The problem with your scenario is that Turner and Phillips could only be interviewed for the head coaching gig.IMHO we should have hired Norv (OC), Wade (DC), and Singletary to lead the men.

Answers to the 3 bolded questions:1) Did you think Sean Payton was going to be able to revamp NO into the team they were this year in one year?1. I don't root for the Cowboys so let's get that out of the way.2. I could say you have no idea what you are talking about. Wade Philips is an excellent defensive coordinator and if I didn't say that allow me to now...but a Head Coach? He has proven he is not suited for that. He won 11 games in Buffalo...woopdee doo, Marv levy did the same thing and went to 4 straight Super Bowls and 5 straight AFC Championships IIRC. And the Bills were terrible when Levy took them over. You have no idea what you're talking about. I remember when Wade was coached the Bills and i didnt think they had a very good team at all. All they did was win 11 games that first year. Bottom line is he was the best candidate out there. What people are failing to realize is the Dallas Defense needs the most help. Alot of money is invested in the 3-4 Defense and the biggest Wade bashers im sure will even give this guy credit as far as running that type of defense. It didnt make any sense to scrap it and putting in Rivera or hiring Norv and basically forgetting about the defense all together. I really think you are underestimating Wade. It seems people are mad because they didnt name some hot young prospect to coach the team.Barry Switzer

Wade Phillips
Aside from Parcells who never was actually able to win a playoff game for them, this is a pretty awful set of coaches. Wade Phillips will not succeed as the HC here...he is an assistant and everyone knows and can see that. Why would anyone want to thrust him out at 59 or 60 to coach again as a HC...Jerry Jones never ceases to amaze me.
Major step backwards for Dallas and more mediocrity in the NFC.
Do you think Garrett as OC is going to be able to keep TO in line at all? Develop Tony Romo better than a lot of other OC around the league? The offense has now gone in the ####ter as far I am concerned and Wade may be able to make the defense stay together but the Cowboys already could stop the run this year...what is the one thing they couldn't do? Stop the pass...and now they bring in a guy whose defense while very good against the run was somewhat average against the pass and benefitted from perhaps the best pass rusher in the game at the moment. Who is going to be Shawn Merriman in Dallas?
But your right, I have no idea what I am talking about so there is no reason for you to post over me and you should simply hit the ignore feature.
Sean Payton coached under Parcells for several years, it's not a shock that he was able to get things turned around after Reggie Bush fell into his lap and snagged Colston late in the draft, and was able to get Drew Brees to sign...he revamped the entire offense.
2) He helped Troy Aikman, was wanted by a few teams, and again...see Sean Payton last year.
I honestly do not understand what you are saying here. Who helped develop Troy Aikman? I think the guy that put him in the HoF was Norv Turner if I understand what you are saying.
3) Demarcus Ware, the guy the Cowboys chose over Merriman.
Merriman has 27+ sacks in 2 seasons and is one of the most feared defensive players. I like Ware a lot too but he doesn't have that type of production yet. Did Ware make the Pro Bowl yet? I am not knocking Ware, it will be interesting to see what Philips does with him...but at the moment Merriman is much more accomplished.
If anybody is a "softie" it's Norv Turner. I didn't say Norv was a better coach but I felt he was a better fit. That said there is a lot of rumors coming out today about the future of the Dallas HC position. Here is what I feel about the Cowboys.
They simply need to progress at QB with Romo...they have a solid 1-2 punch at RB...TO, TG, Witten, and Crayton make a very nice 4some of targets and weapons for Romo to air it out with. The OL needs some work but it looked a lot better when ROmo was under center. The bottom line is not a lot has to be done with this offense so why not get a good play caller over an unknown in Jason Garrett. I watched a lot of Miami Dolphins games and I can't see where he made a huge difference. People argue about what he had to work with...CPepp, Harringotn, Chambers, Ronnie Brown, and OL that was playing pretty well in 2005...took a step back in 2006 it seemed. He wasn't setting the world on fire.
The defense is solid against the run. And to my good friend PIA...Ware is no Merriman my friend. He is good but he is not Shawn at this juncture. They need help at defending the pass and maybe the CB are fine but they need ot adjust at Safety. If they play the pass more then perhaps they lose a bit on run support but Wade's defense in San Diego got by against the pass because they were able to rush the QB. How many sacks did Dallas have last season? I don't honestly know the answer of the top of my head.
I would have brought in Rivera or Mike Singletary to coach the defense and hired Norv Turner to be the HC and OC where he has a solid running game and good weapons in the passing game. Would Turner win the SB? No, but he has proved himself in Dallas and could handle the offense. Dungy doesn't call many offensive plays. Build the coaching staff around the strengths of the team. Just an uptick on this offense which Turner would provide might be the difference in 9 wins and 11-12 wins for Dallas.
I'm not saying Turner is really a better HC than Wade Phillips but I am saying he might play to the strengths Dalas had already on this team. Now you have Garrett...good luck to him trying to work with TO, and Philips who is a softie...Marty was the iron fist in SD, not Wade. Wade is a great DC but he just doesn't have what it takes to run the Cowboys right now.
Gruden, Fisher, Marty, Cowher, all of them are a year out from becoming available. One of them will fail and make an ideal candidate for the job. Dallas wanted to interview Fisher and were declined by the Titans.
You have some very good points but I disagree with you on a few. First off, I'll take D.Ware over Merriman any day. I'll admit, I wanted Merriman at first because I saw him play locally at UMD. Then he held out, then he got busted, then he sent the popcorn to Jason Taylor. Ware is just as talented and doesn't come with all that baggage. You also forget or don't know that Ware was asked to cover, A LOT. He was responsible fro covering the slot rec's sometimes! Merriman just bum rushes the QB on almost every play. (exaggeration but not by much) I would love to see if Wade lets Ware do that. I'm willing to bet he produces at the same level Merriman does.
You are letting personal bias get in the way of facts. Merriman is more accomplished at this point. I like Ware a lot but Merriman in 2 seasons has almost unseated Jason Taylor as the best pass rusher in football. If Ware is used to cover so be it but he is not Merriman right now.
I also think for as much as Bill Parcels helped, he also hindered the overall success of the team. I love Parcels, so don't think I am bashing him one bit. He saved the Cowboys from themselves and were right back on track so I hope Jerry doesn't erase 3 good years. But for all the good things Bill did, such as the solid drafts, replacing the bums with more talented and high character guys, I think he hindered their growth with his old ways. Bill puts players in the best situation for them to succeed at all times. Which is a great thing. At the same time, he doesn't stray from that philosophy very often so it can be a little too conservative. He plays it a little to close to the vest for me and what I think players want in todays NFL. His system can still work, but I think you need to be physically dominate across the board so you can impose your will and his style of football ont he oponent. In todays NFL, its just next to impossible to get all that strength and talent on both sides of the ball to be that physical beast. Todays coaches need to be a little crafty. Shawn Peyton totally out coaching Bill was a perfect example of this IMHO.
Good points!
As far as what I would like? IMHO we should have hired Norv (OC), Wade (DC), and Singletary to lead the men. Pay the OC/DC 2 mil a year and the HC 4. This si the only smart think Daniel Snyder has done. I have always thought more owners should do this. Why settle for inferior corodinator when you can just pay out the ### and get the best in the buss and some with head coaching experience.
So MiP, who do you think the Cowboys should have hired? Tuner for this upcoming season and had Singletary as DC...tell Turner to let Mike handle the defense. And who is your team? Miami and Tampa Bay
Supposedly Norv and McCarthy had an agreement in place that would prevent Norv from taking any assistants with him to DallasIf anybody is a "softie" it's Norv Turner. But just to throw a little gasoline on the fire...NY Giants (1-2), Miami (0-4), Chicago (1-3), and St Louis (0-4)4 teams that have a combined record of 2-13?It's early, let's not get the annointing oils out yet, OK?
No annointing oils, it's early. Double the torches and pitch forks though based on the same small sample size. We will get to see this game in a couple weeks...do you really feel Dallas is a better team? Big deal( SD, Jets, Buffalo) Were the Cowboys supposed to win by 40 points each week. These were not close games. They thumped their opponents, what exactly are they suppossed to do?

Right, and you do know the Pats have been without Rodney Harrison, and Richard Seymour, right? Seymour is one of the best in the NFL, Harrison is aging but he still adds a lot to that already stiff defense.I feel Dallas is an equal team especially with Ellis and Newman getting healthier although the Anthony Henry ankle sprain is concerning. We will get to see this game in a couple weeks...do you really feel Dallas is a better team? I am well aware of the status of Rodney Harrison and Richard Seymour, it is my understanding that Richard Seymour was put on the PUP list and cannot play during the first 6 weeks of the season (meaning he wont be able to play in the Dallas game) and Rodney Harrison should be back next week.Right, and you do know the Pats have been without Rodney Harrison, and Richard Seymour, right?
