Matt Jones? Does he get another shot next year? (1 Viewer)

What are people's thoughts on Matt Jones?

Will a team give him a shot this off season?

Will he ever be a starting WR again?

I loved this guy's upside coming out of the draft.

6'6', 235 pounds, 4.37 40 yard dash, very good hands = potential beast

He was really starting to put things together finally in 2008 as the #1 WR for Jacksonville with 64 catches, 750 yards and 2 TDs. Then he has 2 beers on a golf course in the off season and his career is over? It just doesn't make sense to me.

I think you forgot to mention the whole cocaine thing with him.

Yeah. I agree he is done, but I don't think it's the cocaine problem. Or at least not all. There are guys who have killed people still playing in the league. I think Del Rio probably badmouthed Jones' attitude and effort to the point where other teams thought he simply wasn't worth the trouble.

Matt Jones is as good an argument for ignoring the combine as any. I remember Wannstedt used to love the guys who could bench press a house and run like hell but they couldn't play football.

Another strike Jones has against him: he's only played WR for a few years. He was a QB at Arkansas. His one great gift was his speed. As each year passes, the greater the likelihood he's lost a step.

very  People keep forgetting to bring up the COCAINE problem. He is done in the NFL, image problem 101 for an average WR at best

He'll work out for some team this summer, that will be the chance he gets. What he does with it is up to him.

I think he can pull it together still and have hung on to him for that reason, but if he isn't on a team week 1 next year, he's done.

Year away isn't going to do him any good. I can think of only Antonio Bryant as a WR that took a whole year off [and not under the guidance of an NFL team's training] that went on to do anything of relevance.

Most guys get depressed & lazy and flame out. I think Jones falls into this category. He had some tryouts and didn't get a sniff. Got to hurt his ego.

surprised he couldn't get into a camp yet. Guys like Martrell Mallett are signed, but Jones remains on the street

He's only 26, so he should have a good 3-4 years before his speed starts to decline

he was getting his life together before the slip up on the golf course

He'll have a shot this off season, what he does with it is up to him. It's been almost two year since he got in trouble and he's kept his nose clean, so to speak. He's also getting married very soon so maybe he'll settle down and grow up.

I never considered him a starting WR.

The coke stuff wouldn't matter if it's truly in the past. Jamal Lewis's conspiracy to distribute or whatever charges were way worse.

And no coach's word would keep him out of the league if someone else thought he could contribute.

So I conclude that Matt Jones just sucks, but good luck to him if he's still trying his hardest to get his career back.
