West Virginia dismantled Baylor.  They foul on every possession, but the refs won't blow the whistle 40 times.  No way Kansas wins in Morgantown.

Tough 8 days coming up at the end of the month:

Jan 24 - road vs #10 West Virginia

Jan 28 - road vs # 6 Kentucky

Feb 1 - Host #1 Baylor
Only 4-0 team in the Big XII, but haven't played anybody good yet.  Pretty safe to say by Feb 2 there should be a good handle on how deep this team will go in March.

I don't care what a player ever says or does, its utter nonsense for an assistant coach to stand there and talk #### back and forth with an 18 year old. And to do so off the court might be even worse than on the court, for there's no "heat of the moment" excuse.  I can't fathom a head coach (New Mexicos Craig Neal) seeing this video and saying "my assistant didn't do anything wrong, and I stand by that."  Get your ### on the bus and shut your mouth.  Smh.

Agree. This guy has to be suspended at a minimum. Coach needs to back of the automatic support of his guy.

Big win for my Gamecocks tonight. We finally made it back into the top 25 to start off a big week of basketball. A win vs a top 5 RPI team in Florida will go along way when bids are getting handed out in March. With Sindarius Thornwell in the lineup the Gamecocks are 12-0  and 3-3 without him. They are one of the better defensive teams in the nation and can stay in most games even when the offense goes cold.

With all of that being said it gets real Saturday evening in Rupp Arena when the 2 remaining undefeated teams in the conference matchup.

Nice!  Been a while for Gamecocks basketball.  Welcome back.

Saw Frank Martin coach a lot at K-State.  His intensity wore some people out, but wow his teams played hard.

The good part about games at Rupp w/r/t the NCAA Tournament is there's no downside.  If you lose, you still get credit for playing a top team on the road.  If you win, it's handy tiebreaker against teams with similar resumes.

Yeah, Coach Martin inherited a dumpster fire 5 years ago and It's taken this long to build it back up. After being snubbed last year I hope and pray that we get in this season. The 3 losses when Thornwell was suspended could be huge. Only time will tell but the win tonight makes up for some of that. We haven't won a tourney game in 44? years back when we use to be a heavyweight in the ACC.

I'm not sure that I even realized that Tubby Smith went to Memphis.  Just ran out on Texas Tech after building them up.  Battling Texting Kelvin Sampson and Houston tonight.  What a world.

Florida State & Louisville in a war. It's not pretty offensive basketball, but the athleticism and defensive effort is silly good.

Well it turns out that Kentucky's speed and athleticism was too much on this night in Rupp. Thornwell showed up tonight and kept it as close as he could. Too bad he didn't get much help. Would have been closer if PJ Dozier would have played but still probably would have lost. Duane Notice has got to get his stroke back. For the last month his shot is uncharacteristically off.  I loved seeing Sin step up in a big game though. One of the most well rounded players in the country. I hope we get to face them again in the SEC tourney on a neutral floor with a healthy squad.

Tough break for De'Aaron Fox. I hope he is OK.

Making my first-ever trip to Rupp next weekend to see this for myself.  Looking forward to it.

With the win over Texas today, Kansas is now 7-0 in the Big XII and alone in first place.  Conference schedule is backloaded so too early to make any sweeping declarations about the conference title streak, but if they pull off another Big XII title this season that's 13 in a row and ties 60s-70s UCLA for longest streak of this type.

Other historic streak to set come March is consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances.  Barring a cratering or NCAA infractions announcement, KU is on track for 28 straight NCAA bids, breaking UNC's run from 1975-2001.

Last KU team to miss the NCAAs was 1989, Roy Williams's first season.  But that's not on Roy - infractions discovered as Larry Brown was packing his bags included a postseason ban.  If anything, Roy's transformation from postseason ban in 1989 to NCAA championship game in 1991 doesn't get enough credit in the program's history.

Man, your team has a tough week. I believe you go to WVA and then UK. We had a tough one this week and split, which I would gladly take going in.

Good luck.

And WVU is going to be salty after screwing the pooch in Manhattan today.

After Rupp, Baylor comes to Lawrence.  Usually that game is pretty safe at home (IIRC, Scott Drew has lost more games at the Phog than Bill Self), but 18-1 is 18-1.

Hope you enjoy Rupp.  It can get a little quiet from time to time during a "normal" game.  Have a feeling that won't be the case next weekend though!
Really getting excited about it.

As loud as Phog can get, it's not a "self-starting" crowd.  When KU falls 6-8 points behind, the crowd murmurs and gets nervous.  It's different than other arenas with the mentality of "my team is falling behind, I need to cheer louder and help them play better".  Once the Jayhawks stop the bleeding with a  forced turnover or a made shot the crowd will scream and be deafening when the rally is almost complete, but it's the team that gets the crowd going, not the other way around.

Was with one of my upcoming travel companions today, talking about how much history is there.  And not just UK games: the Fab Five won their first NCAA Regional there (a fantastic OT win over Ohio State with Jim Jackson), and of course Villanova's big upset over Georgetown was at Rupp, one of the last arena Final Fours.

I think there were others in between, but the last arena FF was actually 1996 at the Meadowlands. I'm a little disappointed this is the only one I've ever attended, partly because of that but more because all of the FF events were held in Manhattan, which kind of swallowed up all of the atmosphere.

Coach K got out at the right time. The last time NC State beat Duke in Cameron was '95 when K was not coaching. Classic.

The best part was NC State fervently trying to blow the game in the last minute, but Duke not being able to capitalize.

Holy hell, dont think I've ever seen Gonzaga at the top of kenpom's list.  Good for them.  Taking care of business this year.

Rupp is a visit everyone should make. :)

I've been good about hitting MLB stadiums I've wanted to see, but there's still a few bucket list basketball arenas I've yet to go inside in person.  I know I'm biased about Allen and probably still will be after this weekend, but I'll enjoy the experience of seeing two Blue Bloods tip off at Rupp even if UK wins by 20.

Realistic shot at 30-0.  @ St Mary's and @ BYU will be tough but winnable.  Zags will be favored in just about every game down the stretch.

I'll be really surprised if the 1-seeds aren't Nova, Gonzaga, UK, and KU in whatever order.  ACC champ will be hosed because that conference is such a bloodbath this season, but that happens.

If one of Arizona, UCLA, or Oregon win out they will be a 1 seed.  Very top heavy Pac 12 this year and any one of those teams could win it all this year.

Gonzaga beat Arizona this year on a neutral court (well, semi-neutral in LA), who just beat UCLA at UCLA.  I dont think an unbeatten Gonzaga loses a 1 seed to either of them.  I dont know enough about Oregon.  I suppose there could be 2 1 seeds from out west if both Gonzaga and one of the P12 teams wins out.  There'd be a lot of whining if that happened.

Yeah a lot left to play.  It will be interesting when they start releasing the top 16 in a few weeks.

Gonna be a lot of ACC and PAC-12 at the top.  Arizona, UCLA, and Oregon are probably looking at two of the 2s and a 3 (I'm skeptical of one of them running the table, but that would indeed warrant 1-seed discussion).

In the Big XII, I'm a seller on Baylor and a buyer on West Virginia.

Hoping FSU gets matched with Baylor in that 1/2 draw somehow.

Just heard that the committee actually is going to unveil the preliminary projections of the top four seeds (Sweet 16) sometime in February. I guess trying to capture a little bit of the attention like what the football playoff committee did.

It won't be a weekly thing, and honestly probably not anything that most fans that pay attention wouldn't be able to come up with on their own. Not that it will mean much of anything, but I've always liked the mystery of not really knowing anything up until the Selection Show.

Great game played by a great team organized by a great coach.

I hope Esa Ahmad turns pro.  Don't want to go against him again.
The great thing is this:

"West Virginia Mountaineers head coach Bob Huggins gets a $25,000 bonus for beating Kansas.  It's a specific bonus in his contract that goes to his mother's foundation for cancer research."

I'm glad the loss contributed to cancer research.

I've always dug Huggins.  I thought the sanctimonious outrage over his players' graduation rate was a bunch of hippie bull####.  Huggins was the honest one.  Glad he found a spot where he's properly appreciated.

#1 Gonzaga.  Just letting that sink in ❤
Breathe it in.  They've earned it.  Really good neutral-court wins over Arizona, Florida, and Iowa State.  Some sneaky-good OOC wins (at Tennessee is a bigger RPI boost than it seems on paper, Akron is top 50 RPI), and haven't played a close game since... when?  Iowa State?

Point being, it's more than just a mid-major going unscathed.  They have seven quality wins and no one outside RPI100 has given them a game.

Titus had a good write-up on the Zags a few days ago:

I think if Kansas beats Kentucky on Saturday and makes a statement, they will be number one.

Or the voters will just say it was a fluke week, they all lost on the road, we will just keep them ranked the same way.
