In my main league, when a player is cut they go through a waiver process. They stay on waivers they day they are cut and the following day. If you want you can put in a waiver claim for that player and if nobody above you in the waiver order selects that player you receive him. Waivers run at about 1:45 AM every day for the appropriate players. Once a player clears waivers they are a free agent and anyone can pick him up. (I'm sure you all know the waiver process, just wanted to spell this out for clarity's sake since some leagues run them differently.)

There is one particular owner in the league who will often stay up to wait till the waivers run and then pick up players he wants. He does this to avoid losing his waiver priority slot over players he deems not worth the waiver claim. Let's call him "Bob." Other players have also done this from time to time, there is no problem with it by the league members at all.

This week there was another owner in the league (we'll call him "Jim") that was going to stay up to get players after the waivers ran. Jim and Bob were both online one night at about 12:15 AM and were discussing football. Jim asked Bob if he happened to be on b/c of the waivers, and Bob said yes. They talked about what players they might be interested in grabbing after waivers ran. Neither guy was going for the other guy's players.

Jim then asked Bob if he would do him a favor. He wanted to get to sleep so he asked Bob if after waivers ran he could do an add/drop for him. Bob said he would, but he had a slight question as to whether it was OK to do so. Jim said that if Bob felt awkward about it to simply not do it and it wouldn't be a problem. Bob said it wasn't a big deal and that he would do it. Lastly, Jim and Bob actually face each other this week, so there isn't another owner that could feel he is at a disadvantage this week due to the add/drop.

Another owner in the league is now questioning the "legality" (so to speak) of the add/drop. What say you?

I asked my brother to pick up a guy for me at 6pm once cuz I was coming home from work and couldnt access the site.

 how do you perform an add/drop or waiver claim for another team?? Wouldn't this lead to processing dummy transactions for other teams in the league in order to cause kaos?

This can be done one of two ways. If the person actually at the keyboard doing the add/drop has "commish privileges" on our site (CBS) he can make any move for any team at any time (lineup or add/drop). If that person doesn't have commish privileges, and using the example in this thread, Jim could simply give Bob his login/password to the site and have him do it that way. Pretty simple, really.

Why does the other owner think is was a problem?
He hasn't articulated exactly what his problem is with this. Mostly it just doesn't feel right to him. He has mentioned that Jim leveraged his friendship with Bob, and Bob's habit of staying up to cherry pick after waivers, to Jim's advantage. He feels this circumvents the process and disrupts to some degree fair competition. That's me trying to summarize a few paragraphs into a few sentences, but I think you get the gist.Edit to add...the owner that is unhappy has also expressed that he may have had some interest in the player in question. He wasn't sure he was going to make a move to acquire that player, but he was thinking about it.

If he wanted him so badly he shouldve claimed him off waivers

If he really wanted him he should have put in a waiver request. end of story.

Playing devils advocate here: Bob always stays up way late and gets the best FA players without wasting his waiver position. Does Bob have commish powers and can see who is picking using their waiver wire picks? Is it possible that he is using this power to circumvent the process and give himself or his buddy an advantage? Or is it possible that the other owner thinks the former is true?

abused friend : if you are waiting for the waiver to pass, don't pick up the phone and get guilted into anything

whiner : if you want a player and don't want to lose your waiver priority AND don't wait up until the wee hours, you are taking a risk

I commished on CBS for years and you cant see other people claims on CBS. You can on MFL if you have the commish power on

oui, oui

although I don't understand how one has a system where one owner can make transactions for another. the situation described herein is the least of this league's worries.

were I Bob I wouldn't do it without an email or posted message instruction from Jim, especially if I were a commissioner.

wth?

There's seriously someone out there who worries about this stuff?

1) If someone wants a player, use the waiver system.

2) If someone's willing to wait up until waivers process to see who "clears" to jump on them before everyone else has a chance the next day when they are FA's...well, more power to them.

3) As long as league rules don't specifically state that players can't share login information, then it's a total non-issue, since the practice of waiting up to see who clears waivers isn't the least bit shady to begin with. If someone's willing to help a friend out since they are staying up anyway, then great...that's a good friend.

Complaining owner needs a :clyde:

Why is it considered necessary to have waivers claimed at 1:45 a.m.?

It might be a good idea to move things up a little bit to make it unnecessary to lose sleep to avoid claims that do not affect waiver wire priority.

Perhaps this event is the opportunity to seek to make such a change.
