Montell Owens to start for Jags at RB this week (1 Viewer)

Shutout

Footballguy
The Times Union says Montell Owens "seems set to start at running back" against the Jets Sunday.

Rashad Jennings is nursing a concussion, Jalen Parmele (groin) is on injured reserve and Maurice Jones-Drew (foot) remains on the shelf. That leaves Owens, a 5'10/225 plodding special teams ace that is more of a natural fullback. In 71 career games, he's rushed just 21 times for 112 yards with two touchdowns. Seven of those carries came in a relief role last week after Jennings went down. Look for a pass-heavy gameplan out of the Jags with Owens leading a committee that will also involve Richard Murphy and possibly Jordan Todman. Owens is a risky RB3 type in fantasy circles despite coach Mike Mularkey's optimism. "I think when he has had his opportunities, which have been very few, I've been pretty pleased with the way he has run the ball. He's just a really good football player," Mularkey said.

How about this guy? Since there has been some talk about Alex Green's prospects for the RB-needy during the playoffs, how about a guy that plays against the Jets this week and averaged a little over 4ypc last week?

as a MJD and Jennings owner, I am riding with this guy. Not that I have another choice. matchup-wise, the Jets have had success stopping the run recently. We shall see..

Did you already have him on your roster or was he available in your league(s)? Just curious because I honeslty know the name but that's about it. Just wondering if people, in general, had ever sniffed out any upside in him prior.

I have no idea who this guy is, but if he is the only guy getting touches he may be worth an add.

he was on the wire in the deepest 14 team league i play in...
I just picked him up, mostly to keep an opponent from starting him and on the off chance he plays well and MJD's concussion lingers (ala Brown/Shady).
Jennings, you mean? Or does MJD have a concussion also?
MJD mid-foot sprain, Jennings concussion, Parmele IR

Being a Jags fan is not always fun. :)

Yes, he's a healthy body starting at RB, but that doesn't necessarily make him fantasy-startable, especially on a woeful team up against a still-respectable defense.

What are people's expectations?

I expect something around 12 for 40 rushing and 2 for 15 receiving with maybe a 35-40% shot at a short TD run. Owens is not terrible and is a Pro Bowl level special teams player so he is a guy that has had some success. He just has not looked like anything special as a runner.

NYJ is a below average run d.
They had been struggling vs. the run before shutting down Beanie Wells last week. Hard to say which Jets D will show up at this point. Can any Jags' homers give us some insight about the guy? Did he impress in preseason? Stand out in any way?

My bad. But the key thing is both Jennings and MJD are OUT this week and who knows about the following week?

3. Jaguars RB Montell Owens (two percent) — With Rashad Jennings (concussion) likely out for Week 14, Owens, most known for his special-teams coverage prowess, will likely start at tailback Sunday vs. the Jets, who are allowing the fourth-most rushing yards in the league. Owens has attempted just 21 rushes in seven NFL seasons, with his first seven carries of 2012 coming Sunday at Buffalo. Fun fact: Owens has more career special-teams tackles (119) than rushing yards (112).

From what I remember of this guy, he has indeed looked mediocre when running the ball..but I figure he may be able to do some damage with enough touches. He seems like a good option at the GL as well, 220 lbs. is a load. He also has something in common with Arian Foster.

I would think Todman would be involved - inactive last week after being signed mid-week, but given the dearth of other RBs, if Todman is up, I would think he has higher upside than Owens.

Wouldn't start either of them though...

I did not go after Owens in any leagues because of this issue. Come game time their are no guarantees that Owens even gets the majority of the touches. Either/both Todman and Murphy could get extended action if they start off hot.

You wouldn't start him though, I'd think most people rostering him are just holding to see how this shakes out. As of right now, he hasn't been rostered in any of my leagues. I'm assuming that will change though.

I guess if people are picking him up (or have him already), it might be a thing where they play wait and see this week and then IF he put up some respectable numbers, he might be an option in the semi-finals or finals.I think another aspect that should at least be considered is: this is the time of the year when a fresh and healthy BIG rb might be useful because he IS fresh and with good size, might at least get some GL touches because of situation, weather, etc. Also, looking ahead a bit, they have a Week 16 game against the Patriots at home and who knows if the Pats will be playing for anything. Maybe someone gets lucky and gets a "garbage game" and he ends up with a couple of catches, 40-60 yards and a Td (or two). I mean, that's pretty respectable for a chmapionship game IF you have injuries and a hole to fill (or just to prevent a potential opponent from using against you). I know; it doesn't sound as exciting as what you envisioned back in September for a title game, but maybe a Montell Owens actually garners more poitns in that title game than a typical RB2/RB3 (Michael Bush type) or a limping WR, or a RB that is being rested for the real playoffs.

Off topic but is mjd coming back this year and if he does do you have the balls to start him in the playoffs?
Only way I see MJD coming back is if he needs to play himself if he makes it to his fantasy football finals.
I had held onto him until this week's WW, but with playoffs starting now and no chance he goes this week, I'm not going to put him in the first week he is back with other viable options (Law Firm types, Moreno even). That means we are looking at week 16, IF he comes back week 15 and IF he looks good doing it. Plus, week 15, his first possible week back barring something really unforseen, is at Miami, not the easiest matchup, and then week 16 is New England, not a great matchup as they could be behind real quick.I traded for him mid season for the upside, but with L Fitz dead until Kolb is back and Shorts concussed, the roster spot wasn't worth it anymore.

I'd rather see Todman get a shot but was surprised that I was able to land my claim for Owens this week despite having a low priority. I don't see anything special in him, but any starting RB is worth owning and should be considered as a flex play.

I've seen a couple of people mention here and other spots that they picked Owens up, if for nothing else, to keep someone else from using him rather than intending to put them in their own lineups. I think that is a solid line of thinking too because it does seem like every year there are a random couple of players that get spot starts during the FF playoffs and make an impact. The jags play Miami in Week 15 and that makes things really interesting if Owens happens to put up a solid 10-15 points this week.

with a scrub at RB and if Shorts is out I'm almost thinking the Jets are a must start. Cromartie locks up Blackmon - hard to see Jax moving the ball with this unit. Would take some balls to play them though - I've been salivating at Mr. Rivers throwing against the Pittsburgh D, but with Taylor out and Rivers having more options the Jets may be the play.

To give some perspective I'm presently debating between starting Owens or Mcfadden. No ####### clue what to do.

Anybody starting this guy?
I am not starting him in any of my fantasy playoffs, as I have B Brown, A Bradshaw, C Johnson and M Forte starting in my two leagues.and I was not able to justify him in Fan Duel...But, @ 2500, I am rolling with him in most of my lineups @ DraftKings... I'm not expecting a ton, but decent numbers for his price there.

So, for those who jumped on board last week, what's the play this week?

Starting him as a flex in pretty much all leagues..I think FBG's projections on him are all low

Started him as a flex last week and as a poster put it above -- it paid off. Not as sure about this week as I might have Amendola coming back or really take a gamble and roll out Mathews vs. CAR.

Owens doesn't seem to be getting much respect from his performance quite yet though.

He showed good vision and quicks on this TD run:http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/0ap2000000107900/Owens-32-yard-TD
jeez...i thought that was MJD running
Thanks for sharing. For a kid being billed as a career special teamer, those were some pretty nice moves. May squeeze him in as flex over Stevie Johnson. Miami D has been solid against the run per NFL stats - giving up the 9th least yards/game and are tied with others for having given up the 5th least TD's. Anyone afraid of the Dolphins D matchup? I have not seen them play once this year, so all I can go by are the stats.

I like Owens but I am afraid of the matchup. I would start him as an emergency, injury fill-in, but I would caution people this week.

I'm not sure yet. My choices are limited still. It's either him, Matthews or Beanie.

I thought he looked really good. I was pissed when he didn't play the first two series of the half, especially since the other Jax RBs didn't look too good. I didn't realize until after the game that he cramped up.

I don't like the match-up, but I like the opportunity. He was a lot shiftier than I expected.

I have to decide between Owens @Miami, Pierre Thomas vs TB, DeAngelo Wiliams @SD, and Felix Jones vs Pit. Right now I'm leaning towards Williams.
