If Ryan Mathews decides to go into ministry or is unable to play football for whatever reason (I don't like hypothesizing injuries), what value or role does Tolbert have? Do they go find another running back? Does Hester move into tailback (who is pretty limited with the ball in his hands) and Tolbert move to fullback? I was just wondering if Tolbert launches into RB2 territory if Ryan Mathews decides to become a gym teacher.

Disclaimer: This is no disrespect to Mathews as a player, I thought he looked excellent Monday night.

If Mathews gets hurt Tolbert is probably his handcuff with Sproles remaining the passing down RB. Tolbert is also going to see red zone looks when Mathews is healthy and Turner spoke yesterday about Tolbert being one of his moving parts he still needs to find a way to work into the offense. Yesterday the main Charger beat writer was asked why Mathews was not in the game when they got down to the Chiefs goal line and his response was the better question is why was Tolbert not in the game. This is actually what scared me off Mathews as a mid second round pick. Little passing down work and a good possibility of a 3 headed goal line committe.

Short-term (i.e., for the rest of this season), I think Tolbert would get the majority of the carries if Mathews were unavailable.

In the offseason, I think the Chargers would draft another RB if Mathews were going to be unavailable.

I think its highly dependent on the time and where the Chargers are at that time. If it happens this week, I can see the scenario above playing out for a while at least. On the other hand, if it happened in the next 3 weeks or so (before the trade deadline) and the Chargers are feeling they are a strong team, I would expect them to try to get a player from somewhere else. Lynch comes to mind.

If this is true, then why isn't he owned in more leagues? He's backing up a rookie running back whose durability is obviously unknown at this point on one of the of the better offenses in the NFL.

Tolbert didn't have an extensive college career carrying the ball. Hasn't proved he can handle the bulk of the carries even in his college days.

Played against very weak competition. I don't even think he would be a good handcuff.

He's the same guy as Jason Snelling and Jason Snelling isn't owned either.

The year he became relevant, McClain remained a free agent even in deeper leagues while producing week after week. People just kept thinking he was FB so he couldn't possibly be fantasy relevant. That's the mistake I think most people are making with Tolbert. He's the back-up FB, but he is definitely the 3rd RB and the handcuff to Matthews

Where is this coming from? And what is this ministry talk? Link?
I get most of my Charger info from beat writer Kevin Acee. I do think he tends to take an overly optimistic point of view of the team and might be a bit of a mouthpiece for the team to use to get information out. Still he's the best source of Charger info I can find.He got me started thinking about Tolbert when I read the passage below from him back when Mathews was holding out. Also both Kevin Acee and Mike Lombardi have mentioned that they think Tolbert is going to get a lot of red zone touches even if Mathews is healthy. Here is the quote from a July 30th article: Mike Tolbert worked as the starting tailback in Ryan Mathews' absence and likely will continue to take snaps here and there at that position with the starters. The plan is for Tolbert to be significantly more a part of the gameplan as a ballcarrier than he was in his first two seasons. He can run, is explosive and can catch. Here is what Acee tweeted yesterday when asked why Mathews was not in the game when the Chargers got to the goal line:RT @TMCayabyab: @sdutchargers why didnt ryan mathews play at the goal line on the last drive?>Better question: Why not Tolbert? -- kaNow here is a video from Norv's presser yesterday:http://www.signonsandiego.com/video/?bcpid=33836215001&bclid=46882334001&bctid=609528722001 Fast forward to about the 3:50 mark. Norv will mention the offense has a lot of moving parts and they need to figure out how to use and than specifically mentions needing to find the correct way to use Mathews, Tolbert and Sproles. Add it all up and I think Tolbert is not only a handcuff to Mathews but could end up being a weak bye week/injury flex TD vulture type fill in.

Anyone start both of those guys this past week?

Ha. I was actually a witch in my past life, I can actually will a player into a featured role. I know, it's an unfair advantage.

Watching Tolbert run reminds me of that gigantic boulder that almost crushed Indiana Jones. If I owned Mathews, I would certainly try to get him as a handcuff.

This made me chuckle. It made me chuckle more when I imagined Tolbert getting into the endzone only to have a poncy, Frenchman, accompanied by 50 tribesmen, take the football from him.
