Most 50+ Yard TD's in a single season (1 Viewer)

I think Johnson has like 8 or more rushing and receiving TD's of over 50 yards. Jackson has at least 7 (I think) receiving and return TD's of over 50 yards. What is the NFL record for most 50+ yard TD's in a single season? Are these two guys setting a new high mark for the category?

Not a test.....I don't know the answer and I'm looking for some stat geek to fill me in. Tried looking it up on PFR and PFF with no luck.

Chris Johnson has had 6 TD rushes over 50 yards this season and at least 1 receiving TD over 50 before today, which equals 7. Add today's 69 yard TD reception and he has 8 total. So those numbers look off a bit to me for Johnson. Jackson's numbers look right though, so now he has 7 with tonight's 72 yard punt return.

Also, by that list, 7 TD's over 50 yards hasn't been done by 2 players in the same season since 1965 (Alworth, Sayers.)

ETA: just checked Johnson's TDs's again and the numbers do look right....my mistake. So both guys are at 7 over 50 this year already. Sweet. 44 years since 2 players have done it in the same season.

Jackson just bumps up to 8 TD's over 50 yards in a single season and ties Devin Hester and Elroy Hirsch for most ever.

I'm sorry, but I don't understand the level of non-participation in this thread.......266 looks and no other responses...??????

Both of these guys are setting what amounts to basically unattainable records, sans a once in a lifetime outstanding year, and no one has anything to say about it? What, you'd rather debate the issues of starting someone else instead of any Colts player this week?

There are enough responses in the "most exciting player" thread (100 votes) to warrant more discussion here.....for sure.

Back in 2007 when Hester was doing his "thing" there were quite a few threads on his impact on fantasy football, yet he was only a DB with return capabilities, so you needed to have Chicago's defense to warrant any true discussion.

Here we have 2 true OFFENSIVE starters doing what hasn't been done (by those in the same positional situation) for 44+ years and there is no tangible discussion about it?

Give me a break. What has become of the Shark Pool?

The 'record' isn't one that is much talked about, thought of or noticed anywhere. When (if) they come close to Jerry Rice' career record of 50+ yard td's maybe there will be more interest.

I think it's because 50 is an arbitrary number, and it's not too exciting to see someone break an arbitrary record. Both players have been great, Johnson far better, but I'm not all excited about them breaking these "records".

I'm not sure what you're talking about. I gave you a response, with the answer to your question. What more do you want?

i think its great to have two exciting players like this at the same time.

but i agree with those who mark off the 50-yard arbitrary stat. just last week or so we had the chris johnson is the only nfl player with 3 TDs of longer than 85 yards arbitrary stat - though an another guy had 3 of 84 or longer IIRC.

84 <> 85 so clearly that other guy sucks.

I was actually going to post the same thing. Why do we care about most TDs of 50+ yards? Most TDs of 40+ yards is the same thing, because a 44 yard TD could just as easily be a 54 yard TD if the offense was 10 yards further back. That would put Jackson at 9, behind Elroy Hirsch and Randy Moss's rookie year. Make it 30 yards, and suddenly Jackson is tied for 5th while Johnson drops all the way to 18th. Make it 60 yards and Jackson's behind Hester while Johnson checks in at 5th. Make it 80 yards and Desean drops off the list entirely (CJ stays at 5th). Make it 90 yards and they both fall off the list, while Dante Hall reigns supreme (his 2003 season is tied for 1st all-time, and his 2004 season is tied for 4th all time). And actually, it just occurred to me that these lists have been looking for all TDs with a maximum distance of 100 yards, ignoring all the kick returns of over 100 yards (not to mention INT returns and missed field goal returns). Changing the cap to 110 yards changes the leaderboards again, especially on the longer distances.
