Contra Costa Times

The Raiders hit it big by signing undrafted free agent Chris Carr last year. He developed into one of the league's best kick returners and a solid backup defensive back. However, they want him to improve his punt returning ability, an area he struggled in all last season. He broke few returns on punts, fumbled too often and made too many poor decisions on when to field punts and let them go near his goal line. Once he gets down the basics and gains more confidence, he figures to be a top-flight punt returner as well. . . . The Raiders signed QB Aaron Brooks to a two-year contract ostensibly as the replacement for jettisoned starter Kerry Collins. However, his contract is structured in such a way that Brooks won't be back with the Raiders next season unless he renegotiates his contract or has a monster season this year and compels the Raiders to honor the second year as it stands. This points to the Raiders looking to make it through this season with Brooks and paving the way for either Andrew Walter or an unknown draft prospect to take over in 2007. So, look for the Raiders to draft either Matt Leinart, Vince Young or Jay Cutler in the first round, be it with their seventh pick or a higher pick they acquire via a trade between now and then. . . . K Sebastian Janikowski enters a season for the first time with his job in jeopardy. The Raiders haven't signed a kicker to challenge Janikowski for the job he has held down the past six years. Yet, that is. Expect the Raiders to bring in at least one kicker to challenge Janikowski after a season in which he finished with the worst percentage among those with at least 10 attempts. He no longer is viewed as untouchable because he hasn't developed into the difference maker the Raiders envisioned when they drafted him in the first round in 2000. He still has a strong leg and the ability to make a high percentage of his field goal attempts, but he needs to regain his consistency and do some things that set him apart from his peers.

C0MEBACK STORY: WR Ronald Curry finds himself rehabilitating a torn Achilles' for the second straight year and wondering just where he fits in to the Raiders' immediate and long-term plans. They already have Randy Moss, Jerry Porter and Doug Gabriel at receiver, with three other talented receivers waiting their turn. However, Curry showed in 2004 that his skills are special, and it is worth the Raiders' time for them to wait for Curry to recover from the third torn Achilles' in his football career. He has great hands, above-average speed and the rare ability to think like a quarterback because he played one until he reached the NFL. Those traits enabled him to become a reliable target for Collins, especially on third down. Curry's rehab is going well, by all accounts, but he likely won't be turned loose until training camp, at the earliest. Curry figures to be with the Raiders for years to come, as long as he isn't used as part of a package for the Raiders to move up in the NFL draft.

I'd rather the Pats get him than draft a WR.

Despite the "praise", tough to get worked up about a guy who can't stay on the field and is, at best, the 3rd or 4th receiving option on the Raiders.

The guy's coming off 2 major achilles injuries and seems buried on the Oakland depth chart, but he looked great a couple of years ago, outplaying Jerry Porter IMO.

I really looked forward to him developing into a quality NFL (and fantasy) WR, but now it seems he's fighting just to get on the field.

What's the prognosis for this guy? Prior to his injuries, I thought he was significantly more talented than Doug Gabriel and was rapidly closing in on Porter. Any Oakland homers knowledgable on his rehab and/or Art Shell's plans on using Curry should he regain his prior form?

My KFFL search yielded this tidbit:

Raiders | Curry rehabbing quicklyTue, 2 May 2006 12:36:56 -0700The Contra Costa Times reports Oakland Raiders WR Ronald Curry (Achilles) is making strong progress in his rehabilitation program. This is the second offseason in a row Curry has had to rehab his Achilles' tendon. "He's further (along) now than when he hurt the thing before," head coach Art Shell said. "He's doing much better. So the report that I've gotten from Rod Martin, the trainer, is that all of our guys are coming along very well. By the time we get to training camp, we expect everybody to be at full speed."

Taking this to be a positive sign. Per KFFL

Raiders | Curry participates in basketball gameSat, 24 Jun 2006 05:57:05 -0700Jason Jones, of the Sacramento Bee, reports Oakland Raiders WR Ronald Curry (Achilles' tendon) recently participated in the team's charity basketball game against the San Francisco 49ers. Curry has suffered injuries in the team's last two seasons. A healthy Curry could help an offense in which RB LaMont Jordan caught more passes (70) than every wide receiver except WR Jerry Porter (76).
BTW: Derrick Hamilton also played for the 49ers side.

Curry was on my radar the last 2 years, and I had almost forgotten about him until this post - thanks!

Isn't this guy playing behind Moss and Porter?? I think he has the same NFL outlook as me.

Sure, but he's the same guy who looked to have outplayed Porter before his last injury.

Behind Moss yes, Porter might not be such a lock.Porter is not endearing himself to Art Shell in the least. After Shell got the HC job he individual meetings with several players, including Porter. The meeting went so poorly with Porter that Porter reportedly stormed out of the meeting when Shell told him what his expectations were. Since that time I've read Porters partcipation on the OTA's has been among the worst if not the worst on team. I'll try to see if I can locate were I read this and post it, I just know it was in a Bay area newspaper.

Here is what I read about the Porter and Shell meeting in a Contra Costa Times Q&A with the Raider beat writer:QI RECENTLY READ THAT ART SHELL THREW JERRY PORTER OUT OF HIS OFFICE DURING A MEETING OF THE TWO. CAN YOU SHED ANY LIGHT ON WHAT THIS WAS ABOUT? COULD HE POSSIBLY HAVE WANTED MR. PORTER TO PRODUCE ON A CONSISTENT BASIS AND BECOME A TEAM PLAYER? THANKS.

RAIDERS#13, CASTLEWOOD, VA 5/12/06

ARaiders#13, I am the writer who reported that incident. Yes, Art Shell threw wide receiver Jerry Porter out of his office after a get-to-know-you meeting turned confrontational. Porter doesn't take criticism too well and despises being told what to do. However, he soon learned that he won't be able to push around Shell the way he and others did Bill Callahan and Norv Turner. Shell told Porter what he expects from him and how things are going to be around Raidersland now that he is in charge. Porter's options are to conform or risk being traded. Porter looked great at minicamp and appears on board for now. However, he is prone to sulking and grumbling if he feels as if he isn't getting enough passes thrown his way. So, Shell likely will have to get on Porter from time to time and make him realize that he isn't bigger than the team. Take care. Sincerely, Steve.
