Miami to go defense? (1 Viewer)

(KFFL) Jeff Darlington, of The Miami Herald, reports Miami Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland may have given some insight on who the Dolphins will select with the first overall selection in the 2008 NFL Draft, or at least what side of the ball their draft selection is going to be playing on. When asked in an interview whether the team would draft someone with more upside than accomplishments Ireland responded with, "Of course I want guys who have great upside, this is the first pick in the draft," Ireland said. "This guy is going to be, you hope he's a pillar of your defense for a long time. Of course you hope he's going to have upside. The economics to me."

Gholston, Long or Dorsey? Or subterfuge?

Oops. I'm sure we'll read a lot of spin on this but Ireland messed up. I'm of the opinion that they are not going to select either Long and the decision is coming down to Dorsey or Gholston.

I think they should select OT Jake Long but that doesn't seem like Parcells and now Ireland has helped clear it up a bit for us. Welcome to Miami Dorsey!

I agree that this wasn't some kind of shark P.R. move, particularly because they have 1.01, they don't have to psych anyone else out of picking someone they covet. It will probably still come down to signability, but let's see if they open negotiations up to anyone besides Gholston and Long. Wow, if Gholston went 1.01, that would screw up a LOT of mocks, wouldn't it?

According to Schefter, Jake Long is the only player they've talked to.Dorsey?Chris Long?Honestly I think both are more worthy of the #1 than Gholston.

God only knows. Based on all the elements, with the presence of similar players in Taylor and Porter, I cant imagine he'd be speaking of either Long or Gholston. Imo, its Dorsey he'd be speaking of here.

I'm calling 'shenanigans' on the slip-up. it seems to me to be a ploy, no doubt about it.Miami knows exactly who they're taking. Parcells has already stated whomever they select will be signed before the draft even begins.they're using that slip-up to gain leverage for a possible trade out of the 1.01 position. They've also done this posturing to force Jake Long's hand into signing any contract they've potentially laid out for him, letting him mull over the fact that if he doesn't sign with Miami, he'll not only drop a few spots, but potentially lose millions of dollars in the process.

it's all a ploy to motivate Jake Long, IMO

x2... The first thing I thought of... to motivate Jake Long into signing for a little cheaper.. but more than he would make later in the draft.

He mentioned that he has people checking on academics, checking with the local police, etc. Chris Long is known to be a fairly squeaky clean guy. I don't think they would be that worried about those aspects of him. I think they are looking at Glenn Dorsey here with a slight possibility to Vernon Gholston. Call it a hunch, but I don't think their pick will be Chris Long. :2cents:

It's Gholston......as my final mock will indicate.......Parcells has been a part of drafting Lawrence Taylor and DeMarcus Ware.......so he knows the value of a (potential) frightening edge rusher.........The guy (Gholston) has too much upside and the Dolphins will not be able to resist........

I heard this on my way to work this morning on ESPN Radio, and the first thought that ran through my head was: "wow, imagine if it's Gholston?"... Miami saw what it took from NYG last year to beat NE in the Superbowl, and I am wondering if they are trying to use the same philosophy (b/c of their hatred for NE).

I don't think Gholston should be in the top 3 players drafted (just too inconsistent at OSU), but just a gut feeling that the Fins are going to take him.

They shocked everyone last yr by taking Ginn #9 overall, so I guess anything is possible..

All you need to do is go look at BP's draft history to learn that he almost always goes with defense. I believe you are looking at two offensive players with his 1st round picks, Bledsoe and the trade for CMart.

So let's just say it's Gholston. Most mocks have him going somewhere in the top 6-7. Could the talks between MIA and J. Long simply be an attempt to coax one of STL, ATL, OAK, BAL, NYJ to trade up? I don't really see it. STL is probably the only team looking at OL. MIA couldn't trade down any further and still get Gholston IMO, so I don't know what this is all about. Why negotiate with J. Long and not Gholston (as far as we know)?

Yes. I never for one minute believed Parcells would go OL in round 1. I also believe he hates having the first pick and the Jake Long negotiations were simply a tool for trading down.

I'm not sure how any defensive player not named "Dorsey" could be considered, and I think Gholston is going to be a beast.
