being a once in a lifetime quarterback.
If that's what you think you are dumber than the day is long. Add the moron that compared running over a cat to operating a dog fighting ring. I hope Philly eats the whole $100 million.
Being the only guy to ever run for 1000 yards as a QB in the many year history of the NFL sseems like its "once in a lifetime" to me...or maybe I'm just taking what he says for what he says and have no bitterness to twist it around...but thats just me.Your a canadian so I'll explain, do you understand that once you serve your punishment here in America you are allowed back into society? And that means your allowed to make money...I know its weird and hard to understand.Oh, so whos the dumb one now? However, The running over cat and dog fighting ring, yeah that cant be compared.
Bobby Douglas, former Chicago Bears QB, ran for 968 yards in only 14 games (not 16 games) in the 1972 season. I like Vick, he is a great athlete, but too call him a once in a lifetime quarterback is really a stretch.

What Vick did was terrible and for some folks unforgivable.
I think everyone gets that part. What I don't get is why some people believe that showing off their unwillingness to forgive/forget is some sort of badge of honor they need to wave. After awhile it looks more like a dunce hat.

Oh well, it gets them attention.
Has nothing to do with willingness or lack there of to forgive Vick its that people deserve 2nd chances, not free passes like their disgusting acts never happened.Spend less than two years in daycare, loses a large portion of his fortune. Come out of jail, welcomed with open arms into the Eagles organization, the fans immediately forgive him of all past indiscretions. Barely two years after that gets a contract after only one starting season that restores his fortune and status over night and guarantees he will live comfortably for the rest of his life.

The worst of it is the endorsements and the people that talk down to anyone that disagrees with them about Vick, you can have your barbaric opinions about animal cruelty but the laws exist because in a civil society this kind of treatment should never happen.
What kind of treatment?  The kind where a person is convicted, loses $$ and goes to jail, serves his time and then is sent back to society after he paid his debt?  I would love to see you, or anyone else, spend a month in any type of US prison where you can't do something as simple as piss or eat when you want and say it's daycare.  Jail is jail dude.  Any adult that can't do what they want to do when they want to do it is not "free".  No one would pick any jail over the freedom of not being locked up.  Try missing 18 months of your kids life and say it's nothing, or any loved one.  I'm sorry that 18 months of jail...even the softest one...is not sufficient enough for you.  Especially since some dudes can kill other PEOPLE and get less time. Our system says you get judged, serve your time and then you get released and branded a crimimal...and it's up to folks to decide if they want to give you a job or not.  Looks like society is doing just what the system is designed for it to do.  I'm sure Bill Gates would hire a felon who could make him tons of $$ if he thought he wouldn't make the same mistake, no matter what he did.  I mean, I could understand some griping if the guy got off but he actually went to prison.
You make it sound like he didnt go to jail because he committed a stupid disgusting felony.
No, I make it sound like he went to jail, paid his debt to society (as handed down by our criminal system) and is now a free man that still has the right to work for whoever will hire him. That's the way the system and society is supposed to work. You make it seem like you want a person to continue to be punished after they've served their time. That's exactly how the system and society isn't supposed to be.

Exactly. But some people are just too "moral" and "ethical" to allow that to happen without severe gnashing of teeth.

AdamSchefter Adam SchefterThe guaranteed money on Michael Vick's brand-spanking-new, 6-year, $100 million contract is about $40 million.
How to make it in America: kill dogs, get $100 million
Exactly.Oh and to all the "paid his dues" idiots, the only reason he did is because he got caught, period ...
So? He still paid 'em. I don't want him on my team but get over it. He paid, he worked hard and has been working with the ASPCA and he won't be doing it again, he earned another contract. Ridiculous to keep bringing it up like he's cheating America or doesn't deserve it.
I would have Roman Polanski on my team if he averaged me 14 points a game.

It amazes me that we see more complaints about Vick's involvement with the mistreatment of animals than we do about the NFL players out there assaulting other humans. If you want to talk about Vick, talk about the incredible football player who makes the NFL a better thing. Talk about the fact that he made mistakes and paid his dues, and came back better than ever. It's a great story of redemption. But instead, we're sitting here three pages deep into a discussion by cat nuts about how sacred the bond between owner and housepet is. I hate to break the news to some of you lonely folks, but these animals are just filling a void in your lives. They're a bunch smarter than house plants, slightly smarter than goldfish, and ultimately they are wild animals you've forced into your homes, turned into your roommates, and dress up in clothes when the weather gets cold. And if I hear the "I like animals better than people!" sentiment one more time, I'm going to de-wing a pigeon on my way home.Glad to see Vick back. It's a blast watching him play football, and it's an absolute crime that he went to prison for as long as he did, lost years from the prime of his career, and nearly lost his livelihood altogether.
Dude paying his dues would have been to be chained to a tree and let a few pitbulls have their way with him. That would have been paying his dues not spending 18 months in a country club.
Yeah that sounds reasonable. How many wild animals do you own?

:lmao: at this trainwreck of a thread and everyone ignoring Joe's request from page one.
I'm not sure how Joe's request to "keep it about football" was even feasible when the original post was "How to make it in America: kill dogs, get $100 million."

Horrible decision by the Eagles unless they an on cutting him after 2 years. Vick will be way too expensive to carry while they try to find their next QB. Vick doesn't have 6 years left, and he's not a mentor. They won't pay him while in full rebuild mode, which they will be in 2-3 years.
Full rebuild mode in 2-3 years????? That's just crazy talk.Look, no NFL contract is what it seems and this is the same way. It's essentially a 3 year deal and he'll never see the big money of the contract.
Why not just sign him to a 3 year deal then and re-evaluate his status in 3 years?
Are we new to understanding football contracts and how they work?40 mil puts him at 13.3 mil a year for 3 years or 10 for 4. Either way, he is still an elite QB who deserves elite money. Whos to say they may not release him after 2 years. Its the NFL which means they do what they want with contracts.
heard today he will only see like 11% of the money because of the money he owes creditors and the falcons

Ok, at the risk of this not being seen because people who actually want info on Vick's contract are probably long gone by now... his contract is not really $100 million and his $40 mil isn't all "guaranteed".

I noticed a few posters throughout the thread that seemed to actually try to stay on topic so I figured I'd post this in case anyone finds it interesting.

Basically, ESPN has for some reason decided that "one hundred million" and "fourty million" are going to be their reported numbers. I guess you could say they rounded up by a lot. Here are some highlights of the article that I link to after this post (if you don't want to read the entire article):

- $40 million in guaranteed money. You would think that "guaranteed" meant that it was actually guaranteed, right? No so fast. First off - it's $38.5 million - of which 3 million of that is a bonus he gets only if the Eagles win the Super Bowl in 2011 or 2012. If you think that's a guarantee then I have Green Bay for you on line one. Along with about 3-5 other teams after that. So it's actually near 35 mil but for some reason ESPN reports it as $40 mil.

- There are TONS of stipulations in his contract where he gains salary if he gets to the Champoinship Game or Super Bowls. This is pretty common in lots of contracts. One strange one in Vick's, though, is that some years his base salary decreases if he hasn't won a Super Bowl. It's looking like his contract is no where near it's max value unless he wins a Super Bowl. Pretty different from Manning's contract.

- Here's the part that I found most facinating - the last year of his deal (2016) goes totally away if in any year of his contract he plays more than 35% of his eligible time. If you're like me then you had to read that again to make sure you saw it correctly. That's right - if Vick plays at least 35% of his playtime this year, next year or any year in his deal then the last year of his contract just totally goes away. That's $20 million pretty much guaranteed to be gone. In the article the writer says they put that last year on there just to make it hit the $100 million mark. That would seem to make the team, Vick and (more likely) his agent look good. I find this hilarious.

The writer goes on to say that Vick's yearly salary is below Manning and Brady. If they don't win the Super Bowl then it drops him down to middle of the road starter-QB money.

The potential is there, though, for a nice 5 year/$81 million deal. I'm taking off that 6th year and $20 million. He'll hit 35% of his snaps at least one year.

Hope someone else finds this as interesting as I did. Lots of interesting details in this LINK

This is the best post in the thread. I almost didn't open it back up due to all the nonsense. Thanks
Ditto. It's one thing to see all the garbage typically associated with any Vick thread but then over half the people on here act like they don't know how long term NFL contracts are structured and they are almost never what they appear at first glance.

Vick's contract is even more incentive laden than most and it should be. Nice summary. Thanks!

Thank you Hoss.

I did hear someone on ESPN radio the other day mention being disappointed in the way his colleagues have reported the story and the contract, but I didn't hear the rest of what he said and haven't heard any more mention of contract details (outside of the 6/40/100 stuff originally reported).

I'm normally somewhat of an ESPN defender around here, but they've really gone out of their way to not report this correctly. I'm not sure why either. I know $100 mill. draws eyeballs and ears, but correcting the story could give them a 2nd round of interest in the contract. They could spend alot of time on the airways explaining/debating the actual details of the contract. Not sure why they'd pass that up.

Anyway, thanks for the info. Sounds like another great contract/personnel move by the Eagles (I hate the Eagles).

I just cannot believe the amount of cash they threw at this guy. WoW. given his age, and playing style, I'd be surprised if he is still in the league 5 years from now.

any QB who runs the ball like Vick does will eventually take a bad hit & get hurt seriously.

I dont deny it's a huge turnaround for his career, and good for him.... but all I gotta say is Wow!

Well good thing the Eagles can void the 6th year by your projection.

I'm glad I took the time to post, now. I wasn't sure anyone was still lurking in this thread who was interested in the actual contract. Thanks, guys.

And Insein - if Vick gets hurt this year and doesn't play - he actually keeps the 6th year of the contract. Read the last point in my previous post again. That's the craziest part of his contract. He loses the 6th year if he plays 35% or more of the snaps in any year. If he were to actually get injured this year before he was able to reach that 35% playtime mark - and it was serious enough that he didn't play up until 2016 then he would actually get paid that $20 million in 2016. Of course then you bring in the fact that they could release him and that is a whole 'nother issue.

That last year with it's $20 mil is just fluff.

Yes thanks for posting that info. From what I read there, its the same as you interpretted. 6th year is meaningless. Unless he got hurt in one of the next 5 years and played less than 35%, he'd never see the 6th year. But then, why would they keep a guy who plays less than 35% of the time? He'd be long gone before that 6th year anyway.

Apologies. I misunderstood what you were implying.

Hopefully, Vick will show just how much of a "changed" man he is by paying off his creditors with the very first check he writes from that contract.

The dog killing and fantasy football aside. Vick will never lead an NFL team to a Super Bowl much less win a Super Bowl. He has and always will suck and choke.
