Millen Eats Steve Young's Lunch (1 Viewer)

I saw the Millen/Young exchange.

I thought the idea of Millen lecturing a Hall of Famer who was a leader on several great teams that he had no idea what goes in locker rooms ludicrous, overly sensitive and shallow. Young sounded like the player with insight, Millen like an over-sensitive failed ex-exec.

:potkettle: He lectured him about not knowing what was going on in that locker room, and he's exactly right about that.

Millen is very good studio analyst. He was just a terrible GM. He also might have been handcuffed by the Fords who are known meddlers.
I think Millen didn't need any additional help being a terrible GM.
The Fords gave Millen full control. The Fords did not draft WRs early in the first round of the draft FOUR years in a row when the team was imploding on both lines. The Fords did not take Drew Stanton early second round. This was all Millen. Millen was a laughingstock for his evaluation of talent among other NFL GMs.This it is why it is so difficult to listen to Millen talk about any players future potential when he does college. How could you take anything he says seriously given his track record.

Drafting and team building are different albeit related skills to player evaluation. Even so, Millen as a former player still has a lot to offer in terms of NFL game analysis and commentary which is the part of his stuff that I like. I agree he was a miserable GM.

Millen should not have a job. Steve Young makes Paula Abdul sound like a Rhodes Scholar.
Steve Young has a law degree.
And a dullard.
He was only one of the best QB's to ever play the game. He was a monumental success at every level and holds a law degree from J Reuben Clark, ranked 8th in the nation by Princeton Review. Where is your law degree from? He's anything but an idiot.

I'm not going to call Steve Young an idiot but he does sound like one on TV sometimes and none of the things you listed makes him a good TV commentator. And Princeton Review does not do overall law school rankings. They rank schools in 11 different categories to help prospective students make decisions about where they may want to go and clearly state that there rankings are not a reflection of the overall quality of the law schools. I don't know what category BYU's Law School ranks 8th in but your post implies that they are a top 10 law school which is simply not the case.

US News and World report releases the most widely recognized law school rankings and BYU is 42nd. My wife has a JD from Notre Dame which is ranked 22nd and umm.....she's not that smart. So again, I'm not calling him an idiot but just wanted to point this out.

That said, I don't care for Millen or Young on TV. I NEVER liked Millen as an analyst and don't understand why people thought he was so good before he became GM of the Lions. I thought he was bad before and worse now. And Young started off ok with ESPN but he has gone downhill every year IMO. Obviously being a good or even great player does not make you good on TV. I think Millen and Young are both pretty bad.

In this case though, I agree with Millen 100%. Young is stating that Favre runs the team b/c it's a cool thing to say and a lot of the media and general public have bought into it. But Millen is right in that Young is stating it as if it's fact when he has no idea what's going on in that locker room unless he's talked specifically to Vikings players about the situation. I think Millen reacted that way because as a former player, he would not have expected Young to just repeat a media soundbite like that without really knowing what's going on.

I don't think it's fair to compare ANYONE to Emmitt, he coined a these wonderful comments:

1. "Wade [Phillips] inherit this success." (Commentary: That may be true, but it also looks like someone will be inheriting Emmitt's seat on Sunday NFL Countdown sometime soon.)

2. "My game-breaker go to Brett Favre." (Commentary: And my dictionary go to Emmitt. Please, Emmitt, start reading.)

3. "And when defense felt my will, it was a total different game then." (Commentary: Scoring touchdowns? Easy. Using adverbs? Impossible.)

4. "The Packers don't has a running game." (Commentary: And if this keeps up, ESPN will not has good ratings.)

5. "This team have not played confident football in three weeks." (Commentary: I love it how Emmitt refuses to use contractions. Emmitt doesn't cut corners!)

6. "He gets the ball over to their third read than most quarterback can." (Commentary: I think Emmitt forgot a word here, but at least he didn't say "He get the ball over...")

Here is the full list, if you have never read it... do yourself a favor and read it. (You will agree Emmitt =WAOAT:

Wow, he really can't do subject-verb agreement. It's too consistent to be nerves. I think he might really not know how to conjugate verbs. From where did he graduate? (couldn't set myself up here)
