The Miami Dolphins today placed safety Yeremiah Bell on injured reserve and waived defensive end Akbar Gbaja-Biamila, the team announced.

To fill the vacancies, the Dolphins signed free agent safeties Donovin Darius and Lamont Thompson. In addition, the team signed linebacker Kelvin Smith to its practice squad.

Bell suffered a ruptured left Achilles’ tendon in the Dolphins’ game last Sunday at Washington. He was coming off a 2006 season in which he started the final eight games and finished with 65 tackles, two sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and a team-high 12 passes defensed.

Thoughts on this move? Does either move into a starting role and have viable IDP value?

I actually still have Darius on one roster where I just couldn't absorb the cost of cutting him right now, so hoping he might work out.

bump...

i have Bell on my team and would like a cheap/sneaky play here.

my gut: i would think that neither guy is an immediate start. they have to learn the system after all. they would have a shot at starting in 3-4 weeks.

Thompson is a poor fit here, given that the Dolphin safeties are used in coverage frequently.

Darius could have some future value in deep leagues, but I don't think he's a good enough all-around player at this stage of his career to be the exception to the shaky IDP value the Miami safeties have had over the past three seasons in the Saban/Capers system.

Remember, Yeremiah Bell made only 32 solos over nine games. What fantasy value he had was generated by his big play ability. Otherwise, he'd have been just another guy (proj 57 solos) last year in most IDP leagues.

So you're saying I shouldn't even bother trying to keep him on my roster? :lmao:
If the cost of cutting him is high, you can certainly hold him and see what happens. He'll probably beat Thompson out for a starter's spot if either is fighting for it. Given that, he may be useful bye week filler, since he's on your roster already. If he plays well, you might get to releive yourself of him by tossing him in a deal.
