Naomi Wolf, Petard, Hoisted -- If At First You Don't Understand, Just Assume (1 Viewer)

call me pedantic, but how does the author of that article - and presumably the editor - neglect to italicize the title of the book? some new style guide being used?
Pedant.

Nah, good point. I guess it could be British, actually. They also use the commas after the "...",

Keep up the good work progressives! This is the fruit born of feckless, irrational liberal thinking. When you occupy a world where all of your ideas are assumed to be truth and there is no vetting process because the echo chamber is blind to fact, this is what happens. Academia is now strewn with non-thinking, fallacious presumptions, based upon feelings and purported affronts. When perpetually allowed to go unchallenged, this is what happens.

She is a left-wing Alex Jones- detached from reality. The difference is she gets a platform and he does not. The reality is any sane entity should take the megaphone from both of them.

That’s pretty much the majority of people committed to the right and left at this point.

Also doing just the most scant review of who this is person is, it seems like she’s been criticized for butchering history for several years now and this isn’t a first offense.

I disagree, particularly in the world of academia. Conservative speakers are routinely not allowed to speak, falsely censored under the guise of "hate speech" which has become a functionally useless term, serving to really mean "he/she hurts my feelings so they shouldn't be allowed to speak.

There are examples where far left speakers in academia have been de-platformed, but this is a phenomenon that occurs much more frequently with right leaning speakers.

And yet, she has a megaphone to shout from the rooftops and a book deal, too.

If she were right-leaning, you know she would never have this same chance.

Academia certainly is left leaning though there have been exceptions who have thrived like Jordan Peterson. I was more referring to the voices and especially the viewers/listeners.

I don’t know about that. There’s a long list of very successful right authors and media personalities who have been criticized for butchering the facts before. There’s also plenty of conservative slanted media outlets for them to continue to sell their ideas.

To your second point- I agree. There are certainly right leaning disinformation peddlers who go unchallenged by right leaning sources. I cannot dispute that.

Operationally, however, this phenomenon is far more prevalent with left leaning snake oil salespeople and their left wing scribes who allow the Michael Avenatti types hundreds of free hours of TV time.

That’s nothing compared to the Radio/TV time Rush Limbaugh or Donald Trump have gotten. I really do not think it’s imbalanced. However that’s just my general opinion based on what I see, follow on Twitter, etc.

Fair enough.

Donald Trump is president though. Regardless of how anyone feels, he should get air time.

There was lots of things I didn't agree on with Obama but, as President, everything he said and did was newsworthy.

Talk radio is where there is certainly more right wing, unchallenged discourse.

Twitter, YouTube, and Facebook have become largely co-opted by the political left, though.

Here’s what I think I know about conspiracy people: they’re rarely if ever moderate or centrist. It’s always hard right or hard left. Looking at the major conspiracies of my lifetime, and who “the believers” were:

1. JFK murdered by shadowy forces in US Government- hard left

2. George H W Bush had Iranian hostages release delayed so that Reagan could win election- hard left

3. Vince Foster murdered- hard right

4. 9/11 was staged- hard left

5. Obama faked American birth- hard right

I’ll leave the current ones out. The point is, it’s a pretty even distribution, but only among the extremes on both sides. The key unifying elements are a rejection of the notion  that chaos is an element in human affairs, and a belief in the absolute villainy of one’s political opponents.

I honestly wasn't aware of her recent conspiracy stuff. I remember her from the nineties and The Beauty Myth and her Al Gore "alpha dog" thing. That's the last I remember of her, though I remember she was a significant voice in the feminist movement.

Twitter, YT and FB are left? There’s a #### ton of far right stuff on there.

As for Trump, he got lots of media time before he was President. Starting with primary season there wasn’t another candidate who was getting anywhere close to the free airtime Trump was and imo that helped legitimize him as a candidate.

I never heard of her either.
The you really haven't followed fashionably intellectual politics as in-depth as some of us. That's quite simple, isn't it?

She was a major behind-the-scenes gender gap (not wages, but electoral) figure who helped Bill Clinton and Al Gore with courting the woman vote.
