[Mock Draft] First edition (1 Viewer)

The best way for me to start endulging myself in NFL draft knowledge is to mock up a draft and get some input. I anticipate heat, so bring the hit-sticks :football: .

1) Houston Texans - RB Reggie Bush, USC

2) [trade] Tennessee Titans - QB Matt Lienart, USC

Here is my speculation on how the trade goes down; The Saints don't want to drop to far in the draft and the only teams likely to trade up for a quarterback would be Tennessee, New York Jets and then possibly the Raiders at #7. For the Saints to drop to #7, the Raiders would have to give up a lot, which would not be an unprecedent move by Al Davis. So it comes down to the Jets and the Titans who will offer a marginal package (a #2 or #3 possibly) to move up and secure Lienart.

Saints only drop two spots at most and still get their guy.

3) [trade] New Orlean Saints - LT D'Brickahaw Ferguson, Virginia

Solid left tackle for the next dozen years. Personally, I am so high on Ferguson that he would be the most coveted player in the draft if it were not for Reggie 'All Century' Bush.

4) [trade] Oakland Raiders - QB Vince Young, Texas

The Jets miss out on Lienart and have little fear of missing Culter at the #7, if he is the guy they 'really' want. In addition Mangini and company acquire two extra picks from the Raiders (2nd and 4th round picks) to fill the numerous holes on the team.

5) Green Bay Packers - DE Mario Williams, North Carolina State

Outside of Reggie Bush, I believe Mario and Ferguson are the two big guarantee blue-chip players in the draft. I am sure Packer fans would like to see AJ Hawk here, but Mario will be a far greater impact player in the NFL.

6) San Francisco - OT Winston Justice, USC

So many holes, but none of them worth patching until some resemblence of an offensive line can be assembled. Justice might be a bit of reach here as the 49ers were hoping to see Ferguson or Mario drop.

7) [trade] New York Jets - LB AJ Hawk, Ohio St.

The trendy pick today is Cutler, but I suspect Cutler's stock drops as we get closer to April 15th. The Jets are thrilled to see AJ slip to #7. AJ brings to much talent to a postion Mangini really values.

8) Buffalo Bills - DT Haloti Ngata, Oregon

Great talent and a need for the Bills after losing Sam Adams and 'Fat' Pat Williams over the last two years.

9) Detroit Lions - QB Jay Cutler, Vanderbilt

Detroit is notorious for shocking NFL draft birds and they do it again this year by taking a 'scorecard' player; aka a guy who elevates the team's draft grade on April 17th. For whatever reason, this pick makes the most sense.

10) Arizona Cardinals - TE Vernon Davis, Maryland

Denny Green loves offensive weapons and Vernon will be a difference maker. Edge, Fitz, Anquan and now Davis give Denny Green enough of an arsenal to overwhelm defenses and sell tickets, the former being Green's offensive expertise; if you have more guns, you'll win the gun fight.

11) St. Louis Rams - S Michael Huff, Texas

The dice roll the Rams way as a marquee player at a need position falls to them.

12) Cleveland Browns - LB Chad Greenway, Iowa

Cleveland thinks about Broderick Bunkley but opt for what I now call a 'Patriot Backer' type linebacker. Athletic, versatile and smart. Romeo walks away believing he got great value, which I believe he would.

13) Baltimore Ravens - CB Jimmy Williams, Virgina Tech

Baltimore is crushed to see the Browns select Greenway and instead of reaching for an Ernie Sims, they take the BPA available which is Jimmy Williams at #13.

14) Philadelphia Eagles - DT Broderick Bunkley, Florida State

Eagles are fortunate to see Bunkley on the table as the lose of Corey Simon was devasting last season. The Jimmie Johnson defense loves to attack, but they need a strong fulcrum to work from and the fulcrum starts up front and in the middle.

15) Atlanta Falcons - CD Tye Hill, Clemson

Needing some help in the defensive backfied, the Falcons find themselves reaching a bit for Tye Hill.

16) Miami Dolphins - ...

17) Minnesota Vikins - ...

18) Dallas Cowboys- ...

19) San Diego Chargers - ...

20) Kansas City Chiefs - ...

I like a lot of things here.

I agree about Detroit and Cutler after signing 2 QBs.

So the Jets take Hawk over Cutler? Who do they have at QB right now?

Philly would do handstands if Bunkley dropped to them.

Overall, a lot of good stuff.

For whatever reason, I expect Detroit to do the unexpected.

I think AJ Hawk is a far better pick than Culter based on talent. I don't see Mangini 'reaching' just because he needs a quarterback and I expect the Jets to sign a quarterback before the draft. I probably should have mentioned this above.

Im not sure I understand why TEN, or especially OAK have incentive to move up?

Surely the Jets would be willing to pay more than just a 2 if they want Leinart. Why would the Titans pay such a small price if they knew the Jets we'rent competing with them for the #2?

And who is Oakland looking to get ahead of at #4? Are they worried about GB or SF taking Young? Someone trading up? Who?

Cmon now... Yes, Millen has done silly things, but theres been some reasoning behind it.

This makes no sense given the McCown signing.

 These are the types of questions I am hoping to get, thanks. My thinking with the Saints trade is the Saints are targeting D'Brickashaw and if they trade with the Jets they run a bigger risk of losing D'Brickashaw to the Titans at #3 because Lienart is no longer available, so the asking price for the Jets would be significantly higher.

Chow and the Titans want Lienart and would be willing to sacrifice a small nugget to move up one spot and secure Lienart and I don't think it would take much for the Saints to move down one spot if they were pretty sure they could still get D'Brickashaw.

Raiders trading up, I don't think it is necessary but if their is speculation that someone may want to move up to take 'a quarterback' and Al Davis really wants Young (which I think he does), Al Davis won't hesitate to trade up and secure a guy he really wants.

The Lions taking BMW last year made no sense either, but when the dust settled the pick could be justified. I'll have to revisit the McCown signing, check the dollars and try to gauge the Lions vested interested in McCown.

Not really, it just seemed unlikely. Rogers missing two years and being in the drug program(we didnt know that, but DET's front office did) was significant incentive for them to take a guy falling like Williams.Theres nothing like that regarding McCown or Kitna, both of whom we're paid low starter/top backup money.

The Titans will not trade up....they are as big on Cutler...if not more than they are on Leinart. Chow has little to no power to really get much into this. And he is not fully running his system anyway as Fisher has not given him that much power...nor will he.

Fair enough, but I bolded the comments above that I believe support the Cutler pick. I could be wrong and I do appreciate your input; I am doing this more so to generate some general Shark Pool feedback on my opinions. This helps my understanding of the players and the team needs.

what about this scenario:

I'd like to think that Jets trade with Houston for the #1 pick and Jets take Leinart, giving up Abraham in the process..

N.O. ,at #2, selects Mario Williams

Tenn picks Bush at #3

Houston gets what they REALLY need, OT Brick Ferguson at #4 AND a defensive pass rusher in John Abraham..

I still can't see Houston taking Bush, IMO, they are trying to deal that pick to the highest bidder. they need o-linemen, and a defensive player of Abraham's ability..they don't need Reggie Bush..Kubiak's offensive system made stars out of 6th round pick Terrell Davis, and turned no-name guys like Olandis Gary, Mike Anderson, Rueben Droughns, into 1000+ yard rushers. heck, even Dayne looked good in that system..

Rich Cimini is a local NY reporter who had a Net Chat last night...

For what it's worth - And please comment about AJ Hawk... http://www.jetnation.com/?p=461#more-461

[JETSFAN5180] 8:37 pm: Rich thank you defensively speaking we all know mangini is a defensive guru if we cant get rid of Abe and we seem commited to the 3-4 and we get a qb elsewhere do you see us moving Abe to olb or drafting AJ Hawk at 4?

[RichCimini] 8:38 pm: Hawk, from what I’m told, is more of an inside guy in a 3-4. It would be a waste to pick an ILB that high. If Mangini can’t make the 3-4 work, I think he’ll be flexible enough to stay 4-3

In your mock - I'd would think they would go after the DT in that spot.

If Lienart is taken No. 1, the Saints will take Bush at No. 2. (They drafted Duece when they already had Ricky.)
