Michael Clayton? (1 Viewer)

If Favre goes to the Bucs how does that affect the value of Clayton? Word out of camp is that he is rededicated, in good shape, and that this is a make-or-break year for him. Galloway and Hilliard are both old. Clayton did have one great season. Outside chance of being a stud?

Hilliard is currently starting with Galloway, BUT

WR Clayton resurgent in Bucs camp

Aug. 2, 2008

There is a high level of competition for reps among the Bucs’ receiving corps, with spots on the depth chart up for grabs behind Joey Galloway, but Michael Clayton may have an early edge on reclaiming a large role in the offense. “What I’ve seen is five or six consecutive days where (Clayton has) put his fist down and said, ‘I’m a go-to receiver,’ ” head coach Jon Gruden recently said. “If he continues to do that, he’s going to be a big part of this offense again. … He’s focused, he’s all business and he’s running all kinds of routes. He’s running inside routes, outside routes, and he’s showing very good stamina. And we know he can run with the ball after the catch. So we like what he’s doing, but we’ve got a long way to go.” Clayton has fallen off track after his historic rookie year of 2004 in Tampa. He’s caught just one touchdown in the last three seasons after having recorded seven as a rookie, but he may be on the verge of regaining Gruden’s confidence.

I think he has a shot... simply because of the good things I've been hearing about him. That said, not really worth rostering as more than an extremely late flier in large roster leagues.

This is a REAL stretch.
Ignore this person. That's how you miss out on incredible sleeper values.Yes, Clayton has picked up his game, is in better shape and is not dealing with the nagging injuries of the past.I think Clayton or Bryant will start opposite Galloway with Hilliard in the slot. My gut tells me Clayton will be the guy, and I've picked him up in some leagues. I had picked up Bryant in some leagues previously, but I now think Clayton will be the guy. If Favre is throwing the rock, there will be value.

Nagging injuries are part of the game. 22 rec in 0733 rec in 0632 rec in 05This looks like a trend. Not to mention 1 TD in three years. A lot of players look good in training camp.

80/1193/7 in 2004. And he's 25 years old. We know he has done it. We don't know if he will again. Right now the circumstances look like they may be there for him to re-emerge. To me, it's worth finding out. All he costs is a spot on the end of my bench during the preseason and if he ends up the starter with Favre starting, he'll get his numbers.

Nobody is saying draft the guy in the 5th round. For a guy that has an ADP in the late teens or early 20's, if he's drafted at all, there's value there as a late or last round flier, even if Favre doesn't end up in TB. In larger, PPR leagues, Hilliard was a decent WR3 for a good portion of the season last year. With a better size/skill ratio, Clayton could perform to that level, and can be had at the price of WR6 or WR7.

I live outside of Tampa and Clayton is almost all but done. Not to mention the Bucs have one of the least explosive offenses. They threw 18 & 15 TD passes each of the last two years. I rather take my flyer on guy like Patrick Crayton on a team that will throw 28-38 TD's this season (or save the roster spot for a handcuff).

I think Favre is a better quarterback than Garcia, but I like Garcia's mobility. Even though both are in their late 30's, Garcia is much better at getting some yards with his feet, and Favre has a better arm. Favre took the Packers to the playoffs last year, but so did Garcia with the Bucs. Garcia also led Philly to the playoffs the year before that. Garcia knows the Bucs system very well. Is Favre really that much of an upgrade for the Bucs?

Seems like about a 50/50 response. That's good enough for me to stash him on the end of my bench as a possible #3 WR (we only start 2 WR and I have Chad and Welker).

What are the odds they throw 15 or even 18 with Favre lining up under Faine?

I went through all my dynasty leagues checking to see if either Clayton or Bryant were on the waiver wire with the recent Favre talk. He will give a big bump to some WR wherever he ends up.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I do not think the Tampa QB has been affecting Clayton stats.
Not saying they did. But Brett Favre being the QB in TB will affect someones stats. It might be Clayton, it might not be. But if I can pick him or Bryant up for next to nothing for that chance then I'm going to do it. 53 man rosters give you alot of room to store a possible sleeper.

Who has him in the Hyper leagues?http://forums.footballguys.com/forum/index...t&p=8987835

His hype will rise once Favre signs, believe that.

incredible sleeper BHAAAHAAH. You gotta be joking. And you’re lecturing him on finding sleepers. You’re a guppy. 2004? Did we even have internet back then? Was that before or after the A bomb? Just be sure to grab Holmes also, he has a decent shot to get more TDs then Clayton. 1 td in 3 years. And he's been starting. *lol* One hit wonder? How many suckers will burn roster spots on Clayton, for the 4th year in a row. It's hilarious. Better get Chris Perry too. Start Perry and Clayton week 1. Shock the world. INCREDIBLE SLEEPER. *lol* What a joke. How can he be a sleeper for 3 years in a row, and never pan out. That's not a sleeper. That's a bad NFL WR. Go grab Lelie too. Didn't he lead the league in YPC one year? Best deep threats in the league?People did the same thing with Peerless Price. Peerless Price thinks the Clayton hype is funny. Price had 1 good year, EVER. Done. Once. It happens, all the time. Clayton wouldn't start for ANY team in the league, except maybe the Bucs. Mainly because their #1 WR is 44 years old. Clayton is just so awful. I get a lot of Buc games, its brutal. He was flat out benched, but being utter garbage. You could get a killer team of sleepers, Charles Rodgers, Mike Williams, Clayton, Chris Perry, Lelie. OMFG the talent. INCREDIBLE sleepers indeed.I love playing in leagues with hardcore FF nerds. You can pawn off all sorts of trash with fluff offseason pieces. I always grab Perry, Mike Williams, Clayton at the end of the year. Because I know in the spring, I can package them in a deal touting upside, sleeper, possible starter. And you'll always find one sucker ready to bite. It's awesome. Waste o roster spot. Zero upside. Go grab a rookie who kills his 1st preseason game. He has upside. Clayton is a known entity. An awful WR.

Now that you've called me a guppy and a FF nerd, is there anything else you'd like to add or do you have all the insults out of the way? That's how you disagree with someone like an adult. Good job.

Funny thing is, I've read lots and lots of your posts and it's really amazing how little you understand. But let's not let that get in the way. EBF, Team Legacy, Couch Potato, and others in this thread apparently deserve ridicule for taking this position on Clayton. Nice.

Seriously, man, tone it down big time. All Couch Potato was saying that it's worth grabbing Clayton extremely late as a flier. I happen to agree wholeheartedly, and regardless of whether you agree or not, it's pretty bad form to resort to sophomoric name-calling.

Better add me to the Guppy list. I drafted Clayton in both survivor pools that I did recently in the 22nd round(last) of the O one and moved up and took him in the 27th round of the IDP one to make sure I got him as my WR7.

Out of his stats last year he ended the season with 13 for 170 in hte last 3 weeks. Not great numbers but certainly respectable. I watched a couple of the games on TV and he was starting to get his swagger back. Add in the fact thateruden has had good things to say about him and he is healthy again for the first time in a while and he is more than worthy of these late round pickups. Even in dynasty at only 25, there is room. If he does not work out, than what did you lose but the chance of him succeeding is good this year still.

Bring in Brett and things start to look promising. Brett has taken some okay WR's and made them look good over the years. Clayton has talent by his rookie campaign and bring in a great passing QB and the formula for success rises. Some guys have missed out on the chance here.

I did attempt to get him in my 24 team dynasty league with offering up Ahmad Bradshaw(who was going 7th round of a few dynasty drafts that was happening back in May) for Brandon Jackson and Micheal Clayton and got shot down. So I guess I am not the only one who still sees value there unfortunately.

Favre only makes superstars out of nobodys like Antonio Freeman, Bill Schroeder(brief time), Robert Ferguson, Donald Driver, Greg Jennings...Clayton's stock would sure be better than undrafted which is what happens in most leagues. At least he has shown that he can hit the numbers when the planets line up right...I think it is very short sighted if Favre signs in TB to not think about the WR2 and WR3 slot on this team.

And the TE position sure would get interesting.

If Favre goes to the Bucs how does that affect the value of Clayton? Word out of camp is that he is rededicated, in good shape, and that this is a make-or-break year for him. Galloway and Hilliard are both old. Clayton did have one great season. Outside chance of being a stud?
Favre going to Tampa would affect Earnest Graham the most, because defenses will play back trying to defend against the pass..I'd bump up EG in my RB rankings as a result.

I'm as done with Clayton as I am with Boston. I got a good chuckle at the Boston hype for the last two or three years, and I'm glad I have a replacement source of amusement in Clayton this year.

In that same vein, I will say about Clayton I said about Boston last year (and the year before). Just because he can be had for basically "nothing" - there IS a cost for him. It's opportunity cost. Roster spots are valuable, and if you have a Boston/Clayton on your roster, that's one less shot at a Colston/Derek Anderson/Willie Parker/Gates (tried to pick one of every flavor who at one time was a shot in the dark).

I'm also not convinced that if Favre gets to Tampa, he'll be any better than Garcia was. For what it's worth.

I agree the "guppie" post was in poor taste though. No reason to go there. The Clayton thing is FAR from the dumbest idea CP has come up with. :kicksrock:

It's funny to me how people will give some players a chance to turn it around and not others. I've been a huge fan of the bucs for some time now and have particularly had my eye on Clayton. He's had a bad attitude the past few years and has been out of shape/injured on regular occasion. I feel that his early success went to his head and messed him up. I think now the coaching staff has given him a wake up call and said this is his make-or-break year. It seems that that might have actually got through to him and he has rededicated himself, getting in shape, increasing his work ethic and bettering his attitude. Bring in a gunslinger like Favre who could develop a new relationship with Clayton and given Clayton's age, health, and revised commitment there is at the very least the potential for a homerun there. Yes, it costs you a roster spot at the end of the bench, but if no one else on the waivers looks appealing, why not take a shot at this?

Clayton had a great rookie year, I'll give him that. But he has done absolutely nothing for three years and the chances of him amounting to anything is slim. I'll use my late round picks on players that I believe have real upside. I just don't see it with Clayton.

Simply a matter of where you want to take your shots. For me, there's almost always some young player who HASN'T been given a chance yet (or has been given fewer chances than Clayton) I'd rather have than a guy who hasn't done anything in years despite several chances. Again, very similar to Boston. All we heard last pre-season (and the one before that) coming from Bucs camp (and Gruden) was about how Boston was astounding everybody and he had really turned his life around. So guys were clamoring to grab him and "stash him" for "nothing" at the "end of their bench". Problem is, they were using a slot that COULD have been filled with a guy like Derek Anderson.I'm not saying Clayton couldn't turn it around. He could. Things like that have happened before. But for ME, I like the odds better for a different kind of flyer.

You wouldn't be taking a "flier" on a guy like Patrick Crayton - his ADP is significantly higher than Clayton's - he is being drafted in every league, Clayton is not. Crayton is expected to be a decent #3/4 fantasy WR, Michael Clayton is completely off the grid and would likely cost you a last round pick, much less than Crayton would cost.

Clayton is a great Deep sleeper option..most people have moved on and labeled the guy a bust.....well he may be a bust but even without Favre if he is healthy he could be productive

I think Stovall has more upside with Favre. He has been stretching the field in TC.

Clayton has been looking very good as well, and I currently own both guys in multiple leagues. Paris Warren / Antonio are worth keeping on the radar.

I feel the same way. The two most talented (and not old) WR's on this team are Bryant and MC. In one very deep keeper I have these guys on my roster but other than that I'm not holding my breath...But I just can't see either Galloway or Hilliard being the guys for 16 games. Didn't these guys just get their AARP cards?

I live outside of Tampa and Clayton is almost all but done. Not to mention the Bucs have one of the least explosive offenses. They threw 18 & 15 TD passes each of the last two years. I rather take my flyer on guy like Patrick Crayton on a team that will throw 28-38 TD's this season (or save the roster spot for a handcuff).
Patrick Crayton isn't consider a flyer, he's a 9th or 10th round pick. We're talking about a last round pick, something along those lines.

Clayton and Bryant are both good guys to stash in deep head-to-head redraft leagues. Galloway is old and he's nursing an injury. Both of the young bucks have shown in the past that they have the talent to capitalize on an opportunity. This is definitely a situation that could yield a surprise 1,000 yard receiver this season.
What about Stovall?
I like Stoval. But I don't believe he has done it over an entire season the way these two have. He could emerge as the guy there.
