My Stock Value Strategy Starts Now (5 Viewers)

I have a question for David or someone else who may know.... how do you get the funds settled in a timely fashion to continue to make trades? When I dealt with Scottrade I'd get notices when I bought with unsettled funds that I needed to hold that newly purchased stock until the funds from the previous sale settled to be in compliance with some law or regulation that I can't remember. Am I remembering that incorrectly or do different brokerages handle that differently?

I've always had that problem too but I'm assuming that they (David and the others) had enough cash already in the account to cover the newer trades.

Has not come up yet with my account. Between savings, checking and brokerage I have $235K with this bank. I also have a margin account (yet rarely buy on margin).

Big lesson learned here is set stops when betting against oil. News can affect the price instantly upward. Not sure I managed my way out of this very well either as their were great buying opportunities to buy SCO at below $29 that should have translated to easy money once it was oversold. But having lost a fortune on this aggressive oil short, I was way too gun shy coming back in to lessen these losses.

I am still a huge skeptic to these run up of oil prices. Oil is now trading at $47/barrel for March delivery. We are about out of storage and despite running at 83% efficiency (a low number),our stockpiles continue to increase. Another 80 million barrels of crude are being stored on supertankers waiting for higher prices. Since most of these purchases came at between $33 and $37/barrel, I would suspect most would be willing to drop off at anything close to $47/barrel since their storage costs are about $1.25/barrel per month on these supertankers.

Despite losing a small fortune here today, I will be watching this closely. I likely will be in SCO on Monday morning (I just do not want to hold over the weekend in case the Pakistan air raids continue and tensions increase).

I would be very careful betting against oil right now. Sounds like you'll be managing your risk appropriately though. Good luck.

Dodds is gonna be upset he missed the opportunity on SCO today. I wanted to buy it when it was low 27's so bad, but too chicken. Sure enough, it rallied back.

Closed my modest position in TBT for a quick buck.

Got long oil late in the day today (USO). There seems to be some support at the $28.50 level.

Pretty much abandoned all strategy here and just looked to move out of stocks gaining 5+ % today. I also cost averaged down on a few others to hopefully put me in a position to get out of this trainwreck. I have already readied myself for taking about a $4K loss here, although after today's moves maybe I can do a lot better than that. The NASDAQ was up just 0.5% yet a lot of these stocks fluctuated quite a bit and I was able to buy and sell positions to at least get into these losers at a better price.

I am now officially out of these stocks:

1. KAZ (avg cost = 1.39, sold for 1.37, QTY = 2,000) for a loss of $40

2. WRES (avg cost = 2.585, sold for 2.545, QTY = 2,000) for a loss of $80

3. CPE (avg cost = 2.66, sold for 2.64, QTY = 2,000) for a loss of $40

4. SBLK (avg cost = 3.20, sold for 2.98, QTY = 1,000) for a loss of $320

5. XING (avg cost = 1.88, sold for 1.98, QTY = 1,000) for a gain of $100

6. ABR (avg cost = 2.96, sold 2.84, QTY = 1,000) for a loss of $120

I made money on this stock in day one then rebought more shares when it nosedived today:

7. VCI (avg cost = 1.60, sold 1.76, QTY 500) for a gain of $80

Summary of Realized gains/Losses To Date = -$420

I now hold the following positions:

8. 1,000 shares of ACFN @ 2.20 (Current value = 2.20, but real low volume has made this hard to sell)

9. 1,000 shares of ACTS @ 1.70 (Current value = 1.57)

10. 900 shares of AEA @ 1.95 (Current value = 1.84)

15. 4,840 shares of FREE @ 1.57 (current value = 1.53)

16. 2,000 shares of GKK @ 1.45 (current value = 1.29)

21. 4,000 shares of ZQK @ 1.73 (current value = 1.63)

22. 4,000 shares of RUTH @ 1.48 (current value = 1.30)

23. 1,000 shares of SIMO @ 2.66 (current value = 2.57)

24. 1,000 shares of SOAP @ 2.98 (current value = 2.81)

25. 1,000 shares of TXCO @ 2.29 (current value = 2.06)

wow you stuck with the strategy for 3 days? Seems a lil premature for all the work you put in.

Anyone keeping track of Dodd's original picks to see how he's doing now?

Oh, and I serious, non stock related note, my partner and I already decided that we will create a live scoring program for the suscriber contest for free. I've gotten so much out of this site over the years, just want to give a little bit back, and it would cost us nothing but some time/effort since we already pay for a live stat feed anyways.

Back home now. Made a little money (about $1,000) buying and selling OIL and DXO at the conference and then scored $2.15 a share on FAZ between yesterday and this morning on 200 shares (+430). Oil related stuff is getting pounded and I awill likely be buying

I likely owe an update here as well as I have dumped almost all of these stocks (I think I hold three positions is all)

I still have a port on google with his initial picks, but none of his follow up trades:cost basis: $60,580.00

market value: $49,390.00

($11,190.00) -18.47%

I know I lost a lot less than this just by getting out of most of these, but almost all were losers. It did not help that I bought in on a day where the market went down 3-4 straight days after. I basically sold any of these stocks if they jumped up 5% in a day (even though it usually meant bad losses). The +7K YTD number accounted for dumping these losers too though

I'm wondering why you were even in any of that lotto trash with the existance of ProShares and Direxion among other ETFs. FAS itself is ridiculous. You don't have to worry about some event cratering the stock like some low IQ CEO and CFO fudging the numbers and then being caught.

Hard lessen learned...Pretty much was an idiot on the stocks. The few days prior to buying those shares I had done well on a similar screen at a little bit more expensive stocks (but the market went up 4-5 days so almost all stocks were up). I convinced myself I had the right screen and I had planned on selling the winners and average costing the losers. But when all dive and continue to dive, that is a horrible mess. Stupid idea that was punished (rightly so). I plan on hanging around the financial/oil/tech sectors through 2009 instead.

Especially seeing if I waited a few days I would have been +$24K or so. I knew the inventory and other news would force oil lower. The ugly thing though was the lobbing of missiles into Pakistan which was driving oil higher. Holding over the weekend seemed like a terrible idea at the time and I stupidly took a bath with this (even though all my initial instincts to buy it were right on). Definitely a huge couple day swing in prices there.

damn my timing today is all off. I had a buy order in on 10,000 DXO at 2.61. It hit 2.61, but I did not get it (broker seems lame today). 5 minutes later DXO sits at 2.68.....aaargh.

Dumped DRYS at 9.27 for a loss of $140 (saw a rally coming for this thing, but the news is so awful the sector can't even save it).

Sold EXM at 7.17 for a gain of $190
