Navdy -- Car 'Heads Up' Display (1 Viewer)

I dunno. Anything that takes your eyes off the road is a disaster waiting to happen. Projecting it onto the base of your windshield is still going to take your attention/eyes off of the road.

It's less of a "look away" than the current touchscreens that most newer cars have. It's probably the same level of distraction but at least it's not looking all the way away from the road. Also, I'm guessing that since it uses your car's OBD2 that a lot of devices like Automatic and Delphi are probably pretty nervous about this thing, as they should be.

A lot of new premium car makers (as well as Mazda  ) are including this type of front-windshield display in their new cars.

Yeah, that's true (the part about car manufacturers moving this way). I'm not completely against it by any means, I just don't see how it is THAT much safer than the phone. Anything that takes your eyes off the road is dangerous. Your line of sight when you're driving is not right over the dashboard, it's through the middle of the windshield, looking ahead of you. The display on this seems to draw your eyes down.

Looks pretty sweet. I'd have to try one of these out to see how well it really works. That voice to text worked a little too well. I hardly get phone calls or texts and I never tweet, but if I did, I'd give this some serious thought.

But pilots use it!

Seriously though, I believe a HUD is already included in modern corvettes (and likely other cars) and has been for a few years so this isn't new technology. It's just the portable/affordable part that's new. I haven't heard about it causing any issues on Vettes or luxury cars that use it.

And I agree with Ahrn that it's less of a lookaway than stuff that people already look away for, including GPS/phones and even the radio.

Does it do turn by turn and other phone integration? I see videos where it does just things like mph and fuel, but that's pretty useless.

Okay, fair enough. I'm not that passionate about it, but its just not something that I can get behind 100%. I agree with the fact that it is less distrscting than other devices, though.

Well after a several delays I finally got this thing delivered this week.

It's pretty cool.     I'm still getting used to it but having all of your map and speed and upcoming turns all in your field of vision is nice.

The downside:  If you didn't get in on the Kickstarter campaign, these things retail now for $799.  That's way too steep for this (or truthfully, most) gadgets.    But at $299 with a wait that felt like forever, I'm reasonably happy.   The hand gestures for taking/rejecting calls work well.

Above questions:  Yes, it does turn-by turn nav with traffic-based routing (uses google maps as it's nav framework).  Also does your speed and the limit of the road you're on, compass, clock, RPM and some other stuff I likely havent found yet.
