My son's obsession with YouTube (1 Viewer)

Kids watch other kids open toys?
It's honestly not that much different than reality TV shows that adults watch.  I have the same reaction to my wife watching something stupid like the Kardashians or some other #### - "why are you watching other people like their lives?"  She then reminds me that I sit my fat ### in the recliner and watch grown men play sports all the time.

Yeah, I guess. I don't watch reality shows either, neither does my wife, unless they are a competition. Like Survivor or Amazing Race. Like with sports, at least there's a competitive aspect to it. Just watching someone open up toys seems bizarre.

My 7 yo daughter is obsessed with Bratayley (and the off-shoot gymnastic channels) and still Shaytards.

My 11 yo son will watch a ton of Minecraft videos, most of the time, while playing and copying, then improving on what he watched.

My son was really interested in making his own YouTube videos because he had heard about how much money was made. I discussed how they have to put out consistant, original content and how it was really a job. Then bought him a book about the whole process. He has decided just watching right now is the best for him.

We (the FFA) used to be cool.  We used to have Friday threads.   Now?  We have ####in' Monday threads.

Why do these people have to swear like sailors?  you are an adult playing minecraft or other games on youtube, there is no reason to drop the F bomb every other word.

I have to listen to these videos just to try to censor them.

My 3 year old is obsessed with Ryan'sToyReview. My wife used to let him watch educational stuff on YouTube that helped him learn to count/read etc, but now that he knows how to switch videos and search for stuff he's insane.  We only allow him to watch 30 minutes a day, but I'm thinking of lowering even that.

He watches pretty much everything the op listed, the surprise eggs openings, play dough characters.  He went through a big Thomas the Train phase where he would watch people read off their Thomas collections.

Link to said book? Tia. Fighting the same battle with my son (12 yo). Minecraft videos are the gateway drug.

Son is obsessed with some guy called Diamond Minecart that plays Minecraft for hours on end.  Drives me ####ing crazy. Is one of the sole reasons we put limit on his screen time.

My 8 year old couldn't care less about TV or Netflix.  He just wants to watch other people play video games on YouTube.  We bought him a video capture card so now he posts his own gameplay.

The latest avenue he's taken is playing NFL Mobile on his phone.  The gimmick there is that you have to earn enough points to get player packs (think of it as virtual trading cards).  He'll sit and watch YouTube to see someone open the player packs they got.  On one hand it's annoying because who the eff cares what stupid player packs some kid in England just landed.  On the other, it's cool when your kid ask you who your favorite defensive tackle is because now he can name everyone in the NFL.

Our kids are going to be so much smarter than us.  We just need to keep them from being so much lazier.

i'm now being badgered into hitting the My Little Pony convention in Chicago

... picture all that's been complained about in this thread, then flesh it out in 3-D

  :wall:

It's video games for girls.  Enjoy them occupying themselves.
see, i can get this, to a certain extent

but my daughter has plenty to occupy her time, what with school/girl scouts/dance/violin/choir/theater ... it's like when she was inhaling those Shopkins/MLP vids it was pure brain fry ... like adolescent crack.  nothing constructive coming of it.

certainly don't mind her turning the world off for a bit ... but, ferchrissakes, not for some ridiculous broccoli figurine's unwrapping to be fawned over.

Not saying handing them the phone to peruse Youtube is akin to scouts.  Just saying sometimes you need a break for 30 minutes.  Here's the phone.  Have fun.

Yep, my 11 year old daughter watches this adult female Minecraft player who does all these weird role playing episodes with the Minecraft Comes Alive Mod and she has all these different voices.

This girl has a ton of followers. It is crazy

Oh, yes.  Dan from The Diamond Minecart.  I'm sure he watches Stampy Longnose and iBallisticSquid too.  I haven't quite figured out why all these Youtubers are from the UK.

Book on making the videos.

Nothing special on the book, just a "For Dummies" book. But then we went online to some forums and discussions. Showed this Kindle book. And he realized it was more work than he was ready to put in. The biggest idea I got across to him was it needed to be original, and every idea he had at the time was something he was already watching. We still tinker with the idea and I support him shooting stuff with his phone, but nothing "channel worthy" in his opinion has popped up.

All 3 of my kids would spend 18 straight hours watching things like this, if I let them. What's happened to kids?

When I was a kid, it was the absolute WORST having to wait your turn to play NES Tecmo or PS1 Madden while watching your two friends play their game.

My kids watch Mario kart videos and the lego Jurassic park movies. I thought they were the only ones.

Guess its an epidemic

Is there a youtube channel of kids playing outside?

Like, it starts with some kid "unboxing" some old boy scouts outdoor games rulebooks, like, "How To Play Tag", and then he calls five or six of his friends over, and they go play tag, and then post it and then other kids watch it on Youtube?

That would be awesome.
Dibs on this for my kids channel. Every video we will introduce a new unknown activity like

Tag, Baseball, Lacrosse, Soccer, Swimming.

The kids will unwrap the weekly magical chest and it will have all the equipment needed for that days activity. We will start this today

Kids opening play doh Easter eggs, adults opening pokemon packs, evantubehd, haileys play house, kids streaming mario maker levels, kids playing lego dimensions, kids opening and building lego sets, adults in superhero costumes turning into zombies. Now he wants to make videos opening his own toys and pokemon packs and he gets upset nobody likes his videos. Wtf?
My kids do the same thing... my daughter loves the play doh easter eggs.

As an aside if the youtube income estimator websites are correct these people are making thousands for these videos.

This thread has been horrifying.  Shopkins are even worse than Beanie Babies.

And the Braywhatever the crap is some sort of spawn of Hades.

I feel for your parents.

Is going outside down?
Kids aren't allowed outside anymore. Unless it's scheduled and within the confines of their own yard, with protective netting and nanny-cams.
