Michael Turner (2 Viewers)

No word yet on Turner's tender, but this beat writer is pegging the Broncos as a very interested party. No surprise, but worth mentioning.

Some comments by AJ Smith from this past weekend per the article:

"It's a question of what do we do?" Chargers general manager A.J. Smith said during the weekend at the scouting combine in Indianapolis. "But we have to work our way through the three different levels of it. . . . And how it's going to play out right now, I don't know. But he's quite obviously a terrific player." ...

At the same time, San Diego will be one of the Super Bowl favorites, and "in case of a major injury, it's a comforting feeling to know if anything should happen, what you're going to do coming in," Smith said...

"The general consensus is that, if you have a one and a three, they're untouchable," Smith said. "And, for the most part, it's totally correct. But sometimes, it's a rare player where an organization might go, 'Whoa.' It's a steep price but . . .' And he might be in that unique category, not for a lot of clubs, but it only takes one to say, 'Boy it's interesting.' "
SD wont trade him to the Broncos. I think he's a bolt unitl 2008
If the Broncos are willing to give up a first and third, the Chargers won't have a choice. (The right to match doesn't mean anything in the poison pill era.)
IIRC, The NFL took steps to make sure the loop hole of the poison pill has been removed from these kind of contracts.

when was the last time Denver spent a first on a RB? Nevermind a first and a third, and a mega contract. I think SD will tender him at that 1st and 3rd simply to force Denver's hand. If they do a first, Denver might bite on it and then SD would face Turner twice a year.
They haven't in a long, long time, having drafted Portis in the 2nd. That said, the whole notion of plug-and-play in that system may be a thing of the past in Shanny's eyes. It's still unlikely they'll cough up that much coin/picks for Turner, but if the Broncos really want to make a move on one of their archrivals, you never know...

Good point, but I doubt Denver gives up that for a runner. Especially their (denver) track record finding anyone to fill the role
This is the same team that wasted a third round on some Ohio ST. RB

Nope. The NFL unofficially frowns on the practice, but there's nothing they can do about it. The owners can't unilaterally amend the CBA without the consent of the players' union, and that ain't happening. The league can't even be caught unofficially frowning or it's an anti-trust violation, so the unofficial frowns have to be kept secret.

I would think they could get Betts or TJones cheaper than Turner.

Cheaper but not better.
