My League Found FBG (1 Viewer)

20 year old 10 team keeper league. Get to the draft and set up my DD only to see 3 guys who I have never seen on a computer, let alone a laptop, pop one open and turn on their DD as well. Another comes in with FBG shirt and VBD sheets printed. Another was sharing with one of the DD guys. 2 others I know use the site but not as a primary.

I used to be the only one with the little DD countdown timer. Now, 4 of them went off.

On one hand, with the DD guys I "knew" who they were drafting most of the time because they didn't vary from it that much except for the keeper aspect. All in all it changed the dynamic of the draft a ton.

Don't know whether to be happy, upset, or indifferent.

The T-shirt was nice.

Wasn't long ago, no one had much information about training camps outside of newspapers and magazines. If you did find a gem out there on the internet, like this rookie Curtis Martin was gonna start, you were king for the year. Now there is information overload, and everyone has all the latest depth charts, projections, and cheatsheets. Teams tend to be much more evenly matched. It comes down to good judgement and some good luck.

An owner in my league came over for a party this past winter. Well she saw the footballguys on my laptop (I was in the FFA and left the site open). She asked what it was and instead of me playing it cool like "ah, not sure what that is..." I was like "damn, now you know my secret website blah blah blah." She laughed and sent the address to her phone so she wouldn't forget. I am not happy. I am not angry at her but myself for making such a foolish, drunken mistake. I can only hope that she didn't find the DD. I don't care if she looks at the content but it's the DD that makes me worried.

See, that's the thing, with the guys using the DD I did really know who they were taking. In that, I had an advantage because I could plan better through rounds. On the flip, it won't take long for them to become savvy enough with it to not just go down and click ok on the name the program tells you to take and then it will be interesting.

The last few years people in my league have been slowly discovering FBGs. Doesn't really bother me, in fact, I use it to my advantage knowing who they will aiming for in drafts, waiver wire, etc. Just because you have the info/stats in front of you, doesn't you can make the correct decision based off of that info.

Especially for the cheaper members of the group who don't pay for the subscription, and just use the message boards, there are so many varying opinions on players it doesn't really help them other than being a bit more informed on depth charts and injuries. Which, in this day and age, you can get all of that information by simply using Google.

Really what it comes down to is this: it doesn't matter how much you know, but how you put it to use.

I've been in the same boat before. I wouldn't let it bother you one bit. You know, I truly believe that FF is way more enjoyable with tougher competition. My favorite (and most competitive) leagues by far are the ones with FBG members. I wouldn't take this as a disappointment. Use it as extra incentive/motivation to do what you can to stay ahead of the game. When the championships come, it just feels better.

:excited:

Level playing field. I like playing with knowledgable owners. It makes for better competition and a feeling of really winning when you do.

i always search the $35000 subscriber for names of people in my main league. Up until last year, there was only one other guy that i ever saw in there. Last year when i checked, there were 4. I'm afraid to look this year when the full list is out.

I think I read that they are blocking real names this year.

I thought I read were FBG was not putting up people's real names this year. I used to search the contest as well.

People actually used DD and drafted EXACTLY the way it said to? :blackdot:

Looks like it.I personally use it to help me remember those sleepers or who hasn't been picked. CBS Sportsline doesn't always list the players in a logical order.

I'm the commish for one league with some guys that aren't as knowledgable and not as competitive. I actually gave them the link to this site to help them out. I don't think a single guy ended up here. Their loss.

Picturing a bunch of guys sitting around, one with fresh new FBG gear, and hearing a bunch of annoying timers.

What's that quote about leading a horse to water?

Three years ago I was the only one at my draft with a laptop - and everyone mocked me. Now 1/2 the guys use laptops, but only one uses the DD. I realized it when the tell-tale 10 second warning beep started going off. I just joined a new 12 team league, and 3 of us had laptops. The dude sitting next to me had about 9 stacks of paper going and took a full five minutes to make some of his picks (no time limit - that was a bad idea). When he took Reggie Brown at 9.01 I about fell out of my chair.

I have a different take on this issue. After the first year I used the DD I went back to my league and told everyone about it. I got quite a few of them to use it. The level of competition went way up, and now I have to fight and scrap all year to stay on top...JUST THE WAY I LIKE IT!

I like the competition...because when I win it all it makes the victory so much sweeter. Easy trophies are just not as satisfying to me.

One question: did you get to see her DDs?

With pure luck being a HUGE part of who wins in the fantasy playoffs, the last thing I want is for my competitors to get their hands on this site. So yell it from the mountaintops, "FBG sucks and will make you a (worse) loser."

On our league newsletter (yeah, we really have a league newsletter that goes out twice a year) in my longest running league we list footballguys, fanball, fftoday and kffl so guys have choices and we feel like this leveled the competition which is what we were looking for. It's a 14 teamer and if guys aren't a bit educated they can really fall out of it early. Really the difference has been amazing and for me personally, I do most of my own projections and import them into DD. I keep the latest VBD spreadsheet next to me so I can keep an idea of where the value is at. Works out well, but the league is competitive every single year. Lots of parity and we're pretty proud of what we have in this league. We're all friends and the money is minimal.

In my other leagues, they are more cutthroat and over the last few years I've had similar experiences to what others are saying. I've seen those leagues slowly migrate to FGBs and as stated above, I use it to my advantage. In those leagues I generally make money every year and while I'll never claim to be any kind of FF guru, my projections help me gain great value (based on what I have in front of me) which has really paid off.

For information and relative accuracy, you still can't beat what FBGs has to offer. But I find these forums as useful as anything on the main site. It's still a one stop shop for all your FF needs. IMO, while I do my own projections, this is still a GREAT value as well.

When it was Cheatsheets.com I used the VBD sheets for a year or two. Then when it became a paysite I went away till last year. No one in my league was using it last year, but I won the league so I am scared some will come use it. This year I will be using the DD so next year more teams might buy in. My only saving grace is a lot of the guys dont feel they have to pay for info since we have been playing for 18 years and lot of them think they know enough.

What does the DD pick warning sound like? We had several guys drafing via conference call and I often heard a bell sound coming from the phone - was wondering whether someone was running DD.

In prior years, I think our league has generally tracked ADP and we've always had a couple magazine guys. This year was the first time I got the feeling that many if not most are tracking very closely to the FBG consensus rankings.

Guy in my league showed up wearing a "I won with Joe's cheatsheats.com shirt"

I thought it was hilarious.

In fact, I wanted one

If they are following DD exactly, you should be happy. Sure, they will probably end up with a decent team, but you can use that knowledge against them. Many may even use it as a crutch and an excuse to skimp on their research. Again, much to your advantage. Peek over guys shoulders and check the notes columns on their screens. If they are all blank, you should be happy. Watch out for the guy who's got the notes column filled in...he's using DD as his research tool. There are also a ton of little features buried in DD that they may not be using. GameByGame is my favorite. You can adjust the weights on particular weeks and adjust things by strength of schedule. I personally like to put a bit more weight on division games and, of course, the playoffs. And don't forget about DD's Mock draft feature. Knowing the owners that follow DD exactly will help you in your prep...just mark them as "expert".I've been using VBD for many years, ever since I found the spreadsheet on cheatsheets.com. That thing was great...I'd tweak it a bit and get it to fit on a single sheet of paper and bring just that to drafts...and do very well. Each year it has gotten better and so has the DD. Now I always use DD because it provides so much info...ADP, decent projections, mock drafts, and a place for your own notes. It's a fantastic tool that has absolutely helped me be a better fantasy football player. But, if you just use it blindly, you are missing out and will make mistakes.edit: God, I sound like a freakin' infomercial for DD...
