Mike Williams To See "Significant" Playing Time? (1 Viewer)

From www.profootballtalk.com:

"MIKE WILLIAMS TO SEE "SIGNIFICANT" PLAYING TIME ON SUNDAY

A source with knowledge of the situation tells us that Lions receiver Mike Williams will have "significant" playing time on Sunday against the Vikings.

Williams has been working his way out of the proverbial (or, as the case may be, perverbial) doghouse in Detroit. On Thursday, the Detroit Free Press reported that coach Rod Marinelli recently said Williams is "practicing very well." Fellow receiver Roy Williams has been lobbying for the 10th overall pick in the 2005 draft to see more playing time.

Williams' resurgence could be tied to renewed concerns that CEO Matt Millen is again facing a firestorm of local criticism. Those who want to see Millen out of Motown point directly to the decision to piss away top-ten picks on guys like Charles Rogers and Williams, a well-hyped wideout who sat out the 2004 season after declaring for the draft in the wake of the initial ruling in the Maurice Clarett case, being prevented from entering the NFL when the Clarett case was reversed on appeal, and losing his eligibility at USC due to the fact that he retained an agent in connection with his preparations for the draft.

Indeed, Millen's only remaining hope could be tied to Williams' ability to fulfill his potential. Soon.

Williams had 29 catches for 350 yards and one touchdown in 14 games last season, and he has no receptions in only one appearance this season."

Is there anything to this?

i saw that too but i dont think its gonna happen

i would wait and see what happens on this one

maybe if the wrs werent being productive but that hasnt been the problem. at best he will be in for a few third downs but i dont see significant time

Furrey is getting the job done, no way at this point do they let Mike Williams screw up the chemistry. I know Roy williams has been hyping Mike W., but if I am Kitna and Martz, I stick with Furrey. Mike Williams needs to earn his way onto the field. So if they want to see what he has, then I guess I can see them putting him in, but not at the expense of Furrey being on the field as WR2.

I do think he might get some significant time, The trade deadline isn't far away. Rogers not signing anywhere didn't help the impression of former first round pick Lions WRs.

Few NFL WRs have the potential he has so with Furrey doing well they have options. One is obviously to play and keep him. Trade him and go with Furrey is another one. If Furrey gives up a couple games of full time action to end up with a career, I hardly think he'd care. Did anyone think he'd even have much of a career 5 weeks ago?

Az Hakim(above) is depth, just depth. Lots of coaches bring former players in to assist in many ways. He's not the future of the Lions like either of these guys or Roy.

The other thing I think winding in here is Martz's ego. I read recently that on this pace Kitna will throw for 42or 4300 yards breaking Lions single season record. Yeah that would feed it. And if he could add in a very talented WR to that passing game.....

He's practicing well for a change and earning time. Roy's clamorring for him.

There's enough "juice" that I think we'll see him. I have low low expectations ...ya know what. I'd feel more comfy predicting Ruvell Martin gets a TD this week than Mike Williams. Just the same, I think we'll see him

If you have room stash him on your bench and see what happens on Sunday. If he does nothing drop him.Thats what I'm doing.

With the trade deadline approaching the week after next they might be showcasing him.
People always say this. Has a team *ever* showcased anybody? IOW is there an example of a player suddenly getting an increase in touches shortly before being traded??
Lamar Gordon. That strategy seemed to work out pretty well for the Rams.
Gordon was traded right before week 1, 2004, and I don't believe he played in the preseason (injured in early August).Dating back to week 7 of 2003, he never had more than 5 carries or 0 receptions. He had almost 20 carries in weeks 4 & 6, but that was because Faulk was out.So no, I don't think that's a valid example.

Local reports have been saying he's doing the right things in practice, and Roy Williams has been sticking up for him in on air interviews, etc.

That said, he supposedly had a good week of practice the week before but he didn't get a sniff of the field last Sunday. Somehow I doubt he sees "significant" time, but he will probably see the field.

Any chance he takes over the #2 WR spot this season? That'd be difficult with the way Furrey is playing.
Sure it's possible, but Williams isn't the typical receiver for Martz' offense. Martz relies on speed and timing, the first Mike Williams will never have, and the second we're all just guessing about because no one has seen him play.I think he'll be a situational guy, probably goalline.I would not be surprised to see him traded this offseason if he shows anything at all.

Isn't this what the article stated - that he's earned his way on?

In fairness, I dont like the "martz needs speed receivers" statements. They may very well be right, but the problem with that statement is we just dont know what Mike Martz can do with a talent of his type. Going all the way back to his days as Los Angeles Rams coordinator, the closest thing he has ever had was Michael Wastebook.

Mike Martz produces with what he has. He produced with Trent Green before he ever did before. He turned Kurt Warner into a star. Same with Marc Bulger. Now John Kitna and Mike Furrey. I guess what I am saying is it isnt about who fits into Mike Martz offense, but rather who Mike Martz chooses to fit into his offense. Before we write Mike Williams off as "not a Mike Martz type", we need to give him a fair chance.

All the people you mentioned that Martz produced with are quarterbacks, with the exception of Furrey, and Furrey has speed.Martz may be able to produce with Mike Williams, but his skill set is not what this offense is based on.

I was making a point that he fits players into his offense, not vice versa. I agree with you - the only visions we can have of Martz offense is with speed guys, but that doesnt mean that he cant fit mike williams into it.

Williams won't be traded because of the cap hit the Lions would take...that is most likely why he wasn't cut. I also can't see any other team giving up much for him.

Furrey has been great and I can't see any reason to bench him. The offense has been great. Unless Williams can play defense, he won't be playing much anytime soon, in my opinion.

when Roy went down I really thougth it was a chance for BMW to step up... the fact that he had zero catches and 2 targets (i believe) does not bode well for him... if he can't even see the field after

1) He has another good week of practice

2) He has teamates openly rooting for him to play

3) The #1 option on the team gets hurt

4) the #2 option on the team is a converted safety

5) coaching staff implies that he'll see significant playing time

it might be time to say that this boat has sailed (on the Lions).. and it's time for BMW to park his car in another garage

Watched the entire game today and BMW wasn't even a factor (although he looks huge lining up on the line). The few times I saw him on camera he looked to be struggling getting any type of separation and with the Vikes defense blitzing a lot Kitna had no time to wait for BMW to get open. He had one chance to make a big catch and he flat out dropped it. On the other hand, Furrey and Az Hakim got open a lot against a secondary which isn't known for its tight coverage.

BMW had a chance today and he blew it. Plain and simple.

Lions WR Mi. Williams Drops Opportunity

John Niyo, Detroit News - [Full Article]

When Detroit Lions WR Roy Williams left the game with a shoulder injury, WR Mike Williams stepped in. M. Williams stayed on the field for about six plays and was then benched after dropping a pass on third down and 19. "That's kind of how the year has been for me. You just roll with it," M. Williams said.

Kowalski

goosecat: Tom, why did Mike Williams PT decrease as the game went on? He must have run the wrong routes or not blocked well or something.

TomKowalski: I THINK IT'S BECOMING CLEAR THAT THE COACHING STAFF IS JUST LOOKING FOR WAYS TO KEEP MIKE WILLIAMS OFF THE FIELD ... THEY CLEARLY DON'T THINK HE CAN HELP THEM WIN

New Bear Fan (ND): Killer, why is it only the fans and Roy Williams that seem to sense some sort of double standard when it comes to BMW? Bodiford is allowed to be completely lost but BMW is in the Doghous of Perpetual Darkness.

TomKowalski: BEAR FAN ... I SAW YOUR QUESTION .. LIKE I SAID, THE COACHING STAFF DOESN'T LIKE MIKE WILLIAMS FOR SOME REASON ... I DON'T HAVE AN ANSWER FOR IT ...
