max scherzer called up (1 Viewer)

he has roughly a 932:1 K/BB ratio in the minors and the dbacks just called him up either b/c of owings' ankle or b/c gonzalez sucks.

don't know how good he'll be, but he's probably worth a look at least if anyone needs pitching help.

He is pretty good. I was going to go see him pitch today at TEP. I am now glad I backed out at the last minute.

Thanks to the morons at Yahoo telling everyone to use their #1 priority on him on the front page...I'll probably miss out on him. Nevertheless, for some god-forsaken reason, possibly to have him fresh come playoff time, the D-Backs are going to use him as a middle reliever for the next month or so...so use the priority wisely!

Save your waiver priority for someone like Kershaw, Adenhart, one of the Rays, or someone else. The Y! guys have been stroking Scherzer for a while, I'm not surprised to see it continue, he's good but I don't think he's anywhere near as good as they're making him out to be.

7 K's 0 Hits, 0 Walks, 0 Runs in 4.1 innings of relief work after the starter gave up 6 runs in 2 innings... Looks good enough for #1 waiver priority to me.

Wow. I just stumbled across his statline, not realizing that they were going to start him off working out of the bullpen. That is one hell of a debut.

Before you go using your #1 waiver priority on him, one name - Johnny Cueto. Like Cueto, Scherzer's electric, but he's still a rook and pitching in a hitter's park. If you're going to ride out his bad outings have at it, if you're an itchy trigger fingered owner don't waste your time. Although I have to admit the different eye color thing is pretty cool and scary at the same time.

i'd have to think that they give him gonzalez's slot in the rotation, at least until david comes back. Not that Max would lose it by a poor performance, but the Dbacks are smart to limit his innings this year and have him available come october...

He's good, and I'm lucky enough to have him on my team, but his value is sky high right now. If the right offer comes along, I'd have no problem moving him.

I bet the powers that be are looking at Webb, Haren, Owings, et al and loving the fact that Sherzer could shorten a game to 6 innings with no problems, come playoff time.

I'll be trying w/ my #3 waiver priority as I only fall to #4 if I get him.

With the news of Adenhart possibly getting the call up later this week, I hope to get at least one of these guys as I know #1 is waiting for Kershaw.

Well the new speculation is that he may be put in the rotation NOW. Yeesh..... Adenhart coming up this week, Scherzer possibly in the rotation... what is a high waiver pick to do?

Per Rotoworld:

Max Scherzer will start for the Diamondbacks on Monday.

Scherzer will take the mound against the Phillies after striking out seven in 4 1/3 innings of relief on Tuesday night. He should be owned in all NL-only leagues and mixed leaguers should strongly consider taking a flier on him.

Anybody else kind of secretly hoping that they don't get him?

I put in a claim, and I'm just about to check....

I already have a young/green staff - Hamels, Lincecum, Bucholz, Verlander, Marcum, Ervin Santana

and it will cost me Wellemeyer, who has a pretty good overall line despite giving up 4 runs in his last two outings.

He and Sheets are probably my oldest most mature guys.

I am glad I picked him up. I think he will have a good season for the DBacks. Especially since Smoltz went to the DL and is going to come back to close.

Bump for tonight's outing..

and pere rotoworld he goes back to the pen when Davis comes back from the DL; the dbacks want to limit his innings his rookie year...

no worry though, when Rjohnson inevitably has to shut it down, Max will take his spot in the rotation.. until then, enjoy the two start week.

Prediction:

6 2/3: 2ER, 5 Hits, 2 Walks 8k, W

These two things relate how?
He must be in the same boat I'm in. Smoltz went into my DL slot and opened up a place on my roster for Max. If Smoltz comes back to close I can see how Max does until then, and maybe ditch Wood, slot Smoltz into Wood's spot.I kind of like the idea of Max in long relief or closing better anyway. Might help him keep that ERA and WHIP at zero.

Why would they close him with the way Lyon's going right now? Or are you thinking they'd just use him if Lyon craps the bed a few times?

I bought the hype, and the hype won.

Just kidding, we'll see how he does next time out. But I still like him better coming out of the pen.

Now I just have to hope they don't send him back down when Davis comes back.

i can't imagine him getting sent back down.not an AZ insider, but i think a good role for him would be to come out in long-relief, mostly when the unit is pitching. i imagine they don't want johnson going deep into games. 5 innings of johnson's lefty slider followed by 3 innings of scherzer's heat from the right side sounds like a good formula every 5th day. it also puts them in a nice situation to slide scherzer in when johnson's back starts acting up. they could do pretty much the same thing with davis (not during the same rotation turn of course).

I hope you're right, but I'm thinking they start cutting the kid's MLB service time once Davis comes back. The lessons he needs to learn are at the major league level, so I'm hoping they keep him in a long relief / spot start role in the bigs. There's nothing left for him to learn in AAA.
