Maui/Oahu (1 Viewer)

Friday 5 a.m. can't come fast enough.

I lived there for almost 8 years and did the flight a lot coming back to the East Coast to visit family. Go hit the beach or pool as soon as you get in, Sun helps you get acclimated to the time difference. Try to power through that first day you arrive and you'll feel pretty good on your first full day.

They tell you not to drive around the NW side of the island on Maui.

I suggest following that advice. I did it and it's kinda treacherous and there's not all that much worth seeing.

Hey guys, staying at the Turtle Bay resort in Oahu this week and planned on going to Pearl Harbor during my stay. Traffic here is terrible, but is it less terrible on Sunday or Monday? Is there a preferred day of the week to go? For anyone that's been there lately, any tips or suggestions? Is there a good/bad time to arrive?

Thanks!

I lived at Turtle Bay for 6 months in the late 80's. Hope it is still as nice as I recall.

Imho Pearl harbor is not worth it.... do Wamiea/Sunset/Haleiwa, or go the other way around to Kaneohe/Kailua/Makapuu.

Turtle Bay...still awesome

PH is a big deal for my wife (military family) so I'm going for sure. Just wanted to make it as cool as possible

At TB Go out towards the horse stables and then walk out towards ocean. There are some wwII bunkers and things on the point. Then keep heading west and you will come into a bay with big banyan trees forest and a pretty quiet beach. They filmed lost here. Look for chickens running wild around beach.

Fair enough, and I guess it is kind of a must do... I just always found it to be a let down.

I took surf lessons at turtle bay. That place was awesome. If you are staying at turtle bay, you have to eat at Kahuka grill. Turn left out of front entrance. It's like a mile or two on the left.

Heading into Honolulu from North Shore will be awful traffic at rush hour. So even on a Monday as long as you leave after that you'll be ok. Thake the H3 on your way home it's a nice drive/loop around by Kaneohe.

Thumbs up to Ted's Bakery near Turtle Bay. Excellent food (and desserts of course).

What I saw of Hawaii was even better than advertised, just an amazing little paradise in the middle of the ocean. My soul feels renewed

Love that place and the post trip high you have for a few days when you get back.

Olivine Pools was one of my favorite family adventures ever. Simply stunning.
Paid the $15 and was told no swimming. Got down to the pools and no swimming meant they locked the gate. Had to view from above only. I was a little miffed, but it was still beautiful and we had swam in so many falls already.

Best place to watch the Super Bowl on the North Shore?

Will be staying in Haleiwa, on the beach, about 15 minutes from Turtle Bay.

I'd rather watch the beach myself. I'd rather be in the water than either.

My brother went recently and he enjoyed a place called Lei Lei or something?  Or for more "local" atmosphere, there were always local bars on the north shore.. nothing fancy but fun.

Again though.. early afternoon on the north shore?  Your ### better be on the beach.

Had lunch here yesterday.  Four minute walk from where we are staying.  Was very good.

808grindz. Best breakfast yet! Better than Gazebo.
Haven't eaten at Gazebo, but can confirm that 808grindz is fantastic. Expect a line.  The vanilla mac pancakes and fried rice are great.

I'll also agree with everyone recommending Mama's Fish House and Lahania Grill.  They are pricey, but the food and service are top notch.  The view at Mama's is beautiful.

Leoda's Kitchen and Pie Shop, which is south of Lahania and just off 30, is a great place to stop to eat after a day trip to Hana or Haleakala.

Just got back from Oahu on Monday. Had a great time! Went to Pearl Harbor and hiked up Diamondhead Crater but besides that just hung by the pool and beach. Stayed in Ko Olina. That area is going to be crazy in a few years because they are building an Atlantis there soon. Glad I went when I did because I wouldn't want to be there when that place is up and running.

We will be doing a family night in Oahu in between Kauai and Maui.  Just booked our tix to PH so plan is to fly in around noon, visit PH which should go until about 4PM.  Staying at the new Marriott property down in Waikiki.  What should we do with the rest of the night and the next day until we fly out to Maui (time is still flexible on that)?  Build my itinerary, FFA!  Will have two boys, ages 9 & 11 with us.  Should we rent a car (assuming yes)?

Basically need to figure out a quick snack (if possible) before PH, good dinner and something to do that night.  Then breakfast and lunch and some morning/early afternoon activity.

Dinner at Dukes - it's family friendly, iconic, and you can probably walk there or Uber.  Hike Diamond Head in the AM.
