Millennials and Job Searching question (1 Viewer)

This is a unique situation because they are in demand fields - computer science and engineering.

Sounds like they're smart and have a plan. That doesn't mean you can't still have conversations with them about it from your perspective.

PA guy shouldn't be comparing an offer with Google guy, just as a history major better not be comparing himself to your son who turned down $65k. Not apples to apples; too many variables to list.

While it's good for them to make the most of their leverage, on the other hand I wouldn't want to wait until the last minute either.

Well to update - not that anyone cares

He had 3 more interviews

One place he really wanted (Company A)  Two places he liked but not preferred. (B&C)

He was offered a job from one of the 2. He sent an email to Company A saying, he had a job offer from another company but really wanted to work for company A - were they close to making a decision.

Company A - replied and made him an offer and he accepted.   ******* gets Free Insurance also.

SO moral is - I'm a dope ;)

Not a dope...  applying experience gained in one job market to a different job market doesn't  always make sense.

Sounds reasonable to me.  Kids need to explore their options and make mistakes early...if they don't, they'll regret not trying their ideas and will test them out later in life when it's much harder to recover and more people get hurt.  Sounded harmless, and sounds like they landed pretty well after a search.

Congrats to belljrjr.

Now, when is he moving out?
I made a deal with my kids when they came back from college. "You can live at home rent free as long as you are banking your $ & not buying stupid #### that eats up your available credit". Both of them stayed for about a year & left to share apartments with people they went to school with. Daughter (the younger of the two) is buying a condo & settles next month. Son will be a renter till all his peers have married off (if thats even a thing) & move to less hipstery areas

Did you allow them to have....ummm....overnight guests?

slightly in certain instances I suppose.
House rules are house rules. We have 21 yr old fraternal twins living with us now (niece & nephew). The rule is fairly simple... you can have guests in your bedroom (non gender specific) but the door must remain open while guests are present. I pointed out to my wife that sooner or later one would be bold enough to engage in coitus with the door open, and be within the letter of the law, so to speak. ;)

This is about where we are. He actually hasn't been home much in the last 4 years. Since school was all year long with co-op. Some breaks here and there.

The job is close to home. So the plan is he'll move back June /July out of his college apartment. Then next summer move into his "own apartment"

Offered a similar arrangement to my HS Senior daughter who will be going away to Louisville next year.

Upon graduation, she can return home and live for $500/month.  She can stay as long as she likes.  She won't be able to move out with any friends, etc and live cheaper considering I'm including room, food, utilities, etc.  This will give her an opportunity to actually have something to budget for, albeit it's far from the "real" world.

When she decides to move out - I'll refund her the full amount that she's paid in.  Forces her into saving for a down payment.  At this age, she didn't like this deal but I bet in another 4 years, she'll change her mind.

I would definitely stress this. If he bailed on a job after 6 months for a better opportunity, his boss will probably give him #### for it and say it will look bad to have left so quickly, etc. Who cares. As long as he's not trying to go back there one day, no one will think twice about it. It's an easy explanation if it ever comes up with future employers.
If you are there for that short it doesn't even show on your resume.

That's a smoking deal. She'll thank you for it.
