I'll be yet another to say Portis is too low. His trade value isn't that high until you actually own the guy...then you realize how criminally underrated he is.
Production wise, he needs to be a lot higher on your list. I would take him over Forte, Slaton, Kevin Smith, Barber, Pierre Thomas, without thinking twice.
Not sure if you noticed, but this is a DYNASTY RB list. Production wise for 2009 he might outscore Forte or Slaton or Smith, but value-wise in a dynasty, I'll take those guys over Portis easily. As for Barber and PT, it's much closer than when I first posted this as I've cooled on PT and Barber is worrying me even more. Depends on team makeup, but I can see taking Portis over both of them.
I noticed this is dynasty. In redrafts I might take Forte over Portis, but Clinton would still be ranked over the other guys.In dynasty, I don't generally worry more than a few seasons out - and at that time Portis will be nearing the end of his line. But he's a sure thing to finish top 10 each year as long as he stays healthy.
We're talking about a potential future hall of famer. I believe there's a very good chance Portis doesn't have a significant fall off until he's 31/32 (which is when elite rb's tend to falter, not at the age of 30 that people seem to think).
I think Forte, Slaton, Smith, Barber, and Thomas are all inferior to Portis (talent wise). I just don't believe any of those players are elite talents - and when it comes to dynasty, I'll take the elite talent over the elite situation nearly every time.
I'm not at all saying I wouldn't love to have those other guys on my dynasty team - just that I believe Portis will score more than all of those guys for the next three years at minimum, and up to five.
We're not talking about Tomlinson, who is about to turn 30. Or Westbrook, who can't stay healthy. Portis is still fairly young. He has a history of durability at a violent position despite getting lots and lots of touches. He's been the focal point of different teams and multiple offensive schemes, yet he's thrived in every situation.
He's an absolute stud. I actually have him ranked
higher in dynasty leagues than redrafts, but he's as close to a lock as you can get for top 10 production for the next several years.
Heck, I was not on this bandwagon before last season started because I was arguing how he had lost his speed. He wasn't ripping off 20+ yard runs (6 total from 06-07). What does he do last year? He ties his career high with 13.
And he's a model of both consistency (guaranteed to finish top 10 if he's healthy), but to actually stay healthy! In his 7 year career, he's missed 12 games - with 8 coming in one season!
He plays every game. He gets lots of touches. He DOES something with those touches. He stays healthy. His
floor is 1,500 yards and 8 touchdowns. I will gladly take that for the next several years than watching Barber lose carries to Felix or Choice. I would take that over Smith and his second half production (many guys have done that before to fall back to nothingness...it's not like he was a top 5 pick). I can see someone taking Forte over that, but I'm not a believer in his talent. I think he's a mediocre player in a good situation and will get replaced as soon as they get the chance (Addai v.2).
