It never gets talked about but I think most fans underestimate how little a lot of players know about football. A lot of them are in their little positional bubble where they spend all of their time on the specifics of their position and know very little about the broader game theory, even the basics, that coaches don't explicitly explain to them before the play.

I'm friends with an ex Alabama offensive lineman and watching football with him is so weird. Things like letting the other team score or time management or plays like this one he just has no idea about, but he could give an hour long TED talk about how how a pre-snap defensive shift affects blocking assignments.
