The Grateful Dead has several songs that received radio play and they are not especially known for their one hit, so it’s not on this list. 

Free, on the other hand, despite being a great rock band (with many songs I love) got radio play for one song only, and they are known for that song, and since it’s their only hit I felt it deserved to be on this list- pretty high up in fact.

This makes sense. The Dead are no way a OHW band, but you really have to dig deep to hear anything else from Free.

Its not a great song. I don’t even know why I defended it; it kind of sucks actually. But it sucks in a good way. It’s very memorable.

63. “Life in a Northern Town”- The Dream Academy (1985)

For my money, one of the prettiest songs of the 1980s. I really had high expections for these guys. Bought the cassette tape, wasn’t really impressed. Then they faded off the map. 

But I always loved the song- love the “hey o mas”, loved how, when he mentions the Beatles, you can hear the roar of the crowd- just great stuff. Sugarland did a pretty nice live cover a few years back.

Now this is the epitome of a one hit wonder. Nice work Tim.

I have to be in the right mood to like this song. Mostly I find it dreary - which I guess is somewhat the point.

This song was written about British singer/songwriter Nick Drake. (If you don't know who he is, you should.)

The northern town refers to Drake's upbringing in a town northwest of London.

Had no idea, and Nick Drake is one of my favorites.  Now I like this song better.   :thumbup:

Neither Marvin Gaye nor Gladys Knight were one-hit wonders!

Also, Gladys was '67 and Marvin was '68.

edit: but there is a Gaye-related song that almost fits's Tim's description, although the song I'm thinking of was originally by Dion.

I thought Pass the Dutchie was okay when I was a kid, but I heard it recently and was surprised at how bad it was.  Some songs just do not age well.

Yeah, you've been hammered on your subjectivity within the thread, but kudos on this one.  With an assist from Google, I learned Burrows was the force behind many songs.  If I were tasked with this effort, I would probably rank it higher but the project would take me weeks.  This and a few of your other songs  posted  and those added by others from that period were prominent in my adolescence and are attached to some interesting stories.

Waiting for some specifics from '92-97, another formative period.

Half the film is about hippies and native Americans promoting peace and love and understanding. But just in case they can’t get it, the other half is about Tom Laughlin kicking the crap out of a bunch of fat rednecks. 

But the song is great. Cheesy as hell but still great. 

 
The other band that recorded it was The Original Caste. It sounds almost exactly the same, except the lead singer is not quite as preachy sounding.

I saw this movie as a kid too. Like at the drive-in. It was a double feature with something else...both movies were probably too old for me to see.
