More people have died from Covid-19 in the US than the 39,000 annual driving fatalities, 35,000 annual gun related deaths, 3000 deaths on 9/11, and ro (1 Viewer)

One recent talking point is that the government makes lots of decisions that cost people lives, like the speed limit, which is a trade off between convenience and driving fatalities. Just to give a sense of scale, in the last two months, about 15 times as many Americans have died from Covid-19 than the typical driving deaths in two months.

The leading killer in the US is heart disease at approximately 900,000 deaths annually. Since April 9th, Covid-19 has killed Americans at a rate equivalent to 800,000 deaths per year, and Dr. Fauci suggested that the actual number of deaths during this time was likely higher.

This thread isn't about assigning blame for government inaction or to criticize anyone.  It's to discuss the scale. I understand that people feel safe enough to open businesses in their areas.  That's a topic for another thread too.

Please. Be safe.  Don't take unnecessary chances. I know someone who took her children to a protest without masks. That's unfathomable to me. Even if you're not individually worried about this please don't put yourself, your families or other people in unnecessary danger.

Just heard yesterday it is 320,000 worldwide deaths "reported."   But that number is low and the actual number is over 400,000 thousand deaths due to vast under reporting of deaths in China, Russia, Iran and many other countries.  Just terrible.

Here is a stat I just heard: the United States has 4% of the world’s population, yet we have 29% of the deaths COVID 19.

Some other Covid tidbits.

In Wisconsin, a state that is only 6 percent black, black people account for over half of its Covid-19 deaths. In Chicago, black people account for 70 percent of deaths due to Covid-19 but make up only 30 percent of its population. In Richmond, Virginia, 70% of the COVID deaths have been black.

24.9% of the USA COVID deaths are people in the 65-74 age bracket.   48.7% COVID deaths are people in the 75+ age bracket.  So we need to watch out for take special care of our elderly during this crisis. If you get COVID over the age of 70 it looks like a death sentence.

I don’t think this statement is accurate. Certainly the risk factor is much higher than for the general population.
Not  100% but the recovery chance is much slimmer for sure.  Lets just say this is not good to contract at any age but over the age of 65 makes it even worse..

Probably somewhere in the 5-20 percent range.  Most don't die.  But compared to the 0-24 crowd, it is thousands of times more dangerous.
