NYG - Retired RB Barber Says Coughlin Didn't Make Him Feel 'Respected As A Player'

Source: Tiki Barber

Tike Barber on his Sirius Radio show, The Barber Shop had this to say about Giants coach Tom Coughlin:

"Tom Coughlin was a great guy. He was great for my career, but as a coach I didn't respect the way he treated players. Everyone asks about my retirement. Why I was walking away. Why I was forgoing the peak of my career. It was because I didn't feel like I was being respected as a player."

You have got to be kidding me.

i agree that it seems like an odd quote from Tiki, but i think its a widely accepted fact that Coughlin is a grade A doosh.

tiki gets a free pass in my book

There was a buzz in NY a couple of weeks ago about a similar quote he gave to Gary Myers (sp?).

Coughlin may not be blameless here, but this "not letting it go" behavior from Tiki is painting him as not-so-classy and a bit of a baby to me. Was Tiki being respected as a player BEFORE Coughlin when he had a zillion fumbles? Coughlin is acknowledged as the one who straightened this problem out.

OK, now you have to be kidding me. Coughlin had absolutely nothing to do with it. He worked with a personal trainer who told him he was holding the ball wrong. He changed the way he carried the ball and he stopped fumbling. Seems to me the only thing Coughlin has accomplished in NY is running off their two best players.

Oh, really?"Coughlin and running backs coach Jerald Ingram helped him change the way he holds the football, carrying it nearly straight-up and locked against his upper body to give opponents less surface area to strike at. And Barber worked long hours in the weight room in the offseason to add strength, which gave him an extra burst of speed."

Coughlin is terrible to the players.

If you want to read something very interesting - readabout how he made players play injured and was sued for it when he was coaching the Jags.

http://espn.go.com/page2/tvlistings/show129transcript.html

JOHN JURKOVIC, JAGUARS DEFENSIVE TACKLE (1996-'98)- There were a number of times when I played out there where I was told I wasn't going to practice. I had Dr. Lucie tell me I wasn't going to practice. And then all of a sudden, the head trainer, Mike Ryan, would come over, and he says, "No, put your equipment on and go out there and do what you can do." And if the doctor says, "Listen, this guy can't practice," well, that's gold. That's it. That's biblical verse. It should not be challenged. And unfortunately, I think, a lot of times it is challenged.

FARREY- Former Jaguars say there was a double standard for stars and marginal players. In a video deposition prior to the Novak trial, All-Pro tackle Tony Boselli said he was allowed to sit out practice that summer due to an ankle injury, while Novak a month later was cleared to practice with his injured shin. He and other teammates found that odd.
Read the entire article to get the full effect but this highlights what Coughlin is all about.

The SI article I read told it differently
So, you called me out as being totally offbase based on reading one SI article -- that I assume was written well after the fact? The USA Today articles are from 2004; they were written "as it happened". As I said, it was widely acknowledged.

Unfotunately, if you talk to most retired players, they had similar experiences. And consider just his week Jammal Brown's injury - which fortunately wasn't severe, but the guy shouldn't have been practicing in the first place. As for Tiki - I always thought he was terribly overrated. One of those guy I just wouldn't draft.

I heard the spot, and that's pretty much the opposite of what Tiki intended to say. The way I interpreted what he had to say was this: he wasn't having fun playing football any more. If it's not something you want to be doing anymore, then you should be doing something else. Tiki was very adamant about how in America you have the freedom to make decisions on your own, and he doesn't respect those that won't make decisions for themselves. Here's how tiki described football: you go to camp for a month, where you have to live in a dorm room, and you are away from your wife and kids, just to get ready for a whole season where you are beat up on a weekly basis. in the end, he simply didn't want to do it anymore. He wanted out at the start of last season and knew that '06 would be his last.

He said nothing bad about Caughlin and went out of his way to sing his praise. At least, that's how I interpreted it.

conversely, Maybe Caughlin could have made it easier for Tiki and the whole team and could have made things fun again; but that's pure speculation.

I've been a NYG fan for 33+ years and have attended or watched damn near every Giants game over that period. In my opinion Tiki was a malcontent and a baby. If Coughlin hadn't taught him how to carry a football correctly, Tiki, uh I mean TiVi (because THAT'S why he retired...to be on TV) would have fumbled his way out of the league and barely registered a blip on the NFL radar screen.

Bring in the The Beast! It's Brandon Jacobs time.

:pickle:

Yep. he was a star, and a great worker, but he also wanted to hear and read every day what a star and great worker he was. What was that line about Reggie Jackson? "He'd give you the shirt off his back, but would call a press conference to announce it".Respect as a player? Tiki, that little piece of paper with your name on it, and the 7 figure salary on it? Yeah, that was your respect.

Coughlin was the best thing that ever happened to Tiki's career. If he was smart he would have stuck around another year, racked up 1500+ all purpose yards, and left the game with a good shot at the HOF.

As it is, he'll be forgotten in 5 years.

No, he'll be on TV. The guy has made plenty of money and accomplished a lot. I don't think he has any obligation to play another season to pad his stats.

I'm not sure in 5 years that he still will be on TV. The guy is a pain to listen to.

I've hated Tiki Barber for some time now. I'll add this to my list of reasons.
Have you already included the way media-savvy Tiki still managed to screw up early last season and accidentally talk to his brother about his planned retirement within earshot of a reporter?

Coughlin is an old-fashioned hardass. And no one likes a hardass. If you can't win the respect of your team, how are you gonna win football games?

If you're gonna be a hardass, do it the right way. Be so good at what you are preaching, that the results spreak for themselves. A guy like Bill Walsh could get away with being a hardass at times. He demanded respect. His brilliance demanded respect. Bill Belicheck demands respect. Coughlin on the other hand, has been a head coach for years now, and he has been a second rate coach the entire time. What has he done to earn his respect? Absolutely nothing. The guy should be fired IMO. Bump him back to to a coordinator position where he belongs. He is not a leader.

Today's update - quote of the day...

Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Terrell Owens showed up 20 minutes late to practice on Thursday morning. However, Owens, head coach Wade Phillips and team owner Jerry Jones said later in the day that the situation has been resolved. "He and Wade worked that out, and that's good," Jones said. "And both were very satisfied with how it worked out."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Anyone want to guess Jones "resolved" this with a "Hi Wade. I'm gonna need you to not worry about T.O. here. Thanks. That would be greaaaaat." No big deal. Just bringing you everything you need to know. Plus a couple of things like this you might could live without, but it wouldn't be as much fun...

  :boxing:
