Michael Turner (1 Viewer)

Take away Turner's "long" run yesterday (12 whole yards) and he got 53 yards on 16 carries... a whopping 3.3 ypc.If you wanna see what a real runningback looks like, take a look on the other sideline at Laurence Maroney.
The "why it's dumb to take out the long run" post in 5.....4.....3.....2.....1......
Naw, this is where we take out all but the best run. Turner averaged 12 yards a carry. Yes, that's a dumb thing to do too.

And those people are idiots who don't understand fundamentals of statistics. And no, the Broncos don't want him... we need linemen, both sides.

It's not dumb. I do this for all the sports. For example, baseball. A lot of people think Alex Rodriguez had a really good 2007 season, but if you take away his best at-bat in every game, he only had 8 home runs. Obviously he's way overrated.

You should talk to the Maroney owner in my league about this first-round stud.Oh, and let us know when he puts together a 1000 yard season (you can even throw in receiving yards if you want) . . .

Thanks Mike Shanahan. As a Broncos fan, I hope they do sign him and address other needs in the draft such as safety, defensive tackle and offensive line. But hey, Shanny just told us he isn't interested :lmao:

yeah, i was really disappointed in turner's play as well. After this season I doubt he gets that huge contract like many including myself thought he would get. Not only has he declined... it almost seems as if sproles outshined him this year as L.T's back up. I was hoping the Giants got him during the last off-season because i heard their name mentioned a few times... now im glad we didn't... i am more then content with big brando and ahmad bradshaw.. derrick ward ain't to shabby either... we just produce running back stud's i swear lol.

I LOVE this thread!! Keep beating his fantasy value down PLEASE!!!!!!! Turner to da Bears and

Is it insane to actually think the Chargers might try and re-sign him? I think the last 2 weeks they got a look at life without LT and Sproles may not be a long term answer. Or do they just target someone in the draft and hope they can fillin as a #3 or possible #2?
He could easily be back. It depends on the offers he gets and how much he likes SD vs. being a starter. I'm sure the Chargers will offer him a contract but they'll be hard-pressed to match the bonus another team will offer.

We know that some team is going to throw plenty of $$$$ Turner's way. I'm just thankful my team isn't likely to be it.
We do? This is the worst year possible for Turner to be a free agent. He's competing with 8-10 very good rookie RB where many of them will be much cheaper to sign.

I agree Turner was IMO "running safe" Meaning as soon as he was near contact he just wrapped the ball up tight with both arms and put his head down. Li ek he would rather grind out 3 or 4 yards than try to break a big one. I agree with that style of running for that game with so much on the line.We all know he has the breakaway speed and he has the size.I do think it is going to be harder than once thought for him to get full feature role not because of the 2 playoffs games but with the class of RB's coming out. I am a LT2, Marion Barber and Julis Jones and Turner owner in a keeper league. I have been holding onto Turner for 2 season waiting for this year. I DEF dont want to see him go to Dallas, that just puts me in the same situation I have been in before. I want to see him go to a team like the Texans or Raiders. With this class coming out I still thinnk he has a good chance of landing a feature role just not as good as before. He is battle tested vs NFL level players. Remember just cause this class is deep not all of the RB's are going to amount to anything.

I think Turner looked in great shape. The guys I was watching the game with and I had a conversation about it. It looks like he's in the best shape he has been in since he arrived in San Diego, I would guess that he's lost about 10 lbs of fat. I think he took what the defense gave him and didn't really make any crucial mistakes. One thing is certain, whoever acquires him cannot count on him catching any passes out of the backfield. I'd say he could be a top 20 RB in non-PPR leagues and probaly a top 30 in PPR leagues for the next couple years assuming he finds a job where he has a decent role which he likely will. I think he would be a great fit in Houston were Darius Walker could take care of the passing stuff...

Why exactly would teams want to waste a draft pick on a RB when they can sign a guy like Turner is FA? Do you understand the amount of cap space that teams are going to have going into the offseason?

Teams aren't going to be looking to save money, and most teams look to find answers in FA so they don't have to find answers in the draft.

From Don Banks: How much better did the call by Chargers general manager A.J. Smith not to trade backup running back Michael Turner last offseason look on Sunday? Just imagine where San Diego would have been against New England with L.T. sidelined and no insurance policy to turn to in Turner (65 yards rushing on 17 carries)?

Look for Turner to be among the most coveted unrestricted free agents in the league come March.

From Peter King who questioned Turner's play last week: Now that's the way to run the ball, Michael Turner.

Clearly, many thought Turner looked pretty good during the playoffs and it's clear that he will be a top FA in the offseason.

Good thing SD didn't trade Turner for that 1st rd draft pick last year. With LT out, who else would they have used at RB to lose to the Patriots?Genius.
Turner helped them during the season and sure helped them get to the Championship game. Every team needs two capable RBs.

I know this is a what have ya done for me lately league...but remember there is a reason why we were high on him in the first place. He played against the 2 best teams in the league, and still did some what decent, even LT started of this year slow, but we expect him (Turner) to be perform better the LT even did in the game against Tennessee (Which BTW LT only had 42 yards). He's a stud we know it, now lets stop being the wannabe media and making stupid stories out of nuthin!!

Easy when your three stars are not 100%.SD DEF did their job...kept NE to 21 points. Offense did not have their playmakers.
I love comments where people like to add points to TEAM A while COMPLETELY leaving the outcome of TEAM B alone. If the Chargers scored on one of their drives, the Pats would not have simply pulled the plug on trying to score. So if people want to give the Chargers another TD, make sure you give the Patriots another one too, as the way they were moving the ball mythodically down the field at the end of the game I don't see why they would not have been able to score in that situation. In that case, that would make the final 28-16 Pats.

Well as I see it there are more than one reason that most of us are high on Turner.1) Career 5.5 yards per carry

2) he can take it to the house from anywhere on the field

3) he is very hard to bring down(gets a lot of yards after contact

Turner has awesome balance in the hole. He can make guys miss and still keep his forward momentum going and always falls forward for positive yards.

Aside from that 3rd and 1 where Seau got him for a loss, he converted every down and short play with relative ease.

He may be a more explosive version of Rudi Johnson, wheer Rudi got caught from behind Turner takes those 20 yarders to the house.

FWIW, I have seen some media folks suggesting that Turner may not be done in SD and that the Bolts may try to res-sign him or ever franchise him. I personally don't see them breaking the bank to keep him since they are already shelling out big money for LT, Rivers, and Chambers . . . but stranger things have happened.

lol, that clip is funny. Of all the "hilite" clips, 3 of them were vs. Buff in the end of the 4th qtr. Another was vs. Tenn in another blowout late in the 4th qtr. This is my problem with Turner. He has oftentimes come into the game in the 4th qtr once it's already out of hand, the defense is tired and surrendered a lot of points and mostly just want to get off the field. I'm not saying that he doesn't look good running the ball as I haven't watched him for the majority of his carries in the last 4 years. He does look good and definitely has good speed, but there isn't anything that just jumps out about him. It's also another thing to do this vs tired defenses late in a game with limited touches and to do it for a full game, week after week, against strong defenses. While these last 2 games are a limited sample size, and he did "ok", he didn't do anything special, didn't break any long runs, didn't get in the endzone, and essentially wasn't a game changer like LT is.

To think he's just going to come and be a stud after his limited work in the last 4 seasons is just a little premature for me. The guy has 228 CAREER carries over 4 yrs. That's not even a full load for one season. Just color me a little skeptical that he will instantly become a top 10 RB wherever he goes. We've seen many a backup/COP RB have a high YPC in a limited role. Add in the fact he plays on one of the better offenses in the league and I just don't see him as the lock to produce at a high rate with the feature role that others do. I may very well be wrong, but I just don't buy it yet.

You're wrong about this. The stats support he runs just as well and often in all quarters. I don't remember who posted them but they were in one of the Turner threads and have been discussed before.

It is what it is. The guy has been very productive when given the chance.....that is pretty much all you can ask.....I have no idea how good he will be as a feature back.....I think we will all find out the answer to that question in 2008.

No question about that. And since it's all based on what we think will happen, there's gonna be some that like him and some that don't. I'm not even saying that I think he will fail or that he isn't good, I just don't see him as in the Jesus-glow light that some people do. I definitely wouldn't come close to paying the price he's commanding in dynasty leagues. And, if I did own him in a league, he'd be a sell for me in a heartbeat if I could get the value that some are paying. But, bottomline, he has all done all you can ask for in his limited work. We shall see.

I'm not saying he doesn't run well in all quarters, but the majority of his carries have been in the 4th qtr.2007--56 carries in 4th qtr (50%), 30 carries in 3rd qtr (26%), 18 in 2nd qtr, 10 in 1st qtr---also note that he started the last 2 games so his 1st and 2nd qtr carries were increased.

2006--36 carries in 4th qtr (43%), 19 in 3rd qtr, 18 in 2nd qtr, 10 in 1st qtr

2005--32 carries in 4th qtr (56%), 11 in 3rd qtr, 12 in 2nd qtr, 2 in 1st qtr

2004--11 carries in 4th qtr (55%), 3 in 3rd qtr, 2 in 2nd qtr, 4 in 1st qtr

For his career, 50% of his carries have come in the 4th qtr. So what I stated above is not "wrong". I didn't make the claim that he didn't run well in other qtrs, simply that the majority of his work has come late in games, mostly the 3rd and esp. the 4th qtrs when games are out of hand and defenses are tired. That's all.

Again, some of his #'s are indeed impressive. Others aren't. I haven't watched the majority of his games so I could indeed just be missing something. But, from what I have seen combined with his so far limited workload, I don't have the utmost confidence he's gonna be a stud. I may very well be wrong.

It's true that the majority of carries have come in the 4th, but he has been just as effective in quarters 1, 2, and 3. Here's the stats according to Data Dominator:1st, 2nd, and 3rd quarters combined: 111 carries for 607 yards = 5.47 yds/carry

4th quarter: 117 carries for 650 yards = 5.56 yds/carry

You cannot be serious. New England outclassed San Diego in every phase of the game except, perhaps, field goal kicking.
And yet they only beat a badly wounded San Diego team by 9 at home. I wouldn't go so far to say the Charger would have won with a healthy LT, Antonio Gates and Phillip Rivers but it couldn't have hurt either.
i think the Colts would've really had the Pats up against the ropes. if the Pats allowed the Colts that many trips in the red-zone, im pretty sure Manning would've come out w/ atleast 2 TDs.

i think the Colts would've really had the Pats up against the ropes. if the Pats allowed the Colts that many trips in the red-zone, im pretty sure Manning would've come out w/ atleast 2 TDs.
Unfortunately, the Colts D would have given up at least 30 . . .

It'd be great for Turner to remain a Charger, but he's said multiple times he wants to start. He's already referred to Sunday as his last game as a Charger. Unless there is no demand from any team that will use him in a starting role, he will be somewhere else next season. And I think he'll do a fine job.

Good thing SD didn't trade Turner for that 1st rd draft pick last year. With LT out, who else would they have used at RB to lose to the Patriots?Genius.
Actually, this is a pretty poor way to think of it.Had turner got traded, (to Tenn) they are the ones that offered the 1st round pick. Tennesse may have beaten them round 1 or worst, SD would have had to play Jacksonville round 1.So even though they loss to NE so big whipeedooda, they could have made another opponent stronger in the meantime and potentially went. Also, SD win against Tenn may have been different in the regular season potentially shifting momentum. Also, LT was limited during the regular season the fact that Turner was also hurt and wasn't the fill in is sheer bad luck, but logic was smart for SD to maintain Turner to aid the offense although in real terms nothing of benefit really came of it due to the circumstances.

Had Tomlinson played, he would have had a huge game and I think they probably win.

The problem with your argument David is that SD had 5 chances to score TDs, and didn't once. NE only had 3, and scored TDs on all three. SD really dominated that game, and had they turned those FGs into TDs, sure the game MY have been different, but it is more likely they would have won. More likely than assuming NE would get more trips into the red zone.It still likely would have been 21-20 in NE's favor IMO.

Maybe, maybe not. It's hard to say, but the Colts D had the personnel to stop the Pats, who knows if they would have executed properly or not.

No Freeney = no pass rush. Brady would have picked him apart.SD D >>>> Indy D.
