Dear Commissioner Goodell,

I am shocked by your leniency towards that Head Coach in New England.

You suspended a coach from Dallas who used drugs for his health problems five games. However, that coach in New England’s actions could have changed many games outcomes with his blatant disregard for the rules. How can I tell my child “do not cheat” when all it cost you is some pocket change. $500,000 is nothing to that coach. No one person was ever bigger than the game until today. That coach in New England has made millions of dollars off of us fans hard hard earned money. It is possible that it was all because he was a cheater and not a genius.

That coach and his family will continue to live a comfortable life even with that fine. I however have to scrimp and save to pay for the NFL Sunday ticket. Well I now feel like a sucker and I will be canceling my NFL Sunday Ticket subscription. (and perhaps Directv)

He should have received a one year suspension for bringing disgrace to the NFL. You should be ashamed of yourself for not suspending him.

Love it, although I would have been happy with an 8 game suspension in addition to the fines and loss of picks.

I guess my problem is I thought the commissioner was doing a great job cleaning up the image of the NFL by suspending thugs and drug abusers and cheaters (Steroids). However, like in real life if you are in upper management the same rules to not apply.

If you feel the same, express it.

Dear John,I could give a rat's behind if you cancel DirecTV.

I personally think a 1/2 million fine IS significant. Sorry, I couldn't make his family miserable or maybe punch him out in front of said family, but, as commissioner, I have to draw the line somewhere. I also think the loss of a draft pick is significant. Sorry that your definition of leniency and mine are so far apart but that's why I am the commish and you are, well, scraping up change for Sunday Ticket.

$500,000 is pocket change? John, feel free to survey professional sports and give me some examples of fines that large. Heck, MLB gives a pitcher a couple days suspension for throwing a baseball at someones head. Umm, you know pitchers don't work every day, right?

Well John, it's been fun talking to you but I suspect nothing short of castration would satisfy you.

Signed,

Commissioner Goodell

I really have not liked any of the things he has done..There should be a more clear cut line... like before first suspension was 4 games then 8 then a season. Then it was 4 games then a season. Heck now its just a season....or more..

What BB did hurts the NFL more than what Vick did IMO...

So, are you refusing to watch MLB, NBA, olympics, Tour D France(ok bad example)...etc due to all of their scandals? You won't be watching anything except afterschool specials if you stay on that high horse too long.

He and the Pats did not get off scott free. $500k hurts pretty much anyone except Tiger. And losing a 1st round pick is not chump change either in terms of how it effects their future.

Do you think they are the first team to ever cheat this way? It's been going on for years. In MLB several teams have been suspected of having a centerfield camera to tip off hitters - going back to the 1950's.

The Pats win because they have better talent than most and better coaching. Anything gleaned from video is of minimal help. I'm not saying it was right but try to get a little perspective. Players and coaches in all sports have bent or broken rules to try to gain an edge. Belicheck got caught and is paying a fair price. Drug use is a far more serious and infectious problem for players and more importantly those that look up to them.

Why don't you direct your anger and your e-mail to our president and ask him to save some lives and get us the hell out of Iraq? Time much better spent IMO.

Why punish the Pats Fans for something the coach did. Draft picks hurt the team and the fans. Suspend the coach. Fine the team. Leave the draft picks alone.

I do not watch Baseball and hockey any more because of the strikes and greed by both sides. I do not miss it. Goodell was doing a great job until now cleaning up the image of sports. Other sports were soon to follow. What does the War have to do with how I spend my entertainment dollars on? If you think that a person in authority cheating is not a bad example for children than I do not know what else to say. IMO I think it is worse.

 Like you say, I 'm pretty sure a $500k fine would sting for any NFL coach. That is a big fine.

As for comparable or bigger fines, the McLaren Formula 1 Racing Team was fined today for cheating (receiving Ferrari technical documents).

Their fine?

$100,000,000.

No. That's no typo....and the team will continue competing. Kinda puts into perspective how big F1 is worldwide despite it's relatively small viewership here in the states. Has any American sports team ever been fined $100m for anything...or even close? A fine like that would destroy most sports franchises. Hell, that would buy many U.S. sports franchises.

How much did it cost the players that were suspended? Compare Vick, and Pac Mans loss of income. I think they got it right with both of them by the way.

Are you asking about the McLaren fine?If so, the drivers were found not to be at fault and were not fined.

The team was excluded from the Constructor's Championship, but the 2 drivers, who are currently running 1st and 2nd in the points, were allowed to keep their points and to keep competing for the World Driver's Championship.

Of course it's a bad example but what did you want - a good ol' fashioned lynching? I realize you live in the third world some call the south but we don't do that anymore. He's being punished and THAT's what you tell your kids - that is if they even know or give a rat's #### about this anyway. He may very well have some dirt as you suggest. But, doesn't that theory water down your allegations somewhat? I've heard radio discussion that at least ten teams practice this tactic. Personally, it doesn't surprise me they go to that length to get an edge. And I don't think its a surprise to NFL teams who should have steps in place to thwart their efforts.Should NE have been so blatant? No, but I won't go so far as to compare this to criminal behavior.

too bad you didn't read about Wade Wilson before ya wrote that
Wilson took the drugs to help his diabetes. He got 5 games for that. Well in my mind he was just trying to improve his quality of life. That other coach in N.E. was just trying to improve the quality of his image.
Somebody please explain the Wade Wilson incident to me like I'm four. Does him taking whatever he was taking help him coach better? Why was he suspended?
The way I understand it is as follows; It came to light during an investgation that he, as well as others including Rodney Harrison, purchased HGH which is banned by the league. There is no test for it so you can't prove who's taking it. The rules about banned substances apply to both coachs and players. He claims it was for his diabetes but it can't be proven that he took it or gave it to players. He got an extra game and a fine of 100k because he's a coach. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong on this. (like i need to post that, right?)

All NFL employees have the same code of conduct provisions in their contract, so coaches have to adhere to the same drug policy. The CBA spells out the rule, and those caught with banned substances will get hit with a 4 game suspension. The policy also holds coaches to a higher standard so an extra game was added.Wilson claims that he took HGH to help his diabetes, although some medical people feel that HGH is the last thing you would take if you had diabetes and that that would worsen his condition. I have no idea either way on the medical front. So what he was using it for is a bit up in the air (at least to some people).

Gambino, is that you?

Dear Commissioner Goodell,

I am shocked by your leniency towards that Head Coach in New England.

You suspended a coach from Dallas who used drugs for his health problems five games. However, that coach in New England’s actions could have changed many games outcomes with his blatant disregard for the rules. Nope

If the NFL can fine the Patriots then high school and pop warner coaches should be shaking in their boots that they are next. I video taped our week 7 opponent last weekend and we have watched the tape to scout them, even figuring out the signals in correllation to the play called.

Posted in another thread that when I scouted for High School we did the same thing. My memory sucks. However, in High School sign stealing is done more to steal the offensive signals (no helmet radio). The D can change on the fly quicker based on knowing the opponents offensive signals than the offense can in knowing the defensive signals.

Honestly unless they watched the film at half time then the filming was doing no good. How about the NFL worry about kicking out the real cheaters, the guy's roided up on HGH. Merrimen roids ups, gets a whopping 4 game suspension then goes to the pro bowl all while jacked up. The NFL is one huge steriod manifestation and they are worried about advancements in scouting.

In the case of the Jets game, they confiscated the tape before halftime. No watching of the tape.In the GB instance, as reported, they spotted the guy on the sideline and kicked him out, without confiscating the tape, in the 1st quarter.

I guess I am just a square who believes in honor and integrity. What that coach did was wrong. To let him coach again this soon is sending the wrong message to other teams.

Yes, because the comparison here is dead on... great point!

So should the San Diego Chargers have cut Shawn Merrimen after he tested positive for performance enhancing drugs and tarnished the honor and integrity of the game?
