If, as the poll ? suggests, Kentucky and Duke really have the worst fans, UConn is basically our saviors. Were it not for the Huskies in 1999 and 2004, Duke and Coach K would be the unquestioned kings of college basketball over the last 25 years with nobody else even in the conversation. And were it not for this year's team, obviously Cal and Kentucky would have two titles in three years.

We should all send them some sort of thank you gift or something.
:lmao:

I will say that beating Duke twice for the title was very sweet, especially with how many times Duke derailed our tourney runs. Any UConn fan that is around 40 will remember Laettner stomping on Sellers head and would say that Duke, outside of the Big East, was easily our most hated opponent.

That said, I was a little surprised at the love between Cal and Ollie given the feuds Calhoun and Cal had when Cal was at UMass. I am sure things softened over the years, but I wonder if Calhoun really savored his protege beating Cal.

:hifive:

And but for UConn, UK might have had 3 titles in 4 years, not 2 in 3. Assuming they would get past Butler in '11.

Cal coached Ollie with the 76ers.

Kevin Ollie and Jim Boeheim are now tied with one National Championship each.
Final Four appearances by coach in the last 10 tournaments (2005-14):

4: John Calipari

3: Billy Donovan, Ben Howland, Tom Izzo, Rick Pitino, Bill Self, Roy Williams

2: Jim Calhoun, Thad Matta, Brad Stevens

1: John Beilein, Jim Boeheim, John Brady, Bob Huggins, Mike Krzyzewski, Jim Larranaga, Gregg Marshall, Kevin Ollie, Bo Ryan, Shaka Smart, John Thompson III, Jay Wright

(*Note: Not trying to cherry-pick here ... Calipari actually has all four in the last seven years.)

Thanks, didn't know that. I was thinking about the Calhoun/Calipari feud with UMass/UConn last night. I was wondering if it was still around or not.

I think, officially, Calipari only has three.

As a UMass alum/fan, I don't have any love lost for UConn, but admittedly a lot of that was my general distaste for the way Calhoun handled things. I certainly respect the job Ollie has done there.

You could say that. I think the more interesting part is how little relative success the likes of Boeheim and Coach K (2010 title aside) have had in the tournament in the last decade overall.

Congrats on making the tourney this year.

Ummm, 1993, 2005, 2009 - That is 12% of the National Championships out there in the last 25 year.

Obviously you don't have to tell me. Duke would almost certainly have six were it not for UConn, though (91,92, 99, 01, 04, 10).

Digger Phelps announced he is retiring from broadcasting.

Think I'm gonna inhale a highlighter in his honor.
wow you just made my day! first time i've smiled since the james young dunk...
On the KU board I frequent, the only feedback on this news that qualified as negative was of the "Why couldn't he take Vitale with him?" theme. This photo is a great tribute to how awesome that dunk was. Yes, Young scores points on the end on that play.

Why yes, I do have a link to a slo-mo GIF of that dunk. Thanks for asking.

eta: I'm surprised they didn't go to the monitor for 20 minutes and come back with an intentional flagrant 6C technical

One team I'm surprised isn't on any of those lists is Xavier. I'm not saying they are a top 10 team or anything, but ESPN has them with the 18th best recruiting class and they still have two out of three of their best guys returning. And in the games I watched of them this year, I really think that Semaj Christon kid was highly overrated. It may be a blessing that he leaves.

I love how it counted for two points.

Fox & Friends First anchor, "The UConn Huskies are the 2014 NAACP national champs!"
I saw that. Good work by her.
Unsure if I'm horrified or impressed that she played right through it.

Didn't help that her news copy didn't match the highlights. When she hit the words "Shabazz Napier" hard because a newscaster should emphasize names, the video playing was DeAndre Daniels driving the baseline and dunking.

I may have to take back some of my criticisms of SportsCenter after seeing this.

I don't know if anyone mentioned it, but Cauley-Stein's shirt-under-jersey shtick was awesome.
You're in luck, you can buy it for $145.

Napier can't afford to eat but Cauley Stein is rocking $145 Ralph Lauren shirts? Hmmm

I haven't heard this before. Cal must be paying him. You ever thought that some people just come from better off families? He grew up living with NFL player Will Shields, he was basically his dad. Maybe, just maybe an ex pro football player has money.

That isn't what I meant.

If that's what you think I meant, how much did the Shields give him? He was like a father, not an actual father, so that would still be a violation of NCAA rules on benefits.

I don't know who gave who money, WCS lived with Shields growing up, maybe he bought him that shirt 3 years ago when he was still in HS. Maybe WCS saved up to buy that shirt with his own money. Maybe UK paid for it. Who really knows what happened.

WCS shirt gate

WCS didn't grow up in the Shields home. He grew up in a 800-person town in western Kansas that is basically two stoplights and a wind farm.

After his freshman year of high school, WCS played AAU ball with Shavon Shields, Will's son. In order to get a better education and the attention of football scouts (yes, football - WCS was a D-I WR/FS prospect until a late growth spurt made him a basketball prospect), he moved in with the Shields family in the KC suburbs.

Shields is a modest guy for a man of his wealth, but if you looked down the halls of the school where WCS and Shavon Fields went to high school, you will see plenty of kids wearing $100 shirts.
