Mendenhall vs Stewart (1 Viewer)

I know Stewart is the SP's pet but I like Mendenhall a lot more.

Stewart concerns me for a few reasons:

He was not a touchdown machine in college.

He is not sudden. He may have great track speed but he doesn't blow through the hole.

He has been banged up in a conference not known for tough defenses.

I won't hold the one year thing against him because RM has a similar history but it is worth mentioning.

Guy may be talented and have the measurables a lot of people look for but I don't see it.

I do see it in Stewart, and if injuries are not a concern, he's my #1 rookie pick this year. For his injury history though, I have him a few spots down the list, and the next in line to be #1 on my board was not McFadden, but Mendenhall.

CP nailed it. This topic has been discussed to death.

I guess it won't hurt to beat the dead horse a little bit more though.

These two backs are my top two rookies for the 2008 class. I could see either one of them becoming the better pro player, but I favor Mendenhall because he seems like a safer pick. I think he'll be more durable and I love the fact that he went to the Steelers. A lot of people were down on him because of his situation. I actually think Pittsburgh was one of the 3-4 best places in the entire NFL he possibly could've gone. They have a great track record of developing their first round picks and they have a talented young offensive infrastructure (Roethlisberger, Holmes, Miller) that should help Mendenhall in the same way that the Indianapolis supporting cast has helped Addai. Unless he's a total scrub, Mendenhall is probably going to put up pretty good numbers in Pittsburgh's system. The only thing that worries me about him is his lack of top overall athleticism. He's not as explosive as the elite NFL starters and he may end up being more of a pounder than a big play type.

Stewart is the better athlete on paper. He's a freak of nature from a size/speed/combine standpoint. He runs in the 4.4 range at 235 pounds, bench presses a small house, has a monster vertical leap and broad jump, and closely resembles The Thing from Fantastic Four. At his best, he looks unstoppable. He was a man among boys in his bowl game. His ceiling is very high. That said, there are some issues with him. He's so big that he sometimes appears to have trouble regaining his momentum and making smooth cuts. He takes too many hard hits and has had trouble staying healthy. His body language sometimes has a lackadaisacal quality, almost like he doesn't want to be out there. Character issues are minimal though and he demonstrated the ability to play through pain last season.

Overall, I'm pretty high on both of these guys. They're both high quality first round prospects with the potential to develop into true every down backs. I won't be surprised if both of them are consensus top 10 dynasty RBs by 2010. IMO they become viable picks in startup dynasty drafts at about the RB13-RB18 range.

I pulled the post EBF referred to. I was concerned it came off rude, though it wasn't meant to, so I pulled it. Basically I just would suggest a search of the last several months on the subject. Lots of good opinion and debate available to you.I'll just add that anyone picking 3rd in rookie drafts should be careful not to let situation take precedence over talent. Whether it's Stewart or Mendenhall who is still on the board, take him. Don't take Forte or Smith because it looks like they may get more action in 2008. You'd regret that in the long run.

I like Mendenahll's talent and love his situation in Pittsburgh. Think Joseph Addai in another year. (I think he's got Top 5 potential within the next couple years)

i like Stewart (not to the extent of Mendenhall however). Not crazy about his situation personally. I place him 3rd in this year's class. (Still possible Top 10)

:goodposting: I shake my head everytime i see Forte or Smith go ahead of Stew/Mendy.

Unless Stewart has some major injuries he's better then Mendenhall at pretty much everything.
:goodposting: um, he already DOES have a major injury, hasn't practiced much, if at all, this pre-season, still recovering from off-season toe surgery..

Toe injuries to RB's can be devastating...

Not saying he can't be something special eventually, but he won't be much of a factor in the early part of the 2008 season..

:goodposting: :goodposting: I'm higher on Mendenhall, personally (surprise), but I can see the arguments for both guys, and I think both will be very good if they avoid career-ending injuries. The combo of Stewart with the new OL in Carolina is as-yet unproven - lots of new personnel to mesh there - but the chemistry seems decent from what I've heard/read about when Stewart has practiced. These 2 are the class of the rookie RB crop, i'd say

who has the better NFL career?
I think in the long run Mendenhall. I had him #1 on my board prior to the draft. With his going to Pittsburgh, I do think his success will be limited this season, and possibly next. But over the long hall, I think he will finish his career with better stats than Stewart.I, frankly, just don't see Stewart holding up in the NFL. Look at Steven Jackson and see Jonathon Stewart.
