MIN WR Troy Williamson's Reaction To His First Drop In Week 17 (1 Viewer)

Okay, assuming we can quickly get the "Who cares?" or "Williamson SUCKS" comments out of the way, I wanted to see if anyone else out there who watched the Vikings/Broncos game today (or saw highlights of Williamson's drop) paid much attention to what Williamson did AFTER the drop. If you did, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.

To me, Williamson's actions after that drop seemed like those of a man with a LOT of "demons" and some serious, serious confidence issues...but also a man with a lot of heart. If you followed the Purple in the off-season last year, you saw a number of articles on Williamson and how hard he was working to correct vision issues related to dropped passes. He seemed like a man on a mission in the off-season, and honestly showed signs of improvement! However, seeing his little 1-2 second "personal hell" after dropping that easy, long TD...and the "Why me, God?!" look on his face when he dropped a key third down conversion later in the game, just seemed to me like a guy who is carrying about 200 extra pounds around on his shoulders related to this issue...and that his problems are probably at LEAST as much related to confidence or self-fulfilling prophecy as they are anything "physical" or "mechanical."

Of course, there's that darned Ockham's Razor which would simply state that "Williamson sucks!" :( I just hope he doesn't devolve into a "LACES OUT!!!" (Ace Ventura: Pet Detective) type of situation and waste his chance at the show. He may have already wasted his chance with the Vikings, but he seems like a good/nice person with quite a bit of talent, and it'd be a shame to see him flame-out so quickly...regardless of what jersey he happens to be wearing in 2008.

The problem is that he can't catch a ball, and for an NFL receiver that's a really bad thing. I wouldn't even want him playing DB/saftey because I'd expect a DB to be able catch the errant thrown ball every once in a blue moon. I know he's had some flashes of brilliance in the past (heck as a Vikes homer I even picked up the guy off wavers on my fantasy team a year or two ago), but after that 3rd down missed catch I'm done with the guy, I don't care what his issues are. If I were T Jackson after that play (and the missed sure touchdown - I did see both plays and Williamson's reactions) I would have walked up to coach Childerss and said, "either take Williamson out, or I am not even going to look in his direction the rest of the game - you might as well have 10 players on the field"

Whatever demons he has had he's gotten more than his alloted chances and cant seem to figure it out. I would have taken him out after the TD miss, but they kept him in to see if he could recover, but clearly he cannot. No NFL team should even pick him up next year IMO demons or no, he cannot play in the NFL and has more than demonstrated that fact

:hey: In the other games this season he has shown very good hands and I thought he had his problem solved, but yesterday just killed all the work that he went through. His problems are completely confidence related and I hope he gets a shot somewhere because of all the hell he has gone through in his life (being burned and now his brothers medical situation).

The term "very good" obviously carries different meaning for you. He's been shaky all year long.I feel really bad for him. I mean REALLY bad. I know he worked his tail off to get better in the offseason, but he just didn't. NFL teams simply can't take the risk of putting a guy on the field wondering if he'll make a critical catch. Williamson dropped TWO last night.

Stick a fork in him. He's done.

With his speed, he'll probably get another look from some other team. I know I wouldn't pay this guy another nickel to play football for my team. He simply isn't a football player. He doesn't look, act or perform the part. Seems to have too thin of skin and too long of memory to ever be successful.

Seems like an Al Davis type of player.

The type that helps you draft in the top 5 two years in a row?

Seems like everyone is forgetting that he was a project and had some growing to do. This was known when the Vikings drafted him and I'm sure they realized that it would take a bit longer than the avg rookie. Though it should not be an excuse for poor play, a bit more understanding should come into effect here. Just seems that many have forgotten that...

Williamson still has serious ball tracking/depth perception issues. It was clear on the first drop. Sad, but you have to ask yourself how the Vikes did not detect this in pre-draft workouts...

I think a problem on the long balls with him is that going at full speed he has trouble adjusting to the ball and "picking it up." This is just opinion, but like an outfielder in baseball he might be running on his heels and causing the ball to "bounce" because he seems to be stabbing at the long balls. He wasn't even close at catching the bomb Sunday.

I don't think he has what it takes it to be an NFL receiver and I would try and convert him to a nickle back.

A "project" at WR means running better routes and coverage recognition. Catching is a basic skill that should be pretty well developed for the 7th overall pick in the draft.Williamson catches the ball like it's on fire.

Rice and Allison will be fine @ WR w/ Wade in the mix for the short/mid range routes. Their issue is TJ and his pending development. Sad to see Williamson continue to have issues, but IMO there's talent on the bench that his PT is hindering.

Hopefully they'll bring in a real QB1, or TJ can make a huge leap, development wise, this offseason. He's mobile and has a decent arm, but just can't seem to read a defense. Watching that Bears game - where they HAD to win was very telling about TJ's game IMO.

Going in to the Denver game he only had two dropped passes all season, and he made a couple outstanding grabs that were just a bit out of bounds. I agree he needs to find another home, but saying he didn't show good hands through the other games this season is just being ignorant.

The reason he had so few drops is because it's hard to drop passes when you're not even on the field. He didn't even play in four games. He only had 18 catches ALL SEASON.

I'm not saying that he was all that good...just saying that when it was thrown his way, he didn't have the dropsies (like yesterday).Edited to add: No matter how you look at it...he's gone, and we both are excited about that!

:yes:Really. I do feel bad for him. As bad as I can for a guy that's made, what, about $10 million? He worked hard to get better, but it just didn't work out.

Well scouts were right. He is/was better than Mike Williams :unsure:He's got that going for him.
He's faster than BMW. I'm not sure if he's a better WR though. Honestly this is why I don't understand why teams draft WR in the top ten. For every Tory Holt, there are 10 guys that bust. And there are more than a few teams that do have stud WR and the team still sucks like Arizona and Cincy. It just seems like a position that would be better addressed in free agency with a proven guy vs. the early first round of the draft. Or at least wait until the 2nd or 3rd round to grab a guy.

Every season seems to bring us one or two great athletes at the WR position who simply can't catch the football. I'm talking about guys like Quincy Morgan, Tyrone Calico, Devery Henderson, Darius Watts, and Troy Williamson. I used to be intrigued by the "upside" of this type of player, but I eventually realized that a WR with weak hands will never become a solid starter in the NFL. Save yourself the trouble and avoid the "projects" at WR. If a guy can't catch a football by the team he leaves college then he isn't going to pan out as a receiver in the NFL.

Well, the worst thing for me is the excuses. I was watching a locker room interview on a local sports station and Williamson claimed he saw the ball the whole way and just took his eye off the ball at the last second, trying to run before he secured the catch. I chalked it up to "well what's the guy going to say?" Imagine my surprise to open up the StarTrib to see a completely different excuse this morning.

"[The wind] kind of changed things on me," Williamson said. "I think I should have focused on it just a little bit more. ... I was pretty much too wide open and didn't focus on it [until] the last minute."
This guy has no effing clue why he's not catching, and I honestly believe he thinks these excuses are sincere [although it doesn't make sense he's using contradicting excuses for the same play]. Fact is, he's simply brain locked. This guy is just like the Chuck Knobloch who could not find a way to throw the ball from 2nd to 1st base after doing it for years. The only difference is Williamson has never done it.

Hmm....no. CFL WRs are normally guys too slow to be in the NFL with good hands. See : Ben Cahoon.

Uhhh, it's not his fault the QB and offensive game plan sucked as bas as it did. There is nothing that he could have done about lack of opportunites.
