Minnesota Vikings Team Thread (2 Viewers)

I think RIchardson gets schemed around in the running game a lot. He does get penetration pretty often though. In that sense, I think he has been playing better than Joseph, but if you could elaborate on that, or correct me much appreciated. I haven't been focusing on those guys perhaps as much as you have. When I try to watch them, they are often being engulfed by blockers.
I can't say that I've watched them exclusively, because of course there's so many moving parts on the field, but I have kind of eyeballed them on lots of plays due to being so excited about that duo at the start of the season.

You are actually correct that Richardson has penetrated quite a bit, but it seems to me in the run game it hasn't paid dividends. Almost like he gets back there but is not usually in a position to make a play on the RB. You may be right in that other teams might be scheming around him. Not unlike Harrison Smith in the passing game. Correct me if I'm wrong, but did the Rams even throw 1 pass to Smith's area of the field?!?

But anyway, take everything I say with a grain of salt. I'm no pro scout; just a long-suffering Vikings fan conditioned to expect near greatness and then have everything fall apart at any given moment. It's entirely possible I overreact and have a tremendous bias towards being overly critical on the players and entire organization. :bag:

I understand.

Joseph has played much better in previous seasons compared to this one so far.

I think that is the main thing that's missing. His play is very important for the rest of the defense to work off of.

I am more disappointed in Barrs play than anyone else, but if Joseph were pushing the line back more Barr and Kendricks wouldn't get blocked as much as they have been.

There was one play in particular by Barr where he locks up with the TE but allows the Te to push him outside of the play and Gurley is getting a huge lane up the middle. While I realize the Te is his assignment in coverage if it were play action a better LB would be able to scrape off the block and make that play on Gurley.

Instead Barr just coasts. I'm sick of it.

ugghh.. Losing Hughes would be a downer as he was improving game by game.

Yesterdays win was nice, but they let the Cardinals hang around a little too long. Lots to Love of course:

Defense did well, yes, it was the Cardinals, but missing some key players and still succeeding was nice to see.
Thielen - Nothing to say other then
Murray looked like what you expect a RB to look like.. Not sure if Zimmer got in the OC's ear and told him RUN MORE! .. or if the OC is learning you don't need to rely on Cousin's to carry the entire Offense, but it was nice to see them commit to the running game.

but here are a couple of things that leave me :whoosh:

Continuing to have Cousins drop back in the pocket and wait for deep routes.. The OL is just not good enough to give him the 4+ seconds needing to find open receivers deep. He has proven he can roll-out and sling with the best of them. Lost on why they continue to, not only calls these deep passes from the pocket, but then provide ZERO help to the OL to block..
Not having a TE/RB back there to help block is going to cause the Vikings to rely on the Backup QB sooner rather then later with the hits Cousin's is taking.

WAY to conservative coaching on Zimmer's part at times.. 15 seconds left in the half, 3rd down.. and you call out the kicking team???
Why not call a quick roll-out to give Cousin and the WR's time .. Instead leave time on the clock and waste an opportunity to take a shot at the end zone..
I get it, no Time-outs, get sacked and half is over... But if you can't trust your Starting QB to understand that and get rid of the ball before a sack, well..... :oldunsure:

Back above .500, playing better and a chance to get back in 1st place if they can take care of the Jets next week and the Bears lose to NE.

What in the world going on with Dalvin Cook? He practiced last week and Vikings apparently said that they would put him on snap counts prior to the game day.  And suddenly, he was declared as one of inactives.  Cook had every opportunity to go berserk on Cardinals' hapless run defense.

He was out there pre-game and  doing sprints. During one of those sprints his hamstring tightened up so they decided to deactivate him. Rather they be over cautious then have him re-injure it. Besides, Murray looked more then capable for once this season

Are they expecting Cook to return week 7?  have an opportunity to pick him up as my rb2.
Do you need him for week 7?  If not I wouldn't have an issue picking him up as he might pay dividends down the stretch.  If I owned him I would prefer another week off (if he felt renewed tightness in pre-game) than risk a further injury.

If he felt some tightness it is much better to shut him down than to run him out and possible re-aggravate the injury to keep him out longer.  They should have been able to take care of business without him yesterday so making sure he is ready in December/January is more important than getting him in the game right now.  I have no issue with the decision.

A few mistakes along the way but he has been improving I agree.

Yep the defense was playing some prevent for awhile there only bringing the heat on 3rd down. Let them hang around a bit because of that.

Yeah the defense seems to have fixed some things. Part of that is Barr has been playing well the last two games. Part of that is the Vikings playing 3 safeties more with Iloka and Kearse and not putting Barr is situations where his coverage can get exposed. I saw one play where Barr seemed to be calling for someone else to cover the slot receiver leaking out, perhaps a miscommunication. Rosen didn't see the guy though so no problems. Barr was indecisive, between covering the guy and following the flow of the play to the other side of the field.

Murray had some very nice holes to work with on a few of his runs. The offensive line doing a good job and he took advantage of that for some long runs.

I think there were a couple of those that I would like to see Cousins step up in the pocket more. He already has his feet set, which is a good thing, but if he is going to hold the ball, then why not take a step forward (when he can) and set again since he knows he is waiting that tick before getting rid of the ball anyways.

I hear you though, some quicker developing play calls or just more of them could help.

Arizona was playing zone and because of that the shorter stuff is not as open. So I think that is part of it.

I wish Cousins wouldn't throw the ball right into jumping defenders as much as he did in the game. 6 passes were batted down. He got lucky none of them took a favorable bounce for the defense. Again part of the problem is Cousins is holding the ball a bit too long.

Not having a TE/RB back there to help block is going to cause the Vikings to rely on the Backup QB sooner rather then later with the hits Cousin's is taking.
The great thing about Cousins is that he hasn't had a major injury in his career yet. (knocks on a massive chunk of wood) That is part of the reason why the Vikings pursued him as their starter, because Cousins has played all 16 regular season games for the last 3 seasons.

Plus he is good, but the toughness and availability is important too.

I agree with you though that I would like to see more of Morgan, Ham ect being used in protection instead of releasing so many receivers into routes.

I didn't see this, I stepped away a bit before half time.

It is good to see players improving and the Vikings playing together a bit better each game.

Mackenzie Alexander had a pretty good game. He made some plays against Fitzgerald. He made the mistake of the pass interference in the end zone because he didn't turn around, but it wasn't that bad. I believe it is legal to try to shield off the receiver like that as long as you don't make contact with them (the hard part of trying to defend it that way). If he turns around first knowing that Fitzgerald doesn't really have space left for another move, he would have been fine.

Barr has been playing better.

Joseph has been playing better.

I think Weatherly is improving also. A couple weeks back I was listening to Pete Bercich talk about if Weatherly learns an inside move, he will be dangerous, then pointing out on film that he was using an inside move to great effect.

Hunter has been getting a sack every game.

Part of why the Cardinals had a successful drive was when the Vikings were rotating back up defensive linemen in. They had both Johnsons on the field at the same time and Jaylyn Holmes had 15 snaps, he was playing some left end, I am not sure he played inside or not.

Iloka played on 74% of the snaps with Sendejo out. Anthony Harris made two big plays even though he only played 15 snaps. Kearse only played five.

What in the world going on with Dalvin Cook? He practiced last week and Vikings apparently said that they would put him on snap counts prior to the game day.  And suddenly, he was declared as one of inactives.  Cook had every opportunity to go berserk on Cardinals' hapless run defense.
There were a few plays where I wondered what Cook could have done with those if he were in there.

One of them there was a massive hole on the left side of the play. Murray sees it too and he was trying to get out there, he just can't cut as quickly as Cook can and wasn't able to get outside of the defender. Peterson would have nailed that too.

As far as why Cook didn't play I think others have already explained. He felt something in pre game warm ups, so they decided to make him inactive. This is all about the big picture. They want Cook fully healthy before they play him. He will play a lot better that way.

The good thing about the game is we saw the offensive line come together a bit. Also O'Neil is playing well which is great, because a lot of people doubted he would be able to contribute this year. The group as a whole is starting to gel now though, which makes sense this being Elfliens 3rd game back now. Tom Compton had the false start and made several other mistakes, him and Remmers are still going to be problems, thats likely part of why Cousins isn't stepping up when he could, he isn't used to being able to do that with the lack of inside protection he has been getting. Elflien didn't have a bad snap this game that I noticed, so thats an improvement. I read PFF gave O'Neil the hgihest grade of the offensive linemen this week, and they were one of the groups who thought he wouldn't be able to play this year.

I don't think even the Vikings know yet.

He was close to playing in the last game, so I would expect that he is close to playing in the next one.

I am glad they didn't play him though and if he isn't ready next week they won't play him then either.

Was an "Ugly win(d)" ;)

Cousin's needs to learn to count to 4.. Ridiculous how many times he doesn't have a clock in his head going off to at least throw it away... Not to mention. running back towards your own end zone..  uggghhhhhh

Defense is getting thin.. No Joseph this week, Everson still dealing with personal issues, Hughes out for the year,  Rhodes with nasty twisted ankle, Barr has a injury to his Hamstring... Facing the Saints next is NOT the time to depend on your backups.

I still, and I don't think the Vikings themselves, can explain that complete crapfest that happened vs. the Bills. But 4-2-1 and atop the division

I'm worried about the health of the D as well. Luckily a lot of backups got time in this game and played pretty well. They will likely struggle vs the Saints, but the one takeaway from the Jets game that I feel really good about: even without Linval, they finally shut down a really good running game. It was nice to see.

Treadwell seems to have turned a corner. He's caught 10 of his last 11 targets over the past 3 games. I had given up on him, but I have to admit he's looking like a decent WR3 right now.

Minnesota Vikings defensive end Everson Griffen will return to the team for practice on Wednesday, the Vikings announced Tuesday.

Hunter and Weatherly have played pretty well, especially Hunter.

Would be great to get Griffen back though.

I hear what arcK and snogger are talking about as Linval Joseph is an important element to the defensive line and I don't think any of the players on defense can do what he can do. Johnson and Parry are not nearly as strong. Richardson gets more attention without Linval in there.

They are still a good defensive line without Joseph, because of Richardson and the DEs just not as good.

I thought Eric WIlson played fine for Barr. Not much of a difference. I do think Barr is faster  I like that the Vikings are playing 3 safeties more though and not asking the LB t (besides Kendricks) to cover as much.

Wilson played 23 defensive snaps and Gedeon played 12. Wilson was the first one in after Barr went down.

Barr like Kendricks usually plays 90% or more of the snaps, so I am not expecting that Wilson or Gedeon will play near that much, but the Saints might decide it is a good idea to try to run on these guys and make the play action more effective.

Rhodes is harder to replace, especialy going against Brees. Horton Hill played good after Rhodes got hurt, but Drew Brees isnt giving out bad throws like Sam Darnold.

This is why they draft corners so high. Its nice to actually have some good corners after losing two of them to injury.

If only they would give him a redzone look...all the coverage goes to the other two (as it should)...give the guy a jump ball!!

Everson Griffen back, but Vikings without five starters at practice

Defensive end Everson Griffen returned Wednesday but the Vikings were without five injured starters at practice.

Sitting out were cornerback Xavier Rhodes (ankle), linebacker Anthony Barr (hamstring), running back Dalvin Cook (hamstring), guard Tom Compton (knee) and safety Andrew Sendejo (groin).

Griffen was back after being away from the team for five games to address a mental-health issue. Back but limited in practice were tackle Riley Reiff (foot), who has missed two straight games, and nose tackle Linval Joseph (ankle, knee), who sat out last Sunday’s 37-17 win at the New York Jets.
So the Vikings may be getting Reif and Joseph back this week.

I wonder if this means O'Neal goes back to the bench?

I would assume so but he has been playing well. Perhaps the best of the linemen recently.

I thought the Defense played one heck of a game.. Limiting Brees to 120 yards with only 1 TD while holding their running game to less then 125 yards was a lot better then any of us could have hoped.

Two turnovers did us in.
Theilen's was just a great hit by Saints D and Kirk's INT was a misread by Diggs who stopped on the route, while Kirk expected him to continue.

As many times as I've complained about Zimmer's Conservative coaching, his decision to go for it on 4th down from the Vikings 45 to start the 2nd half was NOT the time to change it up.. From the Saints 45 maybe, but NOT from your own 45.

3 straight division games coming up that they have a good chance of winning with a badly needed Bye Week in two weeks...

Meh, just one of those games where the entire outcome can be pinpointed to a single soul-crushing play... Thielen's untimely fumble, 70 yard return, dumb Treadwell helmet throwing. No, the Vikings did not play perfectly, but leading 20-10 heading into the half with momentum and the ball vs trailing 17-13 with polar opposite momentum... hard to expect overcoming that type of game changer when you have 2 evenly matched teams.

I'm feeling pretty good about just moving on from this 'it happens' loss... Thielen and Diggs are going to win more games for the Vikes than they lose. Hopefully key players are getting healthy enough over the week 10 bye to contribute to a 2nd half push.

:goodposting:   They start the 3rd quarter up 16-10 or 20-10, instead of down 17-13, there is no way Zimmer goes for it on 4th and 1 from their own 45...
He felt he needed to get momentum back on their side so took a chance.. I personally don't think it was needed.. Punt and don't put your defense in a "short field to defend" situation.

Let's hope there isn't any hangover from this and they beat the Lions this week to enter the Bye week on a high note.

10 sacks!  Wow.  I know Detroit's Oline contributed a lot to it, but our Dline was firing yesterday.  Hunter was otherworldly.  9 tackles and 3.5 sacks, not to mention the TD return!

Our defense has played quite well the last 4 games(even in the NO game the defense played well, just were put in bad spots a few times).  It seems like our offense isn't firing like they were at the start of the year.  It'd be nice to get them both going at the same time.  Maybe bye week and a little injury rest will help?

Nice win.. Robinson makes that catch and it would have been a bigger win..
Also, Mr. cousins, when it is 3rd down and 8 and there isn't a defender for 20+ yards RUN THE DAM BALL!!!

A week to get healthy, then off to the Bears and home vs. the Pack.

Zimmer, Vikings Defense Adapt on Fly in Copycat League

“Quite honestly, I don’t think we’ve run any Double-A blitzes this year,” Zimmer said. “Because everybody is practicing them, so we do something else.”

“They’ve been stealing our blitzes for a long time. They’ve been stealing our coverages now,” Zimmer said. “I’m not saying it’s all. It’s similar … it may not be all the same. I told somebody the other day, there’s probably 10 or 12 teams that are running, really, what our base coverage was all the time now.

“It’s like the old thing, everybody copies if you’ve been good. So, then you’ve got to change up and do other things. So far, we’ve been doing that, and hopefully we can go back to doing some of the things we were doing before when they started adjusting to what we’re doing,” Zimmer added. “The whole game is about adjustments. We made a lot of them during the course of the ball game [Sunday]. Sometimes adjustments are moving the line to a different spot or it could be changing up what coverage you’re playing because of the routes they’re running throughout the course of the game. It’s a lot of different things, but the entire time is adjusting.”

I respect the Vikings a great deal, but I don't see how they can possibly overtake the bears this year. The Vikings have a decent offense and an impressive defense. The bears have an exceptional offense and an historic defense. They are a team of destiny this year and they're going to win it all. The Vikings will still make the playoffs, but they don't have the horses to compete with a truly elite team like the bears.

Wow, now that's an impressive display of fan koolaid. I guess my evening just freed up because there's no need to watch tonight.

I can honestly say I haven't really watched the Bears yet this year, but maybe dial it back a little given they haven't proven anything yet. Trust me, as a Vikings fan I know all about getting overly excited for my team and watching the rug get pulled out from under me.

Hoping for a good game tonight and a win for the good guys from Minneapolis. Skol.

I think that’s just his shtick

Beat someone with a winning record and get back to me.

Vikings 27

Bears 17

I get the enthusiasm now. Bears looking really dangerous on both sides of the ball, young, and a bright future. Huge win for them tonight. Congrats to Bears fans.

Vikings continue to come up short. Hopefully they beat the Pack at home next week to stay in the wild card hunt.
