Ok, at the risk of this not being seen because people who
actually want info on Vick's contract are probably long gone by now... his contract is not really $100 million and his $40 mil isn't all "guaranteed".
I noticed a few posters throughout the thread that seemed to actually try to stay on topic so I figured I'd post this in case anyone finds it interesting.
Basically, ESPN has for some reason decided that "one hundred million" and "fourty million" are going to be their reported numbers. I guess you could say they rounded up
by a lot. Here are some highlights of the article that I link to after this post (if you don't want to read the entire article):
- $40 million in guaranteed money. You would think that "guaranteed" meant that it was actually guaranteed, right? No so fast. First off - it's $38.5 million - of which 3 million of that is a bonus he gets only
if the Eagles win the Super Bowl in 2011 or 2012. If you think that's a guarantee then I have Green Bay for you on line one. Along with about 3-5 other teams after that. So it's actually near 35 mil but for some reason ESPN reports it as $40 mil.
- There are
TONS of stipulations in his contract where he gains salary if he gets to the Champoinship Game or Super Bowls. This is pretty common in lots of contracts. One strange one in Vick's, though, is that some years his base salary decreases if he hasn't won a Super Bowl. It's looking like his contract is no where near it's max value unless he wins a Super Bowl. Pretty different from Manning's contract.
- Here's the part that I found most facinating - the last year of his deal (2016) goes totally away if in any year of his contract he plays more than 35% of his eligible time. If you're like me then you had to read that again to make sure you saw it correctly. That's right - if Vick plays at least 35% of his playtime this year, next year or any year in his deal then the last year of his contract just totally goes away.
That's $20 million pretty much guaranteed to be gone. In the article the writer says they put that last year on there just to make it hit the $100 million mark. That would seem to make the team, Vick and (more likely) his agent look good. I find this hilarious.
The writer goes on to say that Vick's yearly salary is below Manning and Brady. If they don't win the Super Bowl then it drops him down to middle of the road starter-QB money.
The
potential is there, though, for a nice 5 year/$81 million deal. I'm taking off that 6th year and $20 million. He'll hit 35% of his snaps at least one year.
Hope someone else finds this as interesting as I did. Lots of interesting details in this
