Moss to the Pats

(April 29, 2007) -- On Draft Weekend 2007, the biggest tremors in the football world came from a trade between the New England Patriots and Oakland Raiders.

Randy Moss is on the verge of becoming a Patriot after New England agreed to send a fourth-round pick in Sunday's draft to Oakland for the mercurial and maddening wide receiver. Before the trade is completed, Moss must undergo a physical, which he arrived in New England on Sunday morning to take. Assuming Moss passes, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady will be passing him the ball next season in one of the most dynamic and electric quarterback-wide receiver combinations that has ever played in the NFL.

Moss already has agreed to dramatically restructure his contract, which is scheduled to pay him $9.75 million this coming season. New England was the one and only place Moss would agree to take a reduced contract, and he did so knowing that he would have the chance to win a Super Bowl. With the offseason that New England has had, no team in football has a better chance.

Moss also comes to New England with the warning that, as Bill Parcells used to say, the light is yellow and ready to turn red. The Patriots have notified Moss that under no circumstance will they tolerate any of the transgressions that have marked his career. The first controversial incident that Moss is involved in will be his last. The Patriots insist they will release him.

But now that they have him, they are thrilled. Brady is said to be very excited upon learning the news that his team had agreed to a trade with Oakland. Patriots coach Bill Belichick feels the same way as Brady. After spending previous seasons lacking a big-play target, the Patriots now have a plethora of them -- none any bigger than Moss.

How the trade evolved is a story itself. Ongoing trade talks from throughout the offseason continued Friday and intensified Saturday night after the draft when the Raiders called the Patriots and got New England to sweeten its offer of what had been a sixth-round pick. New England agreed to trade a fourth-round pick to Oakland.

The trade caps a remarkably and busy offseason for the Patriots, who have repositioned themselves as the team to beat in the AFC and the NFL. They have added former Ravens linebacker Adalius Thomas, former Bengals cornerback Tory James, former Dolphins running back Sammy Morris, former Dolphins wide receiver Wes Welker, former Eagles wide receiver Donte Stallworth and former Bengals wide receiver Kelley Washington.

Oakland was in a position where it had to trade Moss. It could not afford to pay him his base salary while also signing No. 1 overall pick JaMarcus Russell to a contract that is expected to include about $30 million in guaranteed money. Plus, Raiders coach Lane Kiffin had been anxious to deal Moss and start over fresh, able to implement his own ideas with his own players.

I love this move for NE. I may be the only one who thinks this, but I believe Moss will flourish in a structured, disciplined, workmen's environment -- that has all the pieces in place and has a chance to be a real winner.

wow. Can Belichick keep his head in the game for the entire season?

Brady will be taken higher in FFB drafts this season. The talent is there, it's Randy's heart that is usually in question.

SO basically, the Raiders give a 4th for BMW and McCown, and get one back for Randy Moss?

GREAT franchise.

You're not the only one, pretty much every analyst has stated this. I agree with it too. I actually wish Moss wanted to stay and play, but he didn't and that made him a huge cancer on a rebuilding team and a huge cap hit. The Raiders are a better team today then yesterday with his departure. NE is also a better team, as I beleive Moss will do very well in NE.

I agree, Moss is the kind of player that SUCKS bad when his team is bad, but when his team is doing good, he will as well. :jetsfan:

A motivated Moss will make the Patriots a force, giving Tom Brady his first legitimate star WR. That said, how long can we envision Moss staying motivated?

For the Raiders, addition by subtraction. There is no way they wanted to go into this year with an unhappy Moss being a poison around the player they want to build their franchise around.

NE is going to be a tough team next season.

Now, where does this leave moss fantasy wise??? should be very interesting where he lands in fantasy drafts.

See how you build a winner?

1. Commit to winning the LOS

2. Grab skill position guys on the rebound in free agency / trades.

So Thompson picked an unknown WR like James Jones in the 3rd rather than trade the pick for Moss.

What an idiot!!

Can we run him out of town now?

I'll get the tar. Someone please bring the feathers.

Hey Ted Thompson, way to screw the pooch you #######.Make that you stupid ####### #######. :hot:  :hot:
Thompson is the most hated person in Wisconsin, but this was a case of Moss essentially being a free agent and being able to name Oakland's trade partner because of his salary. Moss ending up in NE is because Randy Moss wanted to go to NE. You can blame TT for a lot of things, but not this one, imo!Just give the Pats the trophy now..holy crap!

This is an obvious guess on my part but I believe that this is just what the doctor ordered to get Moss back in that elite tier of WR's. I wish him well and am very happy that he didn't end up with the Packers.

From the article above:

This might help explain why another team did not make a better offer.Oh, and also   :hot: :hot:

Keep sitting on the big pool of money there Teddy boy, you can be the GM with the largest unused salary cap. How cool is that??? You can win the Super Bowl of salary caps!

You da man!

  Hooray! Addition by subtraction.
Spoken like a Bengals fan after ridding themselves of Corey Dillon a few years ago.
I don't believe anyone ever accused Dillon of giving less than 100% on the field. The same cannot be said for Moss.Moss very well may go onto resume being a All-Pro caliber WR, but it was never going to happen in Oakland. In order to give a Lane Kiffin a chance to succeed, Randy Moss had to go.

So, it looks like the Pats ended up getting Randy Moss (and a new contract) and a #1 pick for the #28 pick in the draft. Great value.

I love this move. If it goes well the Pats O can be absolutely devastating. If not it only cost a #4 and the Pats move on. Right now the Pats have Moss, Stallworth, Welker, Gaffney, Caldwell, Washington and Jax (and probably Troy) at WR. Add in Watson, Thomas, Maroney, Faulk and Sammy Morris and this o can be lights out as well as being able to take an injury or two.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the Pats try to unload a WR like Caldwell today although I'm sure they wouldn't get a ton back. They have too many WRs and something's got to give here.

In Bill/Scott we trust...it's a cliche but it's very true.

Geez, not like Brady needed more weapons. He has to be challenging Peyton for top FF qb this year.

I have one word to say about this, and it's not a nice one.

I've always liked Moss, and I've always hated the Patriots.

Fantasy wise, this will move Moss and Brady up, but I'm going to be a little cautious. Brady will still spread the ball around, and Moss isn't quite as physically dominating as he used to be. (too many ankle/leg problems)

I can't imagine them keeping more than 5 or 6 wr's. Caldwell and Troy will be released. Maybe Gaffney or Washington as well.

Might as well give the Pats the trophy. If they dont get to the show someones head is gonna get cut. Can you say 19-0?

This explains the odd deal that sent a Pat's 3rd this year to the Raiders for the Raider's 3rd NEXT YEAR and a 7th this year.

So the Raiders basically traded Randy Moss for Mike Wiliams and Josh McCown.

Agreed that something's gotta give here. The other thing is only Welker and Troy can help out on special teams.

Unbelievable move by the Pats. I wish the Cowboys would have done it. Low risk impact player. Pats look like the team to beat for 3 more years. At least now the Pats Fans should admit that they overpaid for Wes Welker!!

Great move. Randy Moss is the most talented receiver in the NFL.

How many WRs does everyone expect NE to carry when it's down to 53? IMO all those players are roster worthy.
They wont keep them all. They probably will just trade them for a bunch of 5,6,7th rounders in next years draft. They will then package them and have the top 3 picks in next years draft. This after winning the Super Bowl.I swear this team could run through a room filled with horse crap and come out smelling like a Championship. :lmao:
