Steve Prohm leaving Murray State to take the Iowa State job.

IMO this a great hire for Iowa State. Prohm is a great recruiter and a great coach who puts an entertaining product on the floor.

huh, did not know the N. Kentucky moved.

Any other schools changing conferences?
Dunno - though I know the AAC roll out has been going over a couple years so probably a new team or two starting there.

NJIT benefits from N Kentucky being total back-stabbing dbags basically. N Ky only started playing Division I in like 2011 and nobody wanted them - the Atantic Sun took them in. N Ky forced the league to make them elgible for NCAA bid a year early (didn't have to) last year (fortunately they didn't win the bid). Then when the Horizon came calling N Ky dropped Atantic Sun right away (other schools had given a year wait).

The Atlantic Sun (previously TAAC) is a weird conference. Playing since '78. Stetson currently is the longest tenured team, joining in '85. All of the other teams have joined since '98 and later.

Hoping NJIT can build up a good rivalry like the Civil Conflict.

Thon Maker will remain in class of 2016. Not sure what he'll gain by being a 19 year old high school athlete. Will hurt more than help. Bizarre he indicated reason he's staying in high school is to improve his game

Really seems like his handlers are hiding him. They held him out of a FIBA tournament a couple of years ago (He was going to play for Australia) and then they ship him and his brother up to Canada last year even though there are plenty of "schools" (read: basketball factories) that he could have played for here in the States. The shine was starting to come off the diamond a bit a year or so ago (once everyone realized that he refused to go inside and wasn't Durant from the perimeter) and it seems like they didn't like that too much.

He evidently performed really well at the NBA top 100 Camp a couple of weeks ago. But if they're truly confident that he's the prospect he's touted as, he should be playing somewhere other than high school next year. He's staying there because its where he can dominate. 99% chance he enters the 2016 draft. He'll be eligible from an age perspective (He turns 19 in February) and he's already completed all his Core HS classes.

"Team USA" just landed in Korea for the World University Games. It's in quotes because the roster is the USA-eligible KU players, with a few other players from programs run by Self'a buddies to fill out the team.

The games will be on ESPNU. The uniforms they will wear are USA colors inspired by the 1952 Olympic team, which had seven players from KU.

Agreed it does seem they're trying to hide him. Eventually he's gonna have to sink or swim.

I thought he was a multi-year college player all along (way too raw), but I'm fairly certain he won't be eligible for 2016 draft (regardless of his decision to play high school vs. college in 2015-16) . He must be 1 year removed from his high school graduation (which he won't be) AND 19 years old (end of calendar year of draft...the 1 part of the criteria he does meet). Earliest he'll be able to enter is 2017.

He must have not been on track to graduate high school early enough to play college ball this season. Just a bizarre decision all around. He gains absolutely nothing staying in high school (monetarily or competition wise) I can see him being one to play in China his year before NBA draft. (Wide open game with no defense) And he'll not have the need to develop (like playing high school ball at 19)

The impression I got somewhere was that he wouldn't have graduated this year until after the NBA draft, meaning he wouldn't be a year removed at the time of the 2016 draft. There was some talk of him staying in 2015 but not enrolling in college until the 2nd semester, then playing 1.5 years of college ball.

I read an article saying he's already done with his Core high school classes. But I guess if he technically didn't "graduate" before the draft, he's not eligible for next year's draft.

These handlers of his are really doing him a tremendous disservice. Even worse for his younger brother, who isn't as highly regarded and will absolutely need several years in college to have any chance of a pro career.

So about all those recruiting misses for Kentucky this spring. Scratch that. John Calipari and the Wildcats finished off the 2015 class strong – and with a fairly big surprise – when five-star Canadian guard Jamal Murray committed on Wednesday evening.

With all the buzz and most recruiting analysts' predictions favoring Oregon, Murray picked UK during a live announcement on Canadian network TSN. The 6-foot-4, 195-pound guard recently reclassified from 2016 and is rated the 12th-best prospect in 2015 by Scout.com.

His pledge gives the Cats three five-star prospects in the class, along with guard Isaiah Briscoe and center Skal Labissiere. Kentucky's class moves up to No. 2 nationally in Scout's rankings and No. 1 in 247Sports' ranking.

"You're looking at a backcourt that could arguably be the best in the country when you mix him with Tyler Ulis and Isaiah Briscoe," Scout's national recruiting analyst Evan Daniels said. "I think his versatility and how different of a guy he is than those two (will) be big for Kentucky. They need a knockdown guy on the perimeter. They also (will) be getting a guy to play a point guard role when they need him to and let him play off the ball and score when they need him to."

Murray's commitment erases all the angst of an unusual string of spring recruiting misses. Six consecutive five-star targets picked other programs before Murray chose the Cats: Stephen Zimmerman (UNLV), Malik Newman (Mississippi State), Brandon Ingram (Duke), Cheick Diallo (Kansas), Jaylen Brown (California) and Caleb Swanigan (Purdue).

But now, despite those decisions and seven underclassmen declaring for the NBA Draft, Kentucky will be in the mix for a preseason No. 1 ranking. The Cats will have six former five-star recruits on the roster for 2015-16. Murray could slide right into the starting lineup on the wing – which would allow senior Alex Poythress to return to his natural power forward spot.

"Jamal really impressed me at Nike Hoop Summit when he was going against some of the premier players, including Isaiah Briscoe," Daniels said. "In that setting, I thought Jamal was tremendous. He obviously put up huge numbers in the game, but I wasn't at the game; I was at practice all week and the practices were competitive and he played awesome.

"He was dishing; I'd never seen him pass it like that before. I thought he did a great job facilitating. And when you have that kind of ability and you're a knockdown shooter, it really opens up your game."

On Wednesday, Murray also opened a new world of possibilities for next year's Cats.

Kentucky has an intriguing team, but it might take a bit for them to find their game. They are not deep in the front court, and I am still not convinced Skal is going to be eligible, but have not seen any fresh worries.

Skal

Lee

Poythress

Briscoe

Ulis

Murray

Mulder - JUCO transfer, 3-pt guy

Mathews

Hawkins

Willis - only "big" on the bench

I can see them going with Briscoe/Murray/Ulis a lot with 2 of Poythress/Lee/Skal

Yeah, the prevailing opinion seems to be a 3-guard lineup, with Lee as the 6th man, but there should be plenty of minutes.

Haven't heard a thing on Skal's eligibility in a long time. No news is good news.

I like Murray a lot, certainly more than Briscoe (although he's pretty darn good too). I'm not sure he puts UK over the top, but I certainly think he makes them a top 10 team. Not sure they were without him (despite what appears to be a watered down field of contenders next season)

At the end of the day, I really don't think you can play all 3 at the same time. They're all pretty ball dominant.(not saying Ullis is selfish. Just saying he should have the ball in the hands) I think their best lineup is Ullis, Murray, Poythress, Lee and Skal (assuming eligibility). Not sure Briscoe is gonna be psyched coming off the bench, but I just don't like the 3 of them as a unit. The front court depth is still a problem, even with Skal. If he's declared ineligible, you're looking at like 20 minutes per game of Willis (at least until the New Zealand kid shows up for the 2nd semester). Doesn't seem ideal.

Sorry for the river in Egypt posts, but yeah, Kentucky had a lot of recruiting misses. That doesn't look like a real terrific team.
:lmao: 3 top-13 players, is a down year
Ulis running a college offense with any talent around him at all is a threat to win every night.

Poythress might have to play some PF? Oh, no. the horror of putting a player comfortable around the basket and fighting for rebounds at PF.

I'll be shocked if a healthy UK is any worse than a 2-seed. They should win the SEC and will have a strong SOS with OOC road games at Ohio State, UCLA, and Kansas, a neutral site game against Duke, and hosting Louisville.

Duke gets Jayson Tatum 2nd ranked guy according to ESPN. Potential for another monster class and a package deal. Who said anything bad about one and dones?

UK is #actually the odds-on favorite to win it this year, although it's a really wide-open race. Frosty would know better than I but I can't remember the last time the shortest odds for any given team were +900:

After re-reading this in the mornings, I'm not 100% sure what you mean...from internet researching I see that:

Of course, Bovada has Duke/UK at 13/2 so Sportsbook's odds seem a tad too high right now.

You're misunderstanding what he is saying. He said he couldn't remember the last time the shortest odds on the NCAAMB Futures board were as high as +900, indicating a wide-open race. Your list of clear favorites from previous seasons is supporting his point.

Team USA won the men's basketball gold in World University Games in Korea today. Fun double OT final against Germany. First USA gold in WUG men's hoops in 10 years. USA went undefeated in the games.

The USA was coached by Bill Self and the KU staff. The players were mainly the Americans on the Kansas roster, plus SMU guard Nic Moore.

This summer success raises expectations for the Jayhawks this winter. The incoming freshmen were allowed to participate, so the whole WUG experience was extra organized practice and games for the team. Roster seems to be nice mix of talent and experience, though one of the freshman bigs (Diallo or Bragg) will have to be awesome right away from the team to be a true national title threat.

Given what we saw at the WUG and hints Self has dropped during interviews this summer, I expect Frank Selden (overall USA's best player at WUG) to play a lot more SF this season. Seems Self wants to play Frank Mason and Davonte Graham together a lot more this winter to play at a faster pace and apply more defensive pressure. Bring Svi and Greene off the bench for more perimeter size and shooting. Anything LaGerald Vick contributes is gravy.

For the bigs, Perry Ellis will return for his 15th season playing PF for the Jayhawks, the last Roy Williams recruit still with the program. In November the C will be either project Landen Lucas or Arkansas transfer Hunter Mickelson, a great shot-blocker who didn't play much last season but showed some flashes of great play at the WUG. That said, if Cheick Diallo isn't starting by January, something has gone wrong.

The team's success at the WUG has also put Self on the short list to replace Mike Krzyzewski as the USAB senior national team coach when Coach K steps down. Given what a successful recruiting pipeline Team USA has been for Coach K and Sean Miller, I hope he gets the job.

ETA: and rolls up to the first practice like this.

Damn, damn, damn.

Arkansas has 3 players arrested today. Including 2 starters. Anton Beard would have been a sophomore next year and likely the best player. He would have been first or second team all-SEC by the time he was a senior. There's also news that their top recruit isn't going to be eligible.

Black Wednesday probably doesn't mean a lot on it's face outside of the fanbase. It does mean that Malik Monk, a top-5 recruit for next year, is basically a Kentucky lock at this point.

All the bad things in life happen to me and Kentucky benefits. Makes sense.

These summer experiences are fantastic for a team. It's almost an unfair advantage. I don't think there's anyway UK has the season it did last year without the summer experiment they had. KU will be way ahead of the game when the regular season rolls around...

Kansas at Chaminade

UCLA v UNLV

Lot of big brand names in the field this year.

It's been a few years since it's had a decent field...looks like it should be a fun one.

Still expect Kansas to walk but least there's some other meat on the bone.

KU is a big favorite on paper, and getting to keep the team together for the WUG this summer should be an advantage. Was ambivalent about drawing Chaminade, but IIRC they aren't an RPI hit because games against D-II teams aren't included in the calculation.

There will be a lot of Crimson and Blue in the Lahaina Civic Center that weekend. Skipping this one, but down the road I would like to see one of these island tournaments in person like the Maui Invitational or the Battle 4 Atlantis.

Bol Bol, son of the late Manute Bol, is already a major college prospect

Bol Bol is 15 and just finished 9th grade. He's already 6'10"-6'11" with the wingspan of a superhero, but can dribble and has some range on his shot.

He lives in the KC suburbs. After getting kicked out of a public school for enrolling in it improperly (tried to go out-of-district to play for a specific high school coach, didn't file all the proper open enrollment paperwork to do so), he finished his freshman season at the same Catholic high school the Releford brothers went to.

Kid has major talent but is developing a rep as being a handful to deal with personally, and doesn't seem to be a serious student. Because of his name and talent, I expect him to make the jump to one of the prep factories before too long, if he hasn't already transferred to one.
