Mathews On Short Leash (1 Viewer)

We are missing something. Mathews must be hurt. Leaving fantasy out. Battle is so bad. He's a good gl back but he's just awful. Rushing for 2 yards a carry.if they use Battle as the starting RB going forward they are in trouble. Again were talking real football.

I was talking about the last couple games as far as battle is concerned, but whatever.

The only explanation is that it was a punishment. Maybe Matthews mouthed off to AJ Smith about his stupid fumble comments earlier this week.

Mathews has a hole to climb out of: San Diego starting running back Ryan Mathews is not being trusted by his team. He fumbled last week in his season debut and the Chargers are making him think about NFL. Jackie Battle started for Mathews. Mathews, who played extensively in the fourth quarter and made some big runs, ended up with 61 yards on 14 carries. Whether he is being pushed or not, the Chargers will be better off when Mathews makes a bigger impact.

Battle has done #### all with the carries. Give it to Mathews.
He's averaging 1 TD per 9 carries. Imagine what he'd do with 300 carries?
Do you really believe what you are suggesting here?
Says the guy who was cherry picking stats earlier to make Mathews fumble problem look less than it is. :lmao:
I posted facts. I think it is relevant for those citing Mathews as having a fumble problem that he has lost just 1 fumble in his last 7 games. You call that cherry picking?

He has 2 fumbles and 1 lost fumble in his last 7 games. Again, facts. Do you call this info relevant or cherry picking? Do you think it is possible this info shows he has improved in this area? Or are you just trolling?

Unpossible!

When asked if the Ryan Mathews and Jackie Battle timeshare would continue, the Union-Tribune's Kevin Acee replied that Mathews will "get another shot, (he's) too good."

Acee also added that "(the Chargers) love Mathews too much" and that head coach Norv Turner "could not stop praising (Mathews) after the game." Veteran plodder Jackie Battle handled all of the red zone work on Sunday against the Chiefs, and then the two backs rotated series throughout the game. There's not a whole lot to worry about here. Mathews should be back as the team's bellcow back in due time. He's just too much more dynamic for the Chargers to keep him off of the field. Turner seemed to be dolling out some punishment to Mathews after a Week 3 fumble. Look for a breakout game next week against the Saints.

It's alllll good.

I don't think anyone here is claiming that Mathews is done as a starter in the NFL. He'll be given another chance. But certain people put their head in the sand and ignored the signs that he was, in fact, on a short leash. Those people were made to look like fools today and whined in the game day threads about not getting their fantasy points. Lesson learned hopefully.

Yes, it's cherry picking to find a stretch of time that suits your argument and use fumbles lost on top of it. No one was buying what you were selling, least of all the Chargers coaching staff.

I like him as a buy low, especially with the Saints matchup.

Whether or not a fumble is recovered by the fumbling player is more luck than anything, so a fumble counts against a player regardless of whether the team lost it or not.

But every week, it's the same thing with Mathews owners..."Just wait till next week!" It is downright comical at this point.

I say bull#### with this nonsense. Why not punish Rivers when he forced passes and threw 20 INTs last year? Just doesn't make sense to give Jackie the Snail Battle the starting job.

my question is does AJ Smith make lineup decisions or has Norv stated something about RM fumbles?

all I ever saw was AJ mouthing off this week

Battle will be the WW equivalent of fools gold this week. If you play in a league with FAAB budgets, be thankful. Mathews will also, not surprisingly, be a premiere buy-low target.

I have Alfred Morris, and will still go with Mathews next week v. the Saints. He is too talented to sit.

This week was tough as an owner that started him but long term it may be the best thing that happens with Mathews. He has all of the talent in the world but IMO something is missing, whether it's toughness(playing through the nick type injuries) or attention to detail(fumbles, blocking assignments early on). Guys like this need to know that they are replaceable, nothing is handed/given to them. They need to work. I liked that the GM(that drafted him btw) called him out and his coach sat him for an inferior "try hard" guy. If he handles this well, as motivation, we could see a completely different player from here on out.

Ryan Mathews: Mathews to be feature back again soon for SD

t wasn't the typical game for Ryan Mathews.

He didn't start Sunday. He didn't play at all in the third quarter. He had just four carries by the start of the fourth.

Then, the Chargers began featuring their third-year running back. If he keeps protecting the football, it won't be the last time.

Mathews paid some penance against the Chiefs, working in a more complementary role after a costly fumble last week in his season debut. The Pro Bowler had 10 carries for 60 yards with an eight-yard reception in the fourth quarter of a 37-20 win.

For Mathews, the reduced usage didn't come as a shock.

“I kind of expected it from last week,” Mathews said. “But you can't (dwell on) that. You've just got to keep playing and cheering on your teammates when you're not in and go 100 miles per hour when you are.”

Coach Norv Turner said after the game he has “great trust” in Mathews.

For much of the game, he had a different way of showing it.

Jackie Battle drew the start. Mathews didn't play a snap in the team's opening drive, which spanned nine plays and 76 yards. The Chargers ran 11 plays during four trips to the red zone, and of them, Mathews had his number called once on a hand-off from the 15-yard line.

The Chargers are still very high on the young back.

But it was clear they wanted to send him a message about ball security.

“We just have a lot of guys that can make plays,” Turner said when asked about the backfield split. “I thought it was important to let Jackie start the game. I wanted to make sure we got into a rhythm. We had a plan for specific things for Ryan, and I thought he responded in the four minutes right there at the end. He was rolling and hitting it.

“You ask about the confidence I have in him. We're trying to put the game away, and he's the guy handling the ball, so I think that answers that question.”

Mathews finished with 14 carries for a team-high 61 yards. He added two catches for 21.

this whole thing is so bizarre. Im not going to even predict whats gonna happen cuz its just not worth it. Turner is a horrible coach. Im gonna start Mathews next week vs NO and pray he retakes the job honestly cuz I dont have better options. That being said, I think he at least lost the goal line role for the foreseeable future.

 A rhythm of what exactly? 2 yards per run? Just brutal. This is actually scary if this actually wasn't just a punishment/motivational ploy for Mathews.

If it WAS purely motivational, and he goes on to have a tremendous season due to this wake up call, then maybe it was worth it.

But it just stings right now because Norv probably cost most of us our games this week.

If he does explode next week vs the Saints, I might just try to trade him off for a RB with a sane HC. I'm a huge Mathews fan, but I can't trust a coach who thinks he needs to get Jackie freakin' Battle his share of touches to get his offense going. If Mathews fumbles during the first quarter of a future game, you could be looking at a 0 from your RB1/RB2 starter.

Really hard to believe Norv keeps getting head coaching gigs
I agree, but you do realize the Chargers won pretty easily on the road today, right? So it's not like his decision to not give Mathews the ball a lot cost them the game or anything. In fact, they grabbed control of the game before Mathews ever saw the field.

starting battle next week with confidence
lol this is a joke I assume?Battle is unlikely to see 10 carries again. It's Mathews job from now on, if you can get him for Gore/Morris/Leshoure go get him right now before he plays NO
:lmao: I love how people say this stuff like they know for a fact
not fact but it's clearly the most likely scenario. Mathews is still one of the most talented backs in the game and Battle is below average. everything being said by coaches points to him being taught a lesson this week and they want him to have a huge role as he's the best player they have

I dont think anything is clear. They benched their most talented back for nearly an entire game for a career special teamer and won the game 37-14. Afterwards, Turner said he wanted to get off to a good start, thus started Battle. I dont think anyone can say anything definitive about the touches going forward.

You'd never guess that in this thread. There is some serious Mathews owner bitterness in here even though SD destroyed the Chefs. But Mathews missed out on carries so obviously Norv, AJ, and everyone else in SD are a bunch of idiots because Mathews didn't get more carries, and TD's. Entertaining.

beat writer closest to team says Chargers love Mathews too much and will give him the feature back role soon. teams tend to let their best players touch ball most and we will see next week

Being that this is a fantasy football site yeah a lot of us are upset about the amount of lost FF opportunities for Mathews today. It likely cost many of us our games this week. And I love how people keep saying that they blew the Chiefs out as if it had anything to do with Jackie Battle. Battle did nothing on the field today that Mathews couldnt have done and done better. The Chargers destroyed the Chiefs b/c KC turned the ball over 6 times. It had NOTHING to do with Jackie Battle.
