries, do some John Wick karate, shoot some henchmen, stop the bomb, find the dangerous thing, expose corruption, arrest bad guys. It works as a series or a series of films.

But what they did was put her in a loud, long, forgettable mess.

Don't get me wrong, the movie did some things right. I thought the setup was good, had a good cast, and has standard good Marvel action/stunts/effects.

But whoa man, the script / tone / scope / villain...ugh. Even the Marvel humor was kind of limp. And don't get me started on how bad they shart on Red Guardian.

Black Widow deserved a much better send-off.

And don't get me started on how bad they shart on Red Guardian.
I had no idea who this was, and I wish I'd never found out. He's just so badly writen.
Let's see how he's treated in the Thunderbolts*. Wasn't sure if it was the writing or Harbor's portrayal. I didn't mind him so much. The only issue I had was him trying to be a rival of Cap who was frozen in ice when RG came about.

I always took that as RG being a blowhard and trying to show off - that he was more than what others thought of him. I think that attitude is inline with the comics, but he does seem to be more of a joke in the movies than I expected him to be. But whenever RG brought up being Caps rival, I always thought he sounded like he was lying or trying to convince himself and whoever was listening that it was real.

Also want to chime in - I love me some David Harbour. He's consistently good as an actor. It wasn't his fault (=

I'll watch the Thunderbolts for sure, but my expectations are pretty low. Looks like Marvel wanted the Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy to have a baby. Can dime store Black Widow (Yelana) manage the heavy lifting needed to center it? We'll see. But they can count on my $20 bucks on week one.
