From rotoworld (the author evidently got mixed up between Michael Bush and Bennett Fracture):

Michael Bush-RB-Raiders Sep. 2 - 9:58 pm et Beat writer Jerry McDonald suggests Michael Bennett (thumb surgery) could miss "up to a quarter of the season or more."The Raiders aren't providing a timetable. McDonald, after consulting with an orthopedic surgeon, believes Bush is "highly unlikely" to be ready to play in the opener. The doctor advised that the 4-6 weeks would be a "best case scenario" for a return from "Bennett's fracture" surgery. As Bush is a running back, it's unlikely that he'll be able to play with a "club" over his hand. Darren McFadden will enter the season as the starter with Michael Bennett as the backup.

Here is the actual article that was referenced...

Expect Bush to be out awhile

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010 at 6:48 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Note: I’ll be involved with a live chat during the course of the game and will post a wrapup later this evening.

Based on what information is available regarding the fractured thumb of running back Michael Bush, it’s highly unlikely he’d be ready to play in the opener and could miss up to a quarter of the season or more.

Bush broke his thumb on his last carry when 49ers safety Michael Lewis hit him with his helmet, with coach Tom Cable saying it was fractured following the game and saying Monday “he’ll need a procedure on it, and whether that keeps him out or not remains to be seen.”

On his Twitter account, Bush said it was a “Bennett fracture” and even showed pictures of himself before surgery.

Cable has since declined to discuss the injury and wouldn’t confirm the surgery had taken place.

According to Dr. Michael Schwartz, an orthopedic surgeon based in New York who is the team doctor for Hofstra University and has served in that capacity for the New Jersey Dragons of the Arena Football League and the New York Islanders of the NHL, a time span of four to six weeks following surgery would be a “best case scenario,” conceding he was speaking in general terms and did not know the specifics of Bush’s injury.

Schwartz said surgery for a “Bennett’s fracture” would normally entail have screws inserted into the bone to speed the healing process, and theye’d be left in once it healed and the player returned to action. The fracture as it the base of the first metacarpal bone where “it articulates with the bones in the wrist.”

If Bush were to be out four weeks from the time of surgery, he would be available to practice for the in the days preceding the Houston Texans game on Oct. 3 in Week 4.

Six weeks would mean Bush could be ready to face the 49ers on On Oct. 6 in Week 6.

Schwartz said that in the case of a lineman or linebacker, the injured player could be fitted with a “club” and be back in two to three weeks.

Bush’s health will affect how the Raiders approach their final cutdown, which takes place Saturday. They are more likely to keep both Rock Cartwright and Michael Bush, rather than releasing one of them, to provide depth behind Darren McFadden.

The Raiders also could be on the lookout for running backs released by other teams (Justin Fargas, anyone?).

So is McFadden the feature back for the first four games? Is he worth treating as a RB2 for the next month?
I would say so definitely in PPR leagues. They don't really have anyone else on that roster that could help share carries to where it would be a 50/50 split.

Nothing new here really...just the original 4-6 week timetable being reworded as "could miss 1/4 of the season or more"?

That is one inaccurate post...

Michael Bush described his thumb injury Tuesday, calling it a "Bennett fracture" and detailing his surgery.

The surgery inserted screws in Bush's left thumb, done to align bone fragments. He did not give a timetable for return. Bush could presumably carry the ball only with his right hand, though the Raiders' coaching staff may balk at that idea since Bush is a southpaw. His status for Week 1 is unknown.

Raiders coach Tom Cable isn't ruling out Michael Bush (thumb) or Jason Campbell (wrist, stinger) for the season opener.

Cable did reveal Sunday that Bush needs a "procedure" on his fractured thumb, but he will not need a cast. He may be able to practice and play with extra padding on his left hand. Campbell has a right wrist injury that Cable called more of a concern than his stinger, but the Raiders are confident he'll be back in two weeks. Oakland opens at Tennessee on September 12.

Michael Bush will see a hand specialist on Sunday after breaking his thumb in Saturday's game against the 49ers.

Coach Tom Cable refused to name a timetable on Bush's return until after he sees the specialist. Bush had to get a teammate to help tie his shoes after the game, so it wouldn't be a surprise if he ends up missing regular season action with the injury. Darren McFadden may now have an opening for the Week 1 starting job.

That's not how I remember it, I thought the timetable was he had a shot at playing in the season opener (albeit with a cast) which was not 4-6 weeks from the date of the injury. I won't swear by this, but that was my impression of the news reports.

I'm talking the realistic timetable we've all been aware of resulting from a Bennett surgery, NOT statements from Tom Cable

Phil doesn't think McFadden is all that special. He gets a bump in value until the games start. Phil thinks you should sell McFadden while you still can.

I agree with Phil. But like I have said all along - who else are you going to draft with this much upside in round 10? (ADP is 10.02).

Draft him and then trade him once he gets the starting gig and has a nice game to someone who is hungry for a starting RB.

whodeywhodey,

Phil just wants to thank you for the information in this thread. Don't let the haters keep you down. Phil thinks the Shark Pool needs more people sharing information when they find it. Big thanks.

I've never followed McFadden at all but drafted him around the 11th. I'm looking forward to seeing a good amount of him now. 1/4 of the season would be dreamy for McFadden owners to at least find out what we have... I hope Campbell is healthy as well so that we can see the OAK offense fully in effect (whatever that will mean post Jamarcus).

Good luck with that. It would take at least 3 100+ yard games to rehabilitate McFadden's fantasy football image enough to move him for the equivalent of a 6th rounder. And if he starts off the season that strong .. wouldn't you rather just keep riding him to see how it turns out?

someone in my leage just dropped M Bush; I have Jerome Harrison and Anthony Dixon on my bench so should I pick up Bush? What the hell is a Bennett fracture i thought he was refering to Michael Bennett?
