I'm not saying that *ANY* other FB could have. I'm saying that SEVERAL other FBs could have. As has been mentioned, Alstott was basically just a power back in an RBBC. If he had to compete with Jerome Bettis or Mike Anderson or Cecil Sapps or any other power back, then no, nobody would think Alstott was a pro bowler. If you buy DVOA, then in the entire DVOA era (2000-2006), Alstott only had a positive DVOA twice- the other five seasons, Alstott was noticeably below league average when it came to rushing the ball.I'm not convinced he's a Hall of Famer, but to say any other FB could have done what Mike did with more carries is pretty stupid.People lament that Alstott will be kept out of the HoF because he doesn't have the stats... but if it weren't for his stats, no one would even be bringing him up for the HoF. The only reason people even know who Alstott is is because he got used as a halfback far more than his FB brethren, which means he got better stats, which means he made pro bowls. If other teams ran their FBs as much as TB ran Alstott, there's no way anyone would even vote him into the HoVG.
He didn't say "any other FB" could do with Alstott did. He seemed to imply that enough of them could have done good enough to where Alstott would be a mere afterthought when it comes to talking about the HoF or the imaginary HoVG.![]()

I agree. In my mind, the "HoVG" is for players like Drew Bledsoe, Rod Smith, Jerome Bettis (I know, it's an unpopular opinion, but I don't think he belongs in the HoF), Edgerrin James, Isaac Bruce, or Art Monk. Mike Alstott was a good player, but he wasn't of that caliber. Doesn't mean he's dogmeat, it just means he's not in the top tier of players (the HoFers) or the second tier of players (the HoVGers). Call him a third-tier player, a Hall of Almost Very Good player, and maybe we'd have a discussion.Uh, the "worst" rating in the poll is "not in any HOF". How do you equate that with "not worth a damn"? I voted that because I watched him play during his career and didn't find him to be more than a good player.
