Mathews - Tolbert Thursday Night Football (1 Viewer)

2. Both guys have been dinged up - there was a stretch there when Tolbert was out or hurt and Matthews benefited. Matthews increased role over the last month was due to Tolbert being hurt not him out performing him.
mathews has outperformed him all year
:goodposting: Mathews in 7 games509 rushing342 receiving3 td's16 game ave = 1,163 rush/781 rec/6.85 td'sMathews is having a great season, almost a 2k total yard pace.
Tolbert is having a 75 catch 14 td type season. If tolbert could get 15 carries and gl with even more catches he could be a beast.

I expect them to run a lot. Teams have absolutely murdered the Raiders on the ground this year--Denver nearly put up 300 yards on them last week. I have Mathews in one league, and I'm absolutely starting him there, as this is definitely the kind of matchup that can let a feature back put up top-10 numbers for the week. I also have Tolbert in another league, and I'll be starting them, but only as a flex, behind Foster and Steven Jackson and ahead of a bunch of WW receivers.

Not Blindly But Still Fairly Optimistic But Also Totally Reasonable Prediction:

Mathews - 18 carries, 110 yards, 1 TD; 4 rec, 40 yards

Tolbert - 12 carries, 50 yards, 1 TD; 5 rec, 35 yards

Maybe Mathews just isn't as good as we thought/hoped.
He is, but unfortunately he can only do it for 10-15 plays a game before breaking down.
He didn't break down tonight. They needed Tolbert in to help block due to the injuries on the line, in addition his usual pass-blocking role.I started Mathews and the only silver lining I can think of is that I didn't also start Tolbert.

well, the chargers offense struggled in the first half and couldnt hold the ball. the raiders run game used a lot of clock. most of the 2nd half the raiders were up 14 points and mathews isnt the passing down back.

The SanDiego Line was being dominated all night. I guess that must be the reason. Tolbert has a much more stocky build that I'd assume would help in those situations. But still, is Matthews useless at blocking? Can we continue to expect this against physical defenses?

They just don't want Mathews on the field in crucial situations... it's obvious. The team doesn't believe in him and the fact that he leaves the field injured after every tackle is just pathetic. Mathews looked better actually blocking for the pass than Tolbert... Tolbert barely blocked... he let defenders run free as he slid out for the pass that barely ever came his way. I don't get it... and I guess this is why San Diego sucks.

he took a pretty big shot, he may have indeed been injured.
That was in the 4th quarter. No one mentioned him being injured and his role was the same throughout the entire game. Come in for one play or two, then don't see him again the rest of the series. It's going to be real hard to start him next week against the Bears unless there is some mention of getting him in the game more.

never wish injury on anyone, but it would behoove all mathews owners if he just went on IR so tolbert could become a clear RB1.

He played the first two drives and looked good. I think it was once the left tackle went out and it became clear that there was going to be consistent pressure on Rivers that they decided they needed Tolbert. He's the far superior blocker of the two. Mathews has always been knocked for not picking up the blitz or being marginally effective. I don't think this was the game-plan coming in, but was an adjustment they made because of the line struggles. That opinion is only reinforced by the timing of Mathews' disappearance.

only way either puts up RB 1 numbers is if the other is injured, otherwise they are both solid flex plays (with the upside of RB2 numbers).

side note - adios norv turner, its been a long time coming.

What makes you say that? One of them has put up RB1 numbers in all but two games this season, usually Mathews.

ALL Mathews owners? Not. I don't have Tolbert so it would behoove me to see Tolbert be the guy on IR, NOT Mathews and then I'll take my chances from there.

Don't overreact to one game. Mathews has had a nice season, a top 10 RB season in PPR, with 6 games with more than 100 total yards. Before tonight, he averaged 20.25 touches per game. He's only missed one game and he's shown toughness, a fight to stay on the field. He was close to playing Sunday and he played well through an injury tonight. I'll start him with confidence next week, assuming he'll be fully recovered (or closer to it) from the groin injury.

:lmao: SOlid flex plays. mathews was the 6th ranked RB before last week. He was an RB1. Jeez talk about people overreacting to one bad game that wasnt even a bad statistical game.

seriously, unless injured he'll be locked into my lineup as my RB2 all year. Jeez some people are ridiculous.

I'll have a hard time starting Mathews over Tolbert the rest of this season. I keep waiting for Mathews to beat the wrap on him, but he doesn't. Meanwhile Tolbert just packs a lunch and goes to work every week.

I could see Mathews doing well late in the season again like last year, when the games are meaningless for SD.

First 7 weeks of the season, Mathews had 122 touches to Tolbert's 75 touches. Thats a 60/40 split in favor of Mathews. In week 8, Tolbert was out and Mathews got all the touches. In week 9, Mathews was out and Tolbert got all the touches. Last night, Tolbert had 12 touches to Mathews 9 touches despite Mathews being more effective with his touches (5.7 YPC & 7.7 YPR). So why would you let one game influence you with 7 other weeks of experience that tells you to start Mathews over Tolbert?

I'm not questioning Mathews talent, which is superior to Tolbert. It's the constant injuries and/or lack of heart I see that keeps me from putting him in my lineup.

at least he came away from this game uninjured. he and the offensive line have a week and a half to get all healed up and then tear it up @ CHI. :football:

lack of heart? 5.7 ypc behind one of the worst performances by an OL I have ever seen pretty clearly demonstrates Mathews is not lacking heart.
